From Arnie
The biggest news for May is that I bought a bike. I used to bike a lot back in grad school in Arizona, but when I moved to Chicago (decades ago) I was always pretty intimidated by biking on busy streets. And then when my bike got stolen I thought, “Well, so be it.” But now the kiddo has finally learned to ride her bike (and I live in a much less high-traffic area) so I bought a new bike for the first time in at least 17 years and I’ve been enjoying some family bike rides on a nearby path.
Other highlights included seeing Muna play at the Salt Shed (the old Morton Salt Factory was recently converted into a surprisingly great music venue), having friends over to watch the Eurovision Song Contest Finals (I made Pimm’s Cups as the cocktail for the occasion but each one took me too long to make), and figuring out if my suit still fits and going as Emily’s guest to my first charity gala (If you’re interested in supporting or just learning about a great organization that provides housing, education and career planning for unhoused Chicago youths, you can get more info here: Ignite - futures with promise™ (ignitepromise.org) ).

Adal and I have both been going but this was the first time we were both able to make it on the same night. During one of the games we were both the evil team and within minutes everyone said, “Arnie and Adal… they’re the evil ones. Let’s vote.”

From Matt:
This is going to be a short one. May has been work and Zelda heavy. I went to central Illinois to see my family and celebrate my grandfather’s 95th birthday! I also had dental surgery!
TV/Movies/Web stuff:
Took my Mom to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (It’s what she wanted for Mother’s Day). It was fun, but not as fun as the first two. Lots of videos about coffee on YouTube.
Games:
Tears of the Kingdom. All the time. Love it.
Collecting:
Finished up some more Gundam models and bought some that got released/re-released. Have a healthy(?) backstock to work through now.
Food:
Not much to report til my teeth get settled. Sorry.
MY
From Adal:
Fun month full of travel and celebrations. We went with my mom, sister and brother-in-law to Door County over Mother’s Day weekend. Splendid place with lots of fish boils and a pretty solid putt-putt place called Pirates Cove (I got 3 hole in 1’s but lets not make a big deal out of it…)
Over Memorial Day weekend I went with Jemma to Princeton Reunions and had more Hoagie Haven, which I’m ready to declare as a top 3 all-time sandwich, and was introduced to a new game called 2 ball (basically involves sprinting around a pool table). After watching one round I jumped in to play and IMMEDIATELY annihilated my knee on the table and have now spent the last week hobbling around. Don’t play 2 ball.
I just got back (apologies for the newsletter delay) from my birthday trip to Lisbon where I crept closer to death by tallying up 41 years. We had a great time with highlights including steak sandwiches for dessert, pastiche de nada’s, out of this world garlic shrimp (and seafood in general), a magical day trip to Sintra and an immersive show about Edgar Allan Poe we ended up going to 3 times called A Morte do Corvo. If you ever want a list of recommendations please reach out and I’m happy to share.
Here’s what I consumed in May:
TV:
- I Think You Should Leave season 3
- Detroiters season 1
- Review season 1 - easily the most underrated tv show of all time. It’s on Paramount + if you’ve never seen it
- Queer Eye season 7
- Tjhe Other Two season 3
- Schmigadoon! season 2
- Rise of the Pink Ladies
- RuPaul AllStars season 8
- The Muppets Mayhem
- The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning
- The Big Door Prize
- Jeopardy
Movies:
- Gone Fishing - a funny, sad and weird short film I really enjoyed. Written, directed and featuring some of our buds from Big Grande and starring the best Big Toe, Mary Holland. Please check it out! https://vimeo.com/761279804
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Fast X in 4DX - went with JPC and Casey Toney and we got our asses absolutely scrambled by the machine that is 4DX.
- Miracle - had never seen it and figured it was time
- Blade Runner - same as above
- Blade Runner 2049
- Air
- Guardians of the Galaxy 3
- Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair
- Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up For the First Time
- American Masters: Mel Brooks: Make a Noise
- Jinkx Monsoon: Red Head Redemption
Other Stuffs:
- Music I’ve been listening to: AJJ’s album ‘Good Luck Everybody’, The Fat Rat album PARALLAX and The National’s new album ‘First Two Pages of Frankenstein’
- The podcast Mallwalkin’ with Mark McConville and Matt Gourley.
- Played some more Blood on the Clocktower, this time with Arnie and as he mentioned we had one brutal game where we were sussed out immediately!
- Got the Peanut Butter Puppy Chow blizzard at Dairy Queen and it’s very much worth checking out.
- Since I was out of town I haven’t been able to see it but I’m unbelievably excited to see Across The Spider-Verse! This might be the most I’ve ever anticipated seeing a film.
- Got to see Caroline Polchik and Ethel Cain in concert which was a treat
- In searching out more immersive theater to experience I stumbled across a theatrical immersive horror piece done over the phone called CLAWS. It’s a dark and engaging roller coaster ride and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a unique experience! https://candlehousecollective.com/tickets/claws
- On June 2nd our Brisket (aka Bongo, aka Bicky, aka Bissy Beans) celebrated his birthday!
- I was recently a guest (along with Erin Keif and JPC) on the delightful podcast Review Revue talking about bidets! Please give it a listen!
Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying!
Love & Large Please
