I decided in the end to simply remove the text from panel 3 because my thinking is that after essentially being disowned by your own mother, you probably wouldn't say much other than to maybe let out a wail of anguish, as Tsenaya does in the final panel.
Actually conveying the emotions of abandonment and despair was surprisingly tricky, and I'm super grateful for all the input and guidance Aktwin Grakata and Razul Wolf gave on the sketches! It really did help me out ^_^.
Also I need to think up a more varied wardrobe for Nailah, but in this particular case I really did like the idea of her continuing to wear her signature white dress.
