They had never been a particularly affectionate couple. So Anne’s distant reaction didn’t feel unusual to him.

In a way, it was a sad reflection of their marriage. But after decades of living together, Alex had grown used to her indifference. He didn’t take it personally and simply smiled, happy to see her again after so long.

“Please come to my room tonight.”

“Yes.”

Alex was confused by Anne’s words. There was something unsettling about what she had said.
