IMPORTANT - Patreon Sales Tax Update
Added 2020-05-21 16:56:27 +0000 UTCYou may or may not have seen that Patreon rolled out an update where they will be charging sales tax to certain patrons based on where they live. I will read over everything soon but my first impression is this should have minimal to no impact for you.
In my opinion, the majority of a pledge's value falls under "general support," which is non-taxable for people in several countries, notably the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. If you're not in those countries but want to know if you'll be taxed, let me know and I'll try to find out.
However, it looks like I'll be required to list out how much percentage of each pledge goes toward certain benefits like Discord participation, early comic page access, and so on. I will do my best to keep the taxable portion as low as reasonably possible. Once that's set, I'll make another post detailing what I have figured out and how I've settled the numbers.
I firmly believe that transparent communication is the key to managing situations like these is the absolute best practice. So I'll be doing my best to be as open with you about this process as possible. I don't fully understand how to navigate this yet but I'll try to figure it out.
