Early preview: Aubrey at the pool

Behind her, two of her younger cousins crept barefoot across the grass. Jalen, the tall, muscle-bound jock, mouthed a count to his younger brother Milo. They grinned in sync. “Now,” Jalen whispered.
They lunged. Or rather… they tried to.
Their hands barely reached Aubrey’s back when something stopped them cold. She didn’t move. Not an inch. It was like pushing a mountain made of silk. Aubrey turned her head, serene and smiling.
“Oh? Trying something, were we?”
