Loved the video and the content. As somewhat of a history buff, I was able to follow along pretty well with what you were saying, but there were a few moments where I felt like too much information was coming down the pipe to be understood and interpreted. A little slower speed on the TelePrompTer perhaps? I'd love to see you break down future concepts with other visuals (like a blackboard/dry-erase board), or do a few episodes more in the Ken Burns documentary style. Keep it up! Can't wait to see what the future of CLS holds and happy to be supporting you!

Hey, I loved the video! Content and music was awesome. The graphics playing during the video were nice too. There was just something about the flag during the opening that seemed kind of amateur to me. By no stretch of the imagination is it a deal breaker, but I do like the blue graphics during the video much more👍🏼

I preferred the storytelling of the second half to the more standard educational delivery of the first half. Great start though, looking forward to more.

Colin, you mentioned that the next episode will be quite different and more lengthy and you would let us choose which format we liked better. I'm here to suggest something different. Since the promise was 2 vids per week. How about Mondays we get the 15 min episode and Thursdays we get a more freely and less scripted episode. Sounds like a brilliant plan :) think about it

The question I was asking myself the entire time was eventually addressed at the end, but remains ambiguous. I was surprised the 2015 trial was thrown out because they weren't sure of the distinction between military Vs police in reference to the Third Amendment (TA). This seems like a crucial distinction if the amendment is to be upheld. I did a little research and it seems to be assumed the TA applies only to military, but the fact that a clear distinction doesn't exist is odd. It's a big difference and one worth clarifying! What does anyone else thing? Excellent work by the way Colin.

Colin, I'm not sure if you'll see this but I wanted to let you know that videos like this as well as your political musings in the past have given me the impetus to engage my local community as we have a big mayoral election today. I might have never written an open letter that will likely be read by hundreds of people, many of whom won't agree with me. But today was the day I felt like if I helped just one voter make their decision by giving my fair and thought out feelings on pertinent topics that I really did something of value today. I just wanted to let you know that and I look forward to all the videos going forward and seeing where you grow this community.

Really great video! I'm excited to learn from this video series. My only suggestion would be to have music at the beginning and end but take it out for the rest of the video. I say this not because it's bad by any stretch of the imagination, but because it seemed to lull me into a day-dreamy kinda mood and that made it hard to focus. Gaming personalities turning to history is probably my favourite thing right now. First Extra Credits, then Colin? If this trend keeps on going I hope I will see some videos on the history of Australia and Ireland from Ross O'Donovan ;) As a Russian who loves history, have to say, this was very interesting to watch. Keep up the good work, Colin! Also you should probably look into releasing the videos through a podcast feed since most of the illustrations in the new video were only complimentary and their lack didn't take away from the content of the talk — if that is the case with all of the videos it will be very nice to also get them as audio files to listen to when on the move.

I have a question, I'm not the most knowledgeable person in the comment section, but this has had me thinking all day after watching this, and it has yet to be answered, explained or elaborated on... Can it be debated that Eminent Domain infringes on our 3rd Amendment rights? Sure, the government is required to offer compensation for the land their taking, but to my knowledge the owner cannot deny the property seizing, nor set the price of the compensation... Would love to hear back from somebody more knowledgeable on the subject. Awesome episode, I'm hooked.

The Pride of Long Island is back! Just finished watching the first episode and I am impressed with the level of love and care you put into this video! I really enjoyed it. I can tell this is clearly what you are meant to do at the moment. It's only been the last few years or so that I have found an interest in history and politics. The later over the last year. The constitution and amendments were something that I hoped you would go into in this show some, because I don't know much about them except for common knowledge. The video was very educational! I also know you are asking for feedback so I'm going to be as honest as possible. This is a fantastic first episode, but I think the biggest issue isn't with the content, but the delivery. Know, probably 80% of this will be fixed over time. Once things become normal and you get into a rhythm, the delivery will be more natural, but at the moment, it seems a bit robotic. You can tell you are reading off a teleprompter. Try to relax more and convey the message more naturally, as if you are explaining the subject to someone sitting in front of you. Maybe you could use who ever is operating the camera for this. Explain the subject to them and even allow them to ask questions about it maybe. Don't be afraid of goofs and being silly either. Biggest note, the more natural the better and more engaging. I would also slow the pacing down a bit. I followed a good 75% of the content, but there were a few times where I had to go back because I was overwhelmed by your knowledge. Also, don't be afraid of jump cuts if you need them. On a much more positive note, the quality was great for your first episode. I liked the mix of photography and clips. It makes the content more engaging. Don't be afraid to use more of that. Especially anything Seinfeld related! Lol! I noticed some comments on the video on YouTube stated they didn't like the background music. It didn't bother me. If you have to, maybe just a little lower, but you were smart to use it. It's a great binding agent for the rest of the audio to build on. It also my be interesting to mix the music up with some era appropriate tunes! I also liked how you brought everything back to the present day. I feel like that should be a staple in every episode. Again, this is a great first video. I've been following you since your IGN days and I'm impressed to see how much you have grown. Remember to take the good and bad criticism constructively and try not to take anything negative I or anyone else has said personally. We are there for you and want to see you succeed. Keep up the good work and I look forward to what you have to show us next.

To offer some constructive criticism, I felt like I would have much rather read the content of the video in the form of an essay, than watched it on YouTube. While I think the content of the "essay" was brilliant, I think you would get a lot more engagement from your audience if you adapted your delivery to better suit its medium. When I watch a video, I want to feel like the speaker is speaking directly to me. Ask yourself this.... if a friend came to you and said, "I heard you have some interesting thoughts about the third amendment, can you tell me about it?" Would you use the same words, sentence structure, and expressions that you used in the video, or would you use more straight-forward constructs, words, and expressions (not to dumb-down the content, but just because the more sophisticated constructs simply feel out of place in normal conversation). I think if you err on the side of more straight-forward speaking, where it feels like you are engaging the audience in genuine conversation rather than just preparing a term paper and then reading it to them, you will have much greater long-term success and engagement.

Good first video. My only comment, and this is probably pedantic, is that I don't think you need to say "quote, unquote" every time especially since you have the text of the quote onscreen. With the amount of quotes you're using, which I think is good, hearing it so many times in a single video got a bit repetitive.

I don't think the material presented was too dense or presented too fast - that can be solved with multiple viewings. One think that could make it more engaging would be to introduce the relevance to our modern day earlier in the video. I have a hard time criticizing (I'm just a dude watching videos), but having the recent cases dealing the the Third Amendment presented earlier would make me care about the Amendment itself as you talk about it. However, like I said - multiple viewings help out. Thank you for the great video.

Hey Colin - great first video. I know you wanted some feedback, and the only thing I had trouble with was the assumption that the viewer knew what some of the other amendments were; I'm from the UK and have a vague understanding of some of the amendments, but not their numberings, so referring to them as 'The right to...' rather than the 1st, 2nd, 5th etc would have been helpful. Great episode Colin! I think the content was really great and the inclusion of citations and book suggestions are perfect for this kind of content. My only real negative about the first episode is I found the scrolling CLS on the left side a bit distracting. I am not totally sure if that is because it wasn't moving smoothly (I noticed a slight jitter) or just the movement itself was distracting. It might be worth testing out a static side panel, or increasing the frame rate of the panel to decrease the jitter. Overall though great work! Keep it coming!

If this was a taste of things to come, I want all seven courses. To be honest I lost my mother yesterday. Your video helped me to take a step away from that for a short time. And learned something in the process. Thank you Colin.

I also agree with a few of the points others have made throughout the comments; the delivery felt a little fast (I'd enjoy your thoughts more if they sat for a beat), the background gets a little distracting at times, and sitting at a table would add to the set and might help with the delivery. I'm sure a lot of that will come with time and once you make more of a "studio" in LA. Keep up the great work!!!

I really like the idea of a timeline graphic, but the graphic has to be a white board and dry erase marker...

Loved it! But a couple things. 1) The editing was good. The more time you spend in Premiere the better you'll get. I've been editing TV for 10 years and I still learn every day. It can be as much about technical proficiency as gut instinct. Which leads me to my second point. 2) Let things marinate. Some people noticed and I'd agree that you were moving at a quick pace at times. And it would be nice to just give things a "beat" and let your point sit. But ultimately the more you do the better you'll get and you'll start understanding the rhythm​. 3) The background is a bit distracting. What I love about Rubin's set is there's detail without it being busy. Way to go! Super happy how it turned out, and you should too​ :-)

Great first episode!! Really enjoyed learning. A couple of suggestions from someone with very little history background... 1) Slow down the delivery on different facts. It was hard for me to keep up with who was who and who you were quoting. 2) End with a summary timeline graphic showing important dates+facts.

Great first episode. Also something to note is that the Third Amendment is one of the only rights written in the Bill of Rights that has not been incorporated onto the States. The Seventh Amendment right to a jury trial in civil suits and the Fifth Amendment right to a grand jury indictment being the only other two I can think of. Although I imagine if the quartering of soldiers by a State ever occurred the Supreme Court would be quick to incorporate the Third Amendment onto the States. The Slaughterhouses cases and the slow process of incorporating the Bill of Rights onto the States was a very interesting time in our history.

Just a suggestion: What if you put this on podcast services similarly to podcasts like We Have Concerns? I feel like you're delivery doesn't necessarily rely heavily on the graphics but more so on the quotes. I think it would be a great way to give yourself more of a spread across platforms. Loved the episode! Keep it up!

Interesting takeaway, James Watson. Had to think it through but my gut says that would be a leap. I think the spirit of it is physically there. Surveillance feels different to me and covered elsewhere. And does the amendment cover groups beyond the military? NSA isn't technically. Anyway, interesting thought, so I'm still thinking. :)

With Wood's interpretation of the 3rd amendment being that the government shouldn't be in your shit and that the citizens privacy is sacred I was expecting you to bring it home by saying that the NSA is in breach of the 3rd. Is the government being in your home digitally the same thing as physically?

Excellent first episode! The minutiae is always what I've enjoyed about history; how some obscure events lead to far more famous laws or actions we now take for granted. The influence of the 3rd Amendment, as well as our American tradition of individual rights, is probably one reason that the military has Article 88 prohibitions against undermining the President or other elected officials. This is why America is not susceptible to military coups. Interesting stuff...can't wait for more!

Great job, man. I definitely feel like I learned something. So, feedback: felt like it was pretty dry and dense. Maybe it's just that I watched it pre-coffee, but I found myself losing focus throughout. Maybe pepper some more jokes/present-day examples throughout. Also, you're like a rapper or Ricky Bobby with your hands - EVERYTHING gets emphasis. Maybe having a table in front of you or even holding something (like a book or a stress ball) would minimize movement to the most necessary points. Like I said, definitely learned about a topic I didn't know anything about. Thought you might have come out swinging with something more applicable to current day (ie, like that 2017 USA vs 1930s Weimar Republic topic you keep hinting at) - I think those topics are more likely to get your videos reposted on folks Facebook walls and help grow your following. I was gonna share it (still might) but I was thinking, "I really wish he'd historically taken on Trump/SJWs/whoever" bc that would be more relevant to the people that follow me on Facebook than the Third Amendment. But, feedback and nitpicks aside, thanks for the history lesson, Professor Moriarty! Looking forward to episode 2!

Awesome premiere episode Colin, very informative with a good range of different sources and other reading to check out. Not a subject I would ever expect to watch a 17 min video on, but it flew by. As others have suggested, it would be great to offer your script to download, my only other suggestion would be to maybe try and give some more off script anecdotes or option to blend in, but that's all. Constructive feedback: the way you present some if the "straight out of the book" facts came off a bit dry. The moments, particularly in the second half, where you were giving your kind of take and feelings on the matter were the most entertaining. They had a more personal and conversational feel to them. You absolutely should give authors/historians like Wood their due, but maybe try delivering it in a more streamlined, paraphrased sort of way, but keep the bibliography available for inquiring individuals. All in all, though, top notch info! Very interesting stuff, I can't wait to learn more!

I have an idea, maybe for a patreon tier or just a bonus for your supporters. I think it'd be cool if you uploaded your actual script for people to download, read over themselves after the video and I think you could include your sources (bibliography) in that as well, instead of just having it below the video. I loved the first episode. I was familiar with the Amendment, but enjoyed seeing it discussed in further detail as you rarely see it discussed at all. :) A couple of things (as you've asked for feedback): I would make it a little less scripted, less 'reading off the cards' so to speak. And I'd slow down a little bit. Us Newfies are speedy talkers, so I could keep up. But I can see how others might lose details in the effort. Can't wait for the second episode!

If I can make a suggestion... I like these educational type vids but I'd like to see some open discussion non-scripted type content as well. Maybe just an hour long weekly podcast where you talk about your upcoming projects and we can hear your opinions on different current events. Maybe bring in guests to interview once in a while. I wonder if this amendment is relevant to the lawless spying of US Citizens going on today. Seems like it could be pertinent.

Doubtful unless 5 of 9 SCOTUS judges somehow believe or interpret government agents spying on your internet usage as "soldiers". You certainly would not get a conservative judge to agree with that broad of an interpretation of the 3rd amendment but with a liberal who knows they will read just about anything into the Constitution that they need to get the outcome that their heart wants.

Great first episode! A little constructive feedback from one history teacher to another. 1.) Topic was interesting, but i feel like it could of used an essential question (why should i care about this subject) 2.) Deeper connection to present day (obviously a little hard with this topic) 3.) Slow it down just a little, i studied this time period so i was keeping up, but i can imagine many people getting lost in how dense the topic is. Great first show, happy to support you, can't wait for the next one!

Great first episode, Colin! Since it hasn't been precisely defined, is it at all possible for the 3rd amendment to be extrapolated out to help define things like our right to privacy - on the internet or otherwise?

I also think, as he continues, that this will get more figured out. I think that video 50 will be interesting to compare to this first episode. I also think there are things that Colin says aloud that can be told visually instead (like, who certain people are...and maybe some other annotations). It takes more time in the video to add that stuff...but it helps to trim some fat. But I loved the content. I really like learning about American history from the late 1700s, and this was something that I hadn't specifically looked into before.

As a Canadian I feel like it's an extremely important part of our history, and there's a lot of interesting stories from that war. I liked the video. Great job! I had no illusion that the focus of the content wouldn't be on "american" history and politics, but as a Canadian, it was a little less applicable to me. Still interesting though!

I'm not sure how much I agree that its not relevant today. What would those same people think about the CIA, NSA, and various other government teams that assist and work with our Military of today. Personally I'd argue that they would get grouped in with the Founding Fathers concepts of what the term "Military" meant. Especially when considering the military usurping civil liberty.

The background music was a little loud. I found my foot tapping to the beat instead of listening to the video. Great lesson over all. Thank you.

Woohoo! That was great. Audio sounds perfect and video looks great. I find the graphic design work a little outside of the feeling of the show. The blue is a little too distracting to be that much of the screen. I would go with a white personally, a la John Oliver. I also think the logo itself is too big in the sidebar/background. Oliver's (which is a big inspiration to the look of the show) is a light grey on the white and much smaller. It's a visual texture more than made to look at the logo. Hope this helps! The content was awesome and so is that bangin' song. Keep up the good work!

Colin... Thank you so much. I majored in History and Education, but have since been working in a different field. This Video series is just what I needed to reinvigorate my love of history and thirst for knowledge. In this weeks topic I was most intrigued to think about the philosophical foundations of the 3rd amendment. The citizenry in essence is empowered to keep the military in check via representatives. Thinking back to Pitt' s quote it seems the King of England may not enter out homes, but rain, wind, snow, AND the NSA may. This troubles me greatly. Very thought provoking topic. Definitely informative and dense with information. I now know what the 3rd amendment is (after forgetting from grade school) and the history of how it was conceived. Despite the amount of content gathered, I personally was only able to absorb like 50% of the mini-lecture. I had trouble focusing on your message due to distractions from the background, tone of your voice and imagery. As you were speaking, my eyes wandered to the background and your voice faded away as I was glancing around at your stuff in the back. When I did try to listen to your message I often found myself lost due to the speed and lack of emphasis of message delivery. Also, the images you brought forth with quotes or dense wording made me wonder across the image analysing what was written while I simultaneously listening to you which resulted in partially hearing what you said. In the end I was thoroughly intrigued by the amount of solid knowledge you presented to us and I am definitely going to watch it again to obtain the whole history. I hope this is the kind of feedback you asked for and that it was helpful in any way. Thank you for your time.

Great job! I love that you source all your information. Things that I personally didn't like (so take this with a grain of salt and piss on said salt if you like) are the background music and your speed on delivery. The music is great for an intro and outro, but it's distracting when you are talking. I want to listen to your words not the music. I would try to slow it down a little in the middle of your sentences. You start them slow and end them slow, but in the middle it seems fast. All in all though great job on your first episode. Looking forward to more.

Thought this was a great first episode. The only suggestion I have is that I kept waiting for some kind of modern day connection. You made the relevance clear at the end, but I think it would have been more effective to establish a general thesis about the third amendment's relevance today at the beginning, before diving into the history. I think that would have given the audience a hook to keep them invested throughout the explanation. Still, I thought it was excellent, and I look forward to episode two. BTW.. I'm a history teacher, and I will be starting at a new school teaching in New York next year. Maybe I will be able to use some of these videos in my classes.

I was extremely interested in this topic, and then I got really distracted by the background with the CLS looping. I could tell when it was looped because it would stutter right before it looped. It really pulled me out of the video. I'll continue to watch this because you have very interesting subjects and are very good at articulating it to us but please fix the loop problem. Exactly what I was hoping for, the cadence, quips and cut out videos (jimquisition style) was awesome. The background music adds a lot. The product quality is way better the you lead is to believe, please don't discredit you ability to put together an awesome looking show. The hard cuts are a bit jarring but really don't take you out of it, it would be difficult to do that long of and episode in one take. Can't wait for what's to come.

Loved the video, really interesting topic, especially, as a law graduate, the idea of the third amendment in modern cases. I don't wanna be the nitpicking asshole, but since this is about knowledge I feel this is a valid learning point for everyone. Technically (as I understand it), British Prime Ministers, such as William Pitt (the Younger, is who you were referencing I think?), are not Head of State, they're only Head of Government. The Monarch is Head of State. This in contrast to the US, for example, where the President is Head of State and Government. The More You Know! (TM) Really looking forward to everything to come!

Excellent. My criticism is on your quotes. Some of them start very far over to the right. I assume this is because you took an excerpt from a book but left out the preceeding sentence. It makes it hard to follow since we are trained to naturally start at the top left when we read. Two possible solutions: 1. Type up the quotes instead of snagging them from Kindle/website/whatever. This also would fix any font dissimilarity/display issues among the quotes. 2. Have the entire quote from the book, but highlight the part you want us to read. Lastly, some of the charts were a lot to take in with little explanation. Maybe a quick word or highlight the pertinent data. Keep up the good work!!

Really well done man. The topic was great in that it's one that is so rarely covered. The flow and content was superb. Critiques: -when showing quotes, maybe highlight the important phrases. Something to pull the readers attention to the real meat of the message -placement of the prompter. It's a little disengaging when you look slightly off to the side and it becomes obvious you're reading from a script. That's it! Loved the video and can't wait for the next one!
