Colin's Last Stand, Episode 7: California's Harebrained Secession Movement (Part II)

Comments

The EU is inevitably the building of a process which should lead torward a federal union like the US. So yeah they are two different things and the historic circumstances make this process longer in the EU. So right now the UK has the right to withdraw, I'm not denying that, but the process, the consequences and the stupidity of the exit propaganda are the same. I mean literally, the arguments made by Calexit proposers and Brexiters are the same and they can all be confuted by the same answers, you can take every word Colin said here and replace the words "California and "United States" with "UK" and "European Union", it wouldn't make a difference. The selfishness and lack of a broader view are the same for the two campaigns, both trying to dig the dirt on the insitution that provided peace and economic prosperity for their people.

There is an enormous difference between the two. Great Britain is its own country. It is a sovereign nation that existed, for hundreds of years actually, before the formation of the EU. As a sovereign nation they are well within their rights to elect to leave. California on the other hand, only exists because of the US. California exists as a state within a sovereign nation, it is not a sovereign nation itself. Therefore they are not within their rights to leave, and in fact it would violate the constitution.

This two parter was a well thought out and interesting long form style piece. Only critique is try a more broader appealing topic with a stronger counter argument makes it more fun to think about

Its interesting that Colin did not point out on point 6 that they also fail to point out the resources that California gets in pretty much mass from out of state in the form for water. If California was no longer part of the the US they would be charged a massive amount to still gain the water much of the state desperately needs even now when its out of drought conditions.

Great wrap up to the video. As you've clearly laid out the movement is ridiculous and I hope it never gains traction. I'm not in California but I'd still like to think our country is in this together despite all of the politics these days.

Sticking to the facts on this topic makes it really compelling to watch and rewatch for me to understand how they came to such an odd proposal to secede. Especially on the east coast where this doesn't get discussed. Nice work!

Speaking from a UK perspective this reminds me a lot of the 'Yes' case for the Scottish Independence referendum a while back. The points you made a very similar to a lot of thinking I had from around that time. Thanks for the very informative vids.

Did you see they found another copy of the Declaration of Independence from the 1780s in England? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/04/24/world/declaration-of-independence-england-trnd/index.html

Gonna just blow these comments up, don't mind me. Would love to see a video topic/series on the "Fight for 15" that has this same structure and research. I know, deep down in my balls, that it's a bad idea and that the numbers are inflated by the educated left, but don't have the time or energy to do the level of research I would want to do. I know you feel the same way. In your balls, I mean.

Much love for the bottle of Michter's in the background. Absolutely my favorite bourbon!

Another positive feedback item: I really enjoyed the "stick-to-the-facts" style here. Less conjecture and hyperbole and more statistics I can use against my far-left father-in-law. Side note: hyphens are in an inconvenient location on iPhone keyboards, especially for sentences like that.

Ryan Berry

Another very well done episode. My only criticism is really a stylistic one: a bit too much extremism in your perspective, though I will also say I appreciate the passion you have. I can't win!

Ryan Berry

Just like the first episode, as a European the only thing I can think of while watching this video is the disatrous decision of leaving the EU that the British took last year. Literally every single argument against Calexit you expressed here can be made against Brexit, for the most part the arguments in favour of the exit are the same. Californians, if this would ever to become a decision up to a vote let selflessness and brotherhood be your guide instead of the egoism this kind of campains bring up.

Great video. Its interesting how Colin plays down the role of the federal education department's country wide standards considering he supports abolishing the department. Some of the adapted teach to the test policies among school districts across the nation are probably the strongest argument for abolishing the department and giving states and districts even more control over education standards in their areas.

Matthew Kohlman

Fantastic content - thank you very much for taking the time to break this down and not shying away from producing longer vids.

Eric Gee

Awesome video, Col. Hope this doesn't get too much traction. It just doesn't make sense. Be part of the country California. God dammit.

Khalil Sadi

Great vid! Love the high audio and video quality on these scripted videos to compliment the interesting content.

It's pretty interesting to learn more about California. Things we do right and things we do wrong. You had a lot of interesting facts and statistics.

Misty

Pretty sure 'Yes California' was created by Andy Kaufman in 1979, but shouldn't we be discussing the opportunity cost of not pushing California to secede? Peter Thiel backs calexit, and he got Trump right.

Jeremy Meyer

Great video and like some of the sub topics I am going to look more into. Would you do a video of states that could thrive better being separate from the US even though I know it is more treason?

Thanks for another well-researched video Colin. I appreciate you sticking to the information that the movement itself stated and provided, rather than focusing on the alleged Russia connection etc. It's important that we stick to debating ideas and not just finger-wagging at rumors.
