Colin's Last Stand, Episode 28: It's Time to Legalize (and Normalize) Prostitution

It's all upside for everyone involved: prostitute, john, government, and society alike.

That is strange. Multiple people brought that up, and I wish I brought it up in the video. C'est la vie.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! It's that Italian skin.

Colin Moriarty

1.) It's an interesting point, but I think the major differentiation would be that sex between consenting adults is normal and legal. Killing is generally illegal. 2.) You'd have to be more specific; in Nevada, it's been legal for 100+ years. Few municipalities, large or small, even bring it up, otherwise.

Colin Moriarty

I think your view is unrealistic. I'd say a majority of sex is for lust, attraction, and something more base and primal. I think that's totally okay, as long as all parties are consenting adults.

Colin Moriarty

?!

Colin Moriarty

I'm a big fan of consistency. And I think it's ridiculous that prostitution is illegal...unless you film it and call it porn.

James Young

Great video! One of my favourites so far. The production quality definitely looks better too. You don't look so pale from the lighting today... in fact you're quite tanned! Haha

Ryan Blushke

Dude, Colin great video. Definitely something I've never thought about. 2 things I'm curious about. 1. About consistency and consent, where could that eventually stop? For instance, 2 consenting people say they'll fight in a ring to the death. That's an incredibly extreme example but I think you get what I mean. Is it basically things we know would cause harm (ie. fighting to the death) 2. I like how you include a lot of examples of other places where it is legal. It got me wondering why the law was proposed and put into place in the first place. That's some added info that I feel like would have been helpful for the episode. Keep up the good work!

A little late to this video, but wanted to point out some comparison with Prop 60 that went through California last year regarding the porn industry. Figured you might have more insight into that than me, since you're from the area. Even moving beyond porn, I realize this is kind of crass/cynical, but from a legal standpoint, how different is prostitution from paying for someone's dinner or drink before spending the night? Morally I can definitely see a distinction, but I'm rarely in favor of the government dictating morals.

Love has created many of the positive outcomes of history, and many of the great interpersonal decisions that you or I make on a daily basis. Love is truly one of the only pure emotions, that is unabated, and leads to generosity, tolerance, and acceptance. But, that aside, I do agree it should be legal... If as you said, two consenting adults WANT to do that, they should be able too, but I strongly believe that such a limited and gross animalistic and primal view of sex should be stigmatized in a progressive society.

Andrew Christensen

Man, I dunno if I can totally agree on the "normalization" aspect of the video... I understand the argument that it's their own life, their own decision, their own body, their own sex... But as for myself I don't believe that prostitution (although very historical) should ever be "normal". Sex should be between to consenting partners who wish to express, in at least some form or another, love. And love is a powerful thing, something I am not sure is given enough clout in our new society.

Andrew Christensen

Excellently put Eric.

Ian Andrews

Bring it up!

Illuminati Games

Italian + Santa Monica + Appropriate ISO Level on Camera = That =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! I appreciate your support. Welcome aboard, and enjoy the backlog!

Colin Moriarty

Why condemn, though? If everyone involved is of-age and consenting, I'm not sure our condemnation is necessary, nor matters. If a person wants to spend money to fulfill his need of lust, then how is it any different than him drinking a bottle of bourbon or blowing his money at a casino? The individual has to take responsibility for his or her actions (which is precisely why I'm so staunchly pro-death penalty).

Colin Moriarty

Glad you liked the show! Be sure to enter your show idea into the Topic Primary so others can vote on it. =)

Colin Moriarty

Glad you like the show! You made one point that I wanted to elaborate on, which was that there will still be illegal prostitution. This is true! Just as in Colorado and Washington, people still sell weed on the black market. The trick here, to me, is to get the taxing and regulatory balance right so that it's literally more expensive and more inconvenient to partake illegally. If I recall correctly, Colorado has executed perfectly, while Washington didn't, and so Colorado's black market has collapsed. At the end of the day, it's all about the dollar.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! We're making good progress.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed! Legalizing prostitution isn't even on the radar's radar, but I thought it would be a fun topic to do, anyway.

Colin Moriarty

Ultimately, the government shouldn't be involved with morality. It should be involved with protecting and securing individual and collective rights.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed! I have no issue whatsoever with regulating and taxing it.

Colin Moriarty

This was such a great show. The first I've watched. Instantly fell in love with your show and became a patron. Can't wait to watch the backlogs.

I think that it should probably be legal but that it should, at the same time, be made known that selling sex is a deeply damaging act, and one that only distorts further the act of sex, love, and relationships. So don't legislate against it but routinely condemn it. There is a lot to be said for the notion that treating sex like its no big deal, that it has nothing to do with feelings, moves us further away from a society that promotes relationships built on shared values and not just physical lust.

Samuel

JESUS! Great show! I think the idea of being consistent with your ideals being applied to different aspects of life is absolutely key here in this hyper adversarial political environment. I really love the idea of you applying your "heart" to all these things to illustrate this point (Transgender rights and so on). Really amazing video. Bravo. I would like to see you tackle maybe more Gray areas however. Example being something like federal agricultural subsidies or stuff like that where you could really make a case either way. Me being an unapologetic "Free-Marketer", it is harder to make your case for that sort of stuff in the face of Zero-sum games in the economy. Just a thought though, keep up the good work.

Prostitution can be legal and can be abused. Abuse is at the heart of all issues in this country. Disability abuse, welfare abuse, drug/alcohol abuse. People abusing political power, cops abusing their authority , business people abusing their power over their employees. Prostitution would in my opinion have to be highly regulated. Just like any industry it would be abused there would still be illegal prostitution. Which could lead to even more human trafficking. Human trafficking is brushed under the rug way too much in my opinion. We are talking about modern slavery. When you can literally raise young girls/boys to know there job is a sex worker when they become legal age is legal, I'm afraid that opens Pandora's box. Parenting is not regulated nor should it be, but think about it. There is no law raising your kid to be a racist, a bigot, ain't-government, religious, whatever you want you can raise your children. Some sick son of a bitch will now legally raise his kids to become sex workers for personal benefit. I have personally worked with people that have been in the business. There is a psychological toll to being a prostitute. I would deduct that a lot of the people in the industry, johns or prostitutes probably did not have the best childhood and may have been physically or psychologically abused. I do not have a problem with the legalization of prostitution if it is done right, and is regulated. People have free choice, men and woman can pay for sex all day and night as far as I'm concerned, but as devils advocate there are some issues with it. Love the show brother!

Great improvement on the lighting! Looks good.

Jeff Bernstein

I just want to at least be having the conversation. I think that we're where we're at with the drug conversation because we've been willing to talk about it. Once people start the discussion I think it becomes pretty obvious how silly some of our culturally ingrained views of things like prostitution are. Hopefully we'll get there soon

We totally see eye to eye on this. Even though there is a separation between church and state does anyone feel like the morals based on religious beliefs could be something that holds a change like this back?

Tristan

I definitley agree, as long as it is regulated I don't see why the government should criminalize prostitution. Legalizing it would only benefit the workers, the users and even the governenment. Also, if it's illegal it's not like it won't exits, it will still be there and it won't go away, but it will cause (as it does right now) only negative effects on everyone who deals with it. So yeah, time to legalize to everyone's benefit.
