Fireside Chats, Episode 19: Game of the Year 2017 Discussion

The calendar just flipped over into a new year, so it only makes sense that we chat about what the best video games of 2017 were. In order to make the conversation great, I invited SIFTD's Shane Satterfield to Santa Monica to talk about what we thought were the cream-of-the-crop titles of the previous 12 months. This is a great companion piece to the Best Games of 2017 video that went live on Side Quest's YouTube channel, and fleshes everything out over a meaty 100 minute chat.

Thank you for your support! <3

Colin Moriarty

I am back as a Patreon supporter after I had to take a break financially and I am so glad that Colin still has a love for games! I got lost in BotW which is what put it just ahead of Horizon for me, but Horizon was my third favorite with Persona 5 being my favorite. I agree with Colin that Mario Odyssey is overrated, but I really enjoyed the consumable weapons in Zelda and its emptiness.

Ryan Martinson

Noted! I'd be down to play a little ball hockey at Venice Beach (can take the guy out of Canada, but can't take Canada out of the guy...)

Ross Arbour

It's an amazing game.

Colin Moriarty

Wear sunscreen! =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! I'm glad to be sharing them.

Colin Moriarty

Horizon is so damn good. The combat alone is impressive. Fast and fluid mechanics are hard to come by now days.

LE

I enjoyed this conversation! I wasn't familiar with your guest, but definitely his work -- I grew up on G4 and GameTrailers! Unrelated, but plan to visit L.A. and wondering if you have any tips?

Ross Arbour

Great conversation - very grateful to have your gaming opinions again!

Kenny Gutzler

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad the episode resonated with you.

Colin Moriarty

I'm sure I'll have him on again to talk games in the future. =D

Colin Moriarty

To hear two people in the industry discuss BotW with an OUNCE of perspective was worth every cent I've ever contributed to this patreon. The game is real good, great even, but that 97 on metacritic is just absurd. The nintendo score bump is too real. Colin - brother - thank you.

Best story of how Horizon Zero Dawn came to life is Danny O’Dwyer from No Clips video on the creation of Horizon Zero Dawn. Really enjoyed this fireside chat Colin. Really great having Shane on the show and I would like seeing this pairing again in the future.

Eric S

I don't know anything about the site beyond what he told me on the show (and then I read a bit about it thereafter), so I'm kinda on the outside looking in, in that regard.

Colin Moriarty

Great that you had Shane on. He's a hard worker for sure and I'd never question that but his Siftd venture was underwhelming and Shane would continually ask folks for money to support his venture instead of showing folks why we should pay for his content. Very off putting.

Gustavo

Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words!

Colin Moriarty

He's clearly a hard-working and knowledgeable dude, and I was happy to have him on.

Colin Moriarty

Really loved this chat Colin. My favorite content from you has always been your take on games, why you like, why you dont, it makes me think more critically about games and pick better games to play. And as someone with really limited time to play, hearing about what's good, and what is off the radar (ie. Night in the Woods) is hugely valuable in making decisions on where to spend those gaming minutes. Thanks, keep up the great work!

Bryan Finck

Then you just do it after the story cutscenes. It’s not like the confidants disappear. The story has to move forward somehow lol.

Jacob Boyd

Thanks for inviting Shane on to your show Colin! Been following Shane even longer than when I first started watching you in the Beyond days. Been at SIFTD since the start and don't know why it hasn't caught on yet. So thanks for giving Shane the exposure. He deserves it. He's a very hard working good guy. :D

Liam Argent

I kinda agree with Shane on this one. There were times where I had plans to do things for a specific day, but cutscenes or the game’s plot would make the game move forward a few days forward and your plans to put time towards boosting stats or strengthening bonds with allies would be out the door.

And I totally understand playing with friends, that's what got me into it as well. I normally only play single player experiences.

Owen

Yeah I hear yuh but from a looting perspective and everything, it really needs mouse and keyboard support. It's doable, but watching how you have to pickup items and do attachments and stuff it just doesn't work for me. And this coming from someone who normally prefers controller on almost all games. It's just not optimized well at all, and runs very poorly in comparison. -- but hey if you're having fun thats awesome I understand.

Owen

I disagree I’m playing it on Xbox and have been having a blast. I’m playing with friends that haven’t gamed in 10 years. I know it runs better in PC but you get that same experience that everyone has been taking about.

SuiZide King

It sounds really cool. I love the premise. Something Battle Royale-style, but with super intelligent AI and some plot/character/gameplay depth could be really cool for single-player folks like me!

Colin Moriarty

30 frames on PUBG... ouch.. sunk 200 hours into it. It's fun. He's right it's not for everyone, but in terms of multiplayer experience. You haven't felt gaming adrenaline until you're in a top 20, top 10, top 5 situation on PUBG. On XBONE it absolute trash though, no business being on that console.

Owen

I'm sure we'll collaborate again in the future! Glad you enjoyed it. =)

Colin Moriarty

I don't know anything about it, so it wasn't an error (if there was one) I was able to correct in realtime.

Colin Moriarty

You and Shane had some very interesting discussions and good chemistry. Any chance we will see future collaborations between you two? Also Siftd.net is awesome, you even get achievements, level up and distribute attribute points!

SuiZide King

This guy has no idea what he is talking about when he was complaining about persona 5 ‘s time element. It doesn’t take time away for cutscenes. That was time set aside for the cutscene. You never had that time. Everyone has the same amount of time it their game.

Jacob Boyd

I hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

I'm sorry to hear about your father's passing, and am glad the game resonated with you at just the right time.

Colin Moriarty

Cool! Glad to see that you got Shane on here for a chat! I will be listening to this very soon.

Alex Castellanos

BOTW is my GOTY, but I also don't have a problem admitting that Zelda is my favorite franchise of all time I strongly disliked BOTW for the first 5 hours or so, then all of a sudden the vision clicked with me, and I was sucked in. I beat it on Wii U and then when my father died this summer I bought a Switch, and sunk another 120 hours into it in handheld mode. The world empty as it may be is full of wonder, and the physics are some of the best I've ever experience. It got me through my father's death, so theres something to be said for that as well. - I hear and understand the comment of overrated, but I honestly don't think it applies here. But hey that's just my admittedly biased opinion. -- Fun discussion nonetheless, and sorry for the long comment.

Owen

My own feelings on the game are so complicated. Maybe I'll do a video on it one of these days.

Colin Moriarty

Game of the Year is definitely Breath of the Wild. I can see the overrated argument. I can't explain away the feelings that game gave me though. I felt free and excited around every corner. Love hearing other opinions.

Carson Smith

Stick with it! It's a satisfying Plat.

Colin Moriarty

I loved HZD so much I want to go back and platinum (I only have one from Hitman GO). But that Blazing Suns at all Grounds trophy though... =/

Lucas Gremista

=)

Colin Moriarty

"first of all I want to start by saying, and I've said it before, I think the game is overrated" - to you sir, I raise my glass.

Eric Gee

For me, those are three great games. Love(d) 'em all.

Colin Moriarty

Loved Zelda played it first then i played HZD, Zelda ruined HZD for me as far as wanting to go anywhere and the physics. Mario Odyssey was a game that i could not stop smiling the whole time. Great Interview Colin.

Hose A Contra Razz

Cool! I'm sure Shane will appreciate that.

Colin Moriarty

This was recorded five days ago.

Colin Moriarty

enjoyed this episode. just joined SIFTD as well.

Joey Finelli

Was this one recorded weeks ago like your SF interviews or recently? Just wanna know if you've played more BOTW since those interviews.
