Side Quest, Episode 6: Colin Moriarty's Game(s) of the Year 2017

Comments

Both are really interesting and well worth a watch

Tony Colton

A fine list!

Colin Moriarty

My Games of the Years were, Zelda, Mario, Nier, HzD, Cup head

Hose A Contra Razz

I've not, no!

Colin Moriarty

I appreciate your kind words! The beauty of CLS is I can kinda just do whatever I want... so I'm glad when it works out. =D

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

Bart hit the nail on the head: This is supposed to be fun. A leisure activity. People put too much pressure on them to see everything, to play everything. Who cares? What are you trying to prove? It's easy for teenagers and 20-somethings with no/few responsibilities and absurd amounts of free time to lecture adults about how much they should be playing, but ultimately, the real world is what counts, and gaming is secondary or tertiary.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support! It's truly fantastic to be back in the fold, and I'm so pleased that what I'm doing is resonating with folks.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you dug the format! I will keep it in mind moving forward, where appropriate.

Colin Moriarty

I hope to get to it within the next year. That's the best that I can do for the time being.

Colin Moriarty

Have you seen the Noclip documentary on Horizon and also Eurogamer digital foundry had a great look at the technology behind the frozen wilds

Tony Colton

I really loved this format! It’s far more honest on an individual level, as I certainly have those 2017 games that I didn’t play but have still admired from afar. While it makes sense that a publication may not be able to do this, I think it’s awesome that you took advantage of your situation and did something different. One can’t legitimately argue with a list so personal and the personal aspect is what made it one of the most interesting GotY lists I’ve seen :)

As a fellow aging gamer, I think you should take it easy on yourself. Gaming is supposed to be fun, not a source of stress or embarrassment. Just wanted to say, no shame in that game. Tons of big name games I never got around to because of work/family. You should never feel embarrassed because you put life/family in front of video games. (and hope no one ever gives you grief for missing out)

Bart Labeda

Best yet! I loved the format.

Chris Holtzer

I am sort of in a similar boat in that I consider myself a dedicated gamer but the realities of being 32 with all the time-constraints of a career and family, that I sometimes feel embarrassed that I haven't gotten around to many of the buzzworthy games this year. For me, the games I just absolutely adored _also_ happened to be ones I could finish in a single sitting: Life Is Strange - Before the Storm was a real joy. Also, I really enjoyed Mass Effect: Andromeda. Any excuse to explore that universe.

Michael Schofield (making Audio Dramas)

Maaan I just love it when you talk games.

Michael Schofield (making Audio Dramas)

Hi Colin. I'm new to your Patreon. I've finally decided to start donating after getting a few episodes into Side Quest. When I heard you were talking about games again I was ecstatic. Back when you were at Kinda Funny there was a sense of closeness in the community. The way you'd do things like host podcasts from your apartment made me feel like I was listening to a conversation between two of my friends. That's something they severely lack now. It's also something I missed greatly. Until now. I have my boy back. Someone who I share many opinions with, but yet can challenge my opinion just enough from time to time to try something new. I'd never have played Danganronpa without you. All I'm trying to say is, thank you. Thank you for coming back to us. I, and I'm sure many others, have missed you dearly.

Daddy Dilkers

I actually really enjoyed this format. Horizon was undoubtedly my GOTY (the only game I've ever platinum-ed), but I don't have a Switch and never got around to Pyre or Prey, games from studios that I love. Including these types of games on year end lists feels more relatable for those of us not in the industry.

Josh Squires

I can't believe (well I can, because we're all busy) you haven't played danganronpa yet... I really do want to hear your thoughts on (to be vague) certain parts of it. :P

Dale Son

I think if this was a more "traditional" year for me, I would have had far more indie games. But alas, I didn't have the time to delve into too many of them this year. 2018 will be a year of new games and catching up, alike!

Colin Moriarty

I really liked Prey, and I felt like it didn't get the attention it deserved.

David Mann

Great stuff mate! I like how you separated it because the main issue i have with GOTYs is that no one could possibly play everything to have an opinion on one game in context with everything else. For me mine were: Golf Story, What Remains of Edith Finch, COD WW2, Slime Rancher, Diablo 3 Necromancer add on. Played bits of all the other triple A games, but I gotta be honest with myself, these games had me!

Smokey Joh

I'm working my way through Prey (and more Zelda) currently, but I think Cuphead's gonna be next.

Colin Moriarty

Horizon is a good choice but it didn't resonate me like my game of the year Persona 5 did. I can't wait to hear what you think of Cuphead and as a fellow Danganronpa fan I really need to know your reaction to the game. I enjoyed the video format as well great job as usual.

strawhatninja

I played it for a small sliver of time before it came out. Didn't resonate with me, so I moved on.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. =D

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! I'll have to check it out.

Colin Moriarty

It's kinda just there for me. Too many options; not enough time. Looks great, though, and I'm sure I'd love it if I dedicated the time to playing it. But it's unlikely that I will.

Colin Moriarty

There's a lot to love with RE7. You can probably get it fairly cheap these days, too.

Colin Moriarty

One game that I was surprised you didn't mention at all was Nier Automata. Did you play it at all? If not do you plan on getting to it ever? While I'm not generally the biggest fan of action RPGs, the story and soundtrack in Nier is fantastic. Also the replayability is high. Curious on your thoughts there.

Owen

Really enjoyed the episode, Colin. Keep it up!

Ryan Carrig

DOS2* lol

David Kramme

Great video Colin, I think when Divinity Original Sin hits consoles it’s going to blow your mind!

David Kramme

Agree with you on Horizon and Southpark. I love both those games to the end! Where are you on Persona 5?

Joey Finelli

Loved the format, it was a great way to do it. I have to get into Resident Evil 7 now, the past games have made me not want to jump into it but thanks for the info, I think I will have to go check it out now.

Jason

Thank you! I agree. Numbering (like scoring) is often (though not always) stupid.

Colin Moriarty

I play almost exclusively on PlayStation hardware, so I just look at my Trophies to see what I've played.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I still need to get to the Frozen Wilds.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you enjoyed my take on the otherwise rather predictable list format.

Colin Moriarty

No comments apart from what I've already shared (I'm excited, cautiously optimistic, not crazy about 2.5D but also understand why they did it, et cetera). Once we see more, I'll have more of an opinion worth sharing.

Colin Moriarty

Hey, they don't want me to show their games, so... this is what they get instead! =D

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you agree. Zelda is really great -- I'm about to play more when I'm done answering comments -- but Horizon is better.

Colin Moriarty

Just wanted to say I enjoyed your GOTY format. It's very refreshing to not get caught up in the hoopla of numbering your favorite games.

Any one else keep a list of games they beat the throughout the year? I find it a great way to keep focused and chip away at the backlog. 27 beat last year, I will also hashtag it on Twitter such as #GamesBeat20XX(fill in the year) for easy access, I hope it catches on so I can see what others completed.

Diego Macias

I really liked the format of this video. Recognize the games you want to recognize! And I agree regarding Horizon. I didn't get to all of the big games that came out this year, but Horizon is far and away my favorite. I played for two hours just yesterday, finishing some quests before I tackle the rest of the Frozen Wilds DLC.

Brent Lindquist

Definentlty enjoy this type of list over a standard numeric one. Horizon is the 1st game I wanna play once I get a ps4 again.

Will Caldwell

Colin any comments on MegaMan 11? Sorry super curious of your opinion. But super good video and I liked how you explained you can't get to all games. Very good point that most people should mention when doing lists like these

These drawings that fill in for Nintendo footage are hilarious!

Daniel Boyer

I agree about Horizon, it was my favorite game of 2017. I think it was so much more interesting and better than Breath of the Wild (still good).
