Side Quest, Episode 10: Can Nintendo Maintain Switch's Meteoric Success?

Comments

I haven't played much of Nintendo since the Gamecube, although I did play some DS games (Pokemon and Order of Ecclesia, the last one I remember fondly...). But I want to get back into it and the Virtual Console will be the biggest selling point for me. Being a mostly broke ass college student, I'd like to get most of my money's worth and fill in that huge Nintendo gap. Great video btw! Very informative and concise. As always, keep it up man.

For someone not mathematically-inclined, I really do love data. LOL. I don't know what their plan is. More retro-styled Zelda and Marios are simpler to make and could work (and do sell well, too). But is that what people really want? I dunno. I'd certainly take a 2D Mario over a 3D one any day.

Colin Moriarty

I think it's this fall, but I'm not positive.

Colin Moriarty

Excellent video. I feel you're at your best when commenting on sales data like this. I agree that Nintendo has already dropped two of their three biggest IP, most likely not going to see another mainline Zelda/Mario on Switch and may have a really long gap between releases of top titles. You think there's any chance they would release the next 3DS Zelda/Mario on both systems to satiate Switch owners? A link between worlds was released in 2013 and 3D land back in 2011, so I'd hope they are preparing for another in that style soon.

Will Switch get Virtual Console this year? Is it even planned?

Robby Deadman

Fair enough. =)

Colin Moriarty

It would be smart, but I would keep it somewhat restrained. I don't want to be constantly reminded and interrupted all the time just to be told I could be doing something on my mobile device. I am a huge Fire Emblem fan, but I have no interest in the mobile game.

Carson Smith

I feel like they are missing an opportunity if they don't find a way to tie the mobile game into the Switch version of Fire Emblem. It could be a great gateway into the full game and get more users on their system. You are already playing portable on your phone, now come over and try the beefy version, still portable, on Switch.

Ray Briggs

It’s a testament to the quality of their two pillars that it sold as well as it has so far. I love Nintendo, but after being burned last gen, I’m going to need a new Zelda (not the one I have for wiiu) before they see me come back.

Chris B

Soft sales because its the same game as 20 years ago. Here is hoping ninteno and game freak take a bold step!

Joey Finelli

Indeed. I feel like it's less of a gimmick than Wii or Wii U. It's practical, well-made, and has the games to back it all up.

Colin Moriarty

It's truly unbelievable that they don't have that sorted out yet.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I think Switch is a worthy investment, at least from my perspective.

Colin Moriarty

I think you may be right, particularly with the success of the recent 3DS games AND the mobile game.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you liked the video! I saw Xenoblade Chronicles II sold a million, which is great, but that's more in-line with I think many of their first party products moving forward, outside of those so-called Big Hitters. We shall see!

Colin Moriarty

It's possible, though DS-to-3DS was a totally generational jump.

Colin Moriarty

It's possible! Majora's Mask's production turnaround was something insane. Like, 18 months. Now, that was a different time and era (I can't believe it was nearly two decades ago... fuck, I'm old). I dunno that they'd be able to turn around a Zelda game, even reusing assets and the engine, before 2020 at the earliest.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed.

Colin Moriarty

Pokémon and Smash are going to be big, ALTHOUGH I will say that the last Pokémon game on 3DS apparently sold pretty soft (relatively speaking).

Colin Moriarty

You're a Quick Man.

Colin Moriarty

I feel like the Switch's fate will rest on how many people use it in portable mode. For me it just sits in the cradle and is my first party only machine because I don't travel. I'm still doing everything 3rd party on my PS4. Everytime I hear someone say 'This would be perfect on Switch' I think I'd rather have it on PS4 with trophies and proper online support. I feel like Switch sales could plateau if I'm the rule. But if I'm the exception and the non-gaming media gamers out there love portable mode then sales continue to move up, 3rd party follows and after the first Switch-Only Pokemon game launches the Switch sees crazy sales numbers.

Ray Briggs

Soon as they launch a virtual console I’m sold, I need my retro games first

Christopher Hopkins

Good video. Am now saving for a switch since they now have enough games I want to play to make it worthwhile.

Peter Campbell

Colin, one franchise that really had a resurgence is the Fire Emblem franchise. We are getting a mainline fire emblem supposedly this year on switch. I know you are not a big fan of that franchise, but with the success of the newer 3DS games and the mobile game, Fire Emblem is red hot right now. Also I know it's probably going to be a port, but Smash Bros will be coming to the Switch in some form soon. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Carson Smith

Xeno 2 sold 1 million since its release, LABO i believe is going to be more STEM than a gimmick for kids. I own all the systems but when a game releases on all systems I'm buying it on Switch just because i mostly play on the go. Great video Colin!

Hose A Contra Razz

What if they do something like they did with DS where they launch new versions of it with better hardware?

Owen

If Nintendo plays their cards right with first party titles, the Switch could be a great success. Imagine a new Zelda out in 2019 (a la Majora's mask) using BotW as a baseline. And Nintendo execs are 100% pushing for a new Pokemon this fall or early next year. It might just be a run-of-the-mill Pokemon game but that'll make Switches fly off the shelves regardless of it's quality. Great stuff, Colin! P.S. Kid Icarus would be a landmine in an otherwise smooth ride for Nintendo.😜😜

Moiz Khan

Another great episode even if I'm not a Nintendo fan any more

Alex Tittensor

Depends how long first party games take... you toss out 3 new FP in a year and they will be fine. a true Pokemon RPG on switch will move units alone.

Joey Finelli

Nintendo bump says yes.
