KnockBack, Episode 3: The Art of Retro Video Game Collecting

On today's all-new episode of CLS: KnockBack, Dagan and I discuss the ever-growing retro game collecting scene. Dagan is an avid and dedicated collector of old games (particularly NES, SNES, Famicom, and Super Famicom), and has tons of insight and lots of interesting stories about what it's like being a collector these days. This is a really fun and lively episode, and I hope you enjoy it.

KnockBack, Episode 3: The Art of Retro Video Game Collecting

Comments

Mostly just re acquired a couple of games I used to have that I regrettably sold at some point or another. Hoping to make some more progress in 2019 though!

John Quinn

I think I agree with you completely. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out in the future.

Colin Moriarty

I used to say it like that too. It was beaten out of me at IGN.

Colin Moriarty

That's so cool. How's the collection going?

Colin Moriarty

Super late to the conversation. I think retro game collecting ends with the ps2/Xbox/GC era, like someone said before. With the digital revolution, it will become a factor of which version of the game you would want. Is one patch perferred over another. Some disc based games may not even function due to the now infamous day one patch. Plus disc do not last forever. There is such a thing as "disc rot" or digital degradation where the media may just stop working.

Haha I never realised that the upsidedown PS1 was a thing thought it was just mine 😂 Also love that you and Dagan(especially) pronounce Mario correctly 😉 Another great episode thanks

Tony Colton

After listening to this, I’ve been starting to get into N64 collecting. I’ve been trying to get into retro collecting for a while, but have had a hard time knowing how and where I should start. I like Dagan’s strategy of setting a budget and picking specific obtainable goals to focus on. It helped me figure out what I wanted to do

John Quinn

Thank you so much for listening! I'm glad you enjoyed.

Colin Moriarty

Just finished the episode this morning. Thoroughly enjoyed it sir. Most definitely my favorite so far. Keep up the good work guys!

Ethan Mitchell

That's true. That's a good point. In many ways, N64, PSone, and Saturn were testing grounds for what was to come.

Colin Moriarty

For me the line between retro and modern gaming is whenever the games style changed, as of during Playstation 1 era. The games evolved not just graphically with 3D but how a lot more types of work went into it from outside, such as story, camera work, movie producers etc.. As we then arrived at the PS2 we definitely had arrived to the modern era.

Philip Andersen

Thank you for your kind words! The GI Joe episode is awesome... you'll hear it in a few weeks!

Colin Moriarty

CLS Knock Back is probably my favorite CLS podcast. I am 34, so the podcast has me feeling super nostalgic. It's also really nice to see you working with your brother and getting to spend more time with him. Also, Dagan has a different perspective because of his (slightly) older age, and it is refreshing to hear his thoughts and memories on things. I can't wait for the GI Joe episode! Snake eyes was the coolest looking figure in my opinion. Keep up the great work guys!

Dustin Henry

Thank you! Virtual Console will be big for Switch, when the time comes.

Colin Moriarty

Another great episode! You and Dagan really have something special going with this series. I have a strangely nostalgic bit for the GameCube of all things. I have my fingers crossed we’ll get it with the Switch’s Virtual Console.

Adam Niksch

Thank you! I'm headed there in early April, so I'll see what I can do. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying everything.

Colin Moriarty

Oh man, I've had a crazy weekend, I finally was able to finish this episode. Colin, Dagan.. I LOVED IT! This was a blast. Guys, for real, we need that video version of Dagan's collection! And whenever you guys get around to doing some let's plays, I'll be all over it. I don't even like let's play videos. But I like you guys, and if its more CLS, I'm in. This was great. Thanks a lot. Bye guuuyyyyssss (stealing Dagan's bit)

Ian (616Entertainment)

My comment is out of order but great job with the expansion of topics and formats. Really enjoyed the fireside chat with Jono Pech. I had never heard of him or the Rubin Report before you pointed them out. Nice!

Ivan Greenspan

I think there's some truth to that, yeah. And you're very welcome. Thanks for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it.

Colin Moriarty

I immediately dashed to Mega Man and see that you have all six. Very good. No Castlevania III, though?! =) Nice collection!

Colin Moriarty

Put down the drugs.

Colin Moriarty

I wonder if some of us just need to own and experience something, something tangible from a simpler time as another form of escapism. Life can get complicated. Thankyou for including my question.

Christian Doolan

Just finished the episode, enjoyed it a lot.

John Bury

Love the episode, I started my NES collection by buying all the black labels games took me about 1 year to complete. I use an app to track my collection and share with folks of what I have http://my.puregaming.org/?u=23622949&sys=NES

Hose A Contra Razz

Michelangelo and its not even close.

Lateralus833

Thank you so much. That's really kind of you!

Colin Moriarty

I’m absolutely loving knockback so far, keep it up Colin, you and your brother are awesome together.

Brandon harris

He'd be #2 for me, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

I completely agree. Thanks for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the show so far.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, you make a good point in the updates/firmware/etc. thing, too. It's all going to cause massive complications.

Colin Moriarty

Oh man, are you in for a treat!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I think once we can get Dagan to Japan, we can do an awesome Japanese-centric episode.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! We really appreciate that.

Colin Moriarty

You are correct they wanted the NES to look like a VCR because they wanted to disassociate with the top loading game consoles.

Hose A Contra Razz

Raphael for life!

Cameron Paterson

Awesome episode! I think that the fact that video games have an established retro segment is incredibly important as it helps legitamize the medium and show how it has adapted to what the audience wants and continually evolved. Keep carving out your niche, it's only going to grow as you connect your own past experiences to the future.

Ryan Sampson

Another awesome episode, you two have a great rapport and conversational style. I've always enjoyed your off the cuff, conversational type stuff best, Knockback is becoming my favorite part of CLS. Thanks for all the content, keep up the great work!

Bryan Finck

Retro collecting is a deep hole I almost went into. Is stopped around 50 nes games. My friend made it easy when he was getting rid of his for $75 with about 10 games. I feel the line for retro will end up being the ps2/Xbox/gc era. The final one where you put the disc in and it just works. No dlc, no updates, etc. Attaching hard drives to them has made it to where we don’t have to worry about the lens wearing out.

Chris B

Loving knockback so far! Relating to retro games, I always remembered you talking about final fantasy 6 from beyond days until now. Never played a final fantasy, but I started 6 yesterday. That intro :0 .... thanks for what you do!

Robert Graham

What an episode! Great stuff. I think it would be awesome to hear about more of your experiences with nerd culture in Japan! That’s a place I’ve always wanted to go to.

Will Hahn

I could be wrong, but I believe Nintendo designed the NES the way they did was because they wanted it to resemble VCR player. Something about American culture and owning bulky electronics.

Michael Miller

Big fan of Knockback. You guys obviously you guys have great chemistry and it makes the show.

Brian Dewire

No, sorry. You can use the Patreon app to listen early, or the RSS feed, but podcast services aren't fed KnockBack until six days after an episode first goes live here.

Colin Moriarty

Is there a way to download these episodes early on my phone using a podcast service?

Jose Lira

That's incredibly high praise. Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

I'm really loving this series! I think this might be my favorite podcast that you've done, and I've been following you since the old Podcast Beyond days. Keep up the good work!

Cody Manninen

We go into that, my dude. We both sold shit we shouldn't have, and it will always be painful. =\

Colin Moriarty

Do you mean you missed the thread that went live, or that you missed having that included in a show in some way?

Colin Moriarty

No. =)

Colin Moriarty

I do. =) They all went as long as they needed... and I think the shortest one is an hour and 15 minutes. My goal is to always make each of them at least an hour.

Colin Moriarty

You're very welcome. I hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

I'm actually afraid to listen to this one (but I will!). I used to have so much stuff, and most of it I've since sold off/etc. Sometimes it bums me out to think about it. Mostly since becoming a dad, but man, oh man, I wish I still had a lot of the stuff I used to, or at least a few choice picks. I used to have Panzer Dragoon Saga (got it when it was released, didn't hunt it down after...if that distinction means anything. I had the PC Engine Super CD version of Rondo of Blood. That's maybe enough. All in all, I used to have some good stuff. I could ramble on and on about it, but it'd just bum me out. Ha ha ha!

Richard Straceski

Gotta say I missed having questions from the listeners.

Jon Barnett

My god.. 2 hours?!?! do you guys hate each other by the end of taping these?

Joey Finelli

Duuuuuude can't wait to listen. Was really looking forward to this one. So happy its 2 hours long. Colin, you must know, we never hate these longer episodes. <3

Ian (616Entertainment)

I’ve been looking forward to this one! Thanks Colin and Dagan 👏🏻
