KnockBack, Episode 4: How Twilight Zone Inspired Our Love of Sci-Fi

There are few properties in nerdom Dagan and I love more than The Twilight Zone, the classic late '50s-early '60s television show that spawned generations of televised sci-fi, including the beloved Black Mirror. Today's episode starts with the Twilight Zone, but it doesn't end there. Instead, we walk you through our favorite episodes of the show before pivoting to other fiction -- from Ray Bradbury to JRR Tolkien (and much more) -- explaining how, why, and where we drew inspiration from some of modern history's greatest storytellers.

Very much so! Thanks :)

Ryan Harvey

Thank you for your kind words! I'm hoping you're still enjoying our shows nearly a year later.

Colin Moriarty

This episode was so fantastic! Your brother Dagan , as well as yourself are so inspirational. This episode was the impetus to not only replete after losing my job and getting another one, but I actually upped my pledge to the 10 dollar level because I love this content so much! It was also interesting to learn that Dagan also went to an art institute which I recently graduated from. He was nice enough to respond to me and answer some questions about how to land a job in the industry. So he has a very special place in my heart, and tour episodes have been fantastic!

Your Uncle Walter's going on and on... =) I hope you and your wife enjoy the series! Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

I loved the Uncle Walter reference. (He drove his chair in the cavalcade) Great episode too. Inspired to wife and I to watch the entire series.

Daniel Boyer

May be best to listen later, then. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I'm working hard!

Colin Moriarty

Ugh, I love the Twilight Zone but have, in all actuality, probably only seen 20 or so episodes. I want to listen to this episode so bad, but I also intend to go all the way through TZ throughout the year. Shit!

Ian (616Entertainment)

I was thinking of the song ‘Rip it up’ by Orange Juice. It reminded me of your speedy ascent back to prominence this year. Long may it continue!

Christian Doolan

Well, I hope you enjoy it if you choose to jump in!

Colin Moriarty

The Twilight Zone sounds really awesome! I don't have Netflix, but it appears to be at the library and on Amazon Prime. My experience/knowledge of it prior to this was reading that it was Leonardo DiCaprio's favorite TV show. That's it. :)

Megan Gierlach

Always my pleasure, bud. It thrills me to ‘follow my boys’! ❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

Thanks for listening, ma!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening. And we agree. Rod 4 Prez!

I really love these episodes. So nostalgic and reminds me of some of the great twilight zone stories. We sat around and watched them when i was a little kid.(and Alfred Hitchcock too. Crazy!) When you spoke about those awesome camera angles- oh yes! Made things so much creepier and sometimes scary as all get out! 😉👍🏻 Best! 😉❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

Great subject choice! I loved this show growing up in the 80's. New year's marathons on the local L.A. channel with my mom is a close memory of the show. Rod rules!

Joel Blair

Dude, that's so awesome. I'm so glad you're doing that, and being introduced to the wonders of The Twilight Zone for the first time. Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin, I'm having a blast with this considering I've never seen the series, it's just always been a large hole in my entertainment history something I just never sat and gave a shot. But I'm listening to you guys, hearing you say the name of the episode, then watching it, and then returning to hear you guys talk about it. I'm loving it thanks for reminding me and finally getting me to watch this show it's right up my alley and I'm an idiot for waiting this long. Appreciate you!

Kenneth thomas

That sounds nice, especially because that's more in line with what we were talking about with some of the "lighter" episodes of Twilight Zone that, while dark, are still airy and loose. That said, the anxiety Black Mirror gives me is completely unparalleled, and I fucking love it.

Colin Moriarty

See, that's what I'm talking about! You're gonna love it.

Colin Moriarty

I agree. The last episode was the one that stuck with me the most.

Jimmy Valentine

Electric Dreams is a great parallel and also a good break from Black Mirror. It is less depressing and dark than BM and does have a lighter overall feel despite the core of some of the subject matter still tackling some serious subject about the future, etc.

Tyler Goll

Let us know what you think of Electric Dreams Colin. I enjoyed it more than I expected to. Especially the last episode.

Jimmy Valentine

I hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Black Mirror definitely is this generation's Twilight Zone. Thing is, I was so shocked when I actually started watching it in like 2015 that it essentially IS The Twilight Zone. Nothing wrong with that at all, but I'm always so surprised when people say, "yeah, it's kinda like Twilight Zone." I'm like, no, it IS The Twilight Zone. That's why it's so good! Interestingly, Erin and I just saw the trailer for Electric Dreams. Looks cool, though super sci-fi. I'll check it out, obviously.

Colin Moriarty

Stopped at 7:31... I'll be back in a few days.

Kenny Gutzler

I was looking forward to this one! Excited to listen

John Quinn

I'm listening to the audio right now. I think Black Mirror is our generations Twilight Zone. The series is amazing. I agree wholeheartedly about Black Mirror. I'd recommend anyone who likes these types of shows watch Electric Dreams on Amazon. It has some very famous actors and is based on the short stories of Phillip K. Dick.
