Side Quest, Episode 15: Final Fantasy Tactics! Ninja Gaiden! Dead Space! The 10 Remasters/Remakes We Need

I've been hearing very good things about the Shadow remaster. I never even played the original until 2007, and I wasn't crazy about it, to be honest. I hear the controls are still a little archaic... it's definitely not high on my list as a result. But, hey... anything is possible. =)

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, and what a bunch of excellent games that bringes back memories. BTW Shadow of The Colossus is a speciel game, there is something about Its pureness thats unic. You only fight these giant Colossus boss fights and each of then are different. The controls could be a little wacky and it had some framerate issues, but imho it is still one of the great PS2 games. I have not tried the remake, but I hear it fixes some of the above mentions problems. You should try the remake Colin, if you find yourself in the right mood, mood is everything for while playing this game. I would love a remake of KOTOR 1 and 2, they are such good games. But maybe the thing I want the most is a Xenogears remake. The first disc is some of the best I have ever played, the storytelling depth in that game is on another lever, but sadly disc 2 is allmost broken, because they ran out of time and mooney during development. It might be the best flawed masterpeice in all of gaming.

Dragon Quest is definitely an acquired taste, but one you and I seem to share. It's grindy and obtuse and not really story-driven. But I fucking love playing them. Cannot wait for IX.

Colin Moriarty

The final fantasy and dragon quest collections are brilliant. I prefer dragon quest and would loose my mind if that would happen. I've been trying to get my friends to try dragon quest and that would be perfect it's such an underrated series that tends to live in final fantasy's shadow at least in the US. Great video as always have a good rest of the week!

Always, bud. Always. 😘❀️

Thanks for watching, ma!

Colin Moriarty

It's an incredibly special game. Glad you loved it as much as I did. I'm hearing great things about the Shadow remake, but that game never really struck a chord with me.

Colin Moriarty

So, when Sunsoft rereleased those games in the mid-to-late-'90s, I bought Legends and Legends III (for some reason), but not II. (I also bought Adventures). That said, I don't even think I could tell you the difference between Legends and Legends III.

Colin Moriarty

=) Thanks for watching!

Colin Moriarty

So brings me back to days of old. πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸ» I enjoyed this episode - a lot. Thanks , bud. 😘

I don't think this is the same one I remember, that must have been the 20th anniversary box or some such. This has 10-13 as well.

Oh man, I'd be all over that. You knowing several people who worked on it would give first hand experience to what it was like as everything was going on, from the development to the "guys, its not looking good," towards the downfall of 38 Studios. Daaaaamn. Could be similar to your IGN/Konami episode in that regard. I've Googled around and doesn't look like anyone has really done a huge feature on Amalur. Damn shame. Fingers crossed you've got time at some point in the future.

GREAT List! I remember playing Dead Space for the first time, lights out, borderline chain-smoking. In my opinion, perfect balance of action and horror: it gives you enough to keep going, but never enough to make you feel powerful. Also, Shadow of Colossus gave me hope that labor of love remakes like Super Mario All Stars and the Resident Evil Gamecube Remake (another contender for the Survival Horror Throne for me) can still happen today in a very base coat, remaster-saturated gaming space.

Justin Matkowski

Hey Colin, just finished the video and the talk of Final Fantasy remasters makes me remember one of my favorites, Final Fantasy Legend II (Saga2) , for Gameboy. Did you ever play that one or any of the FF Legend games? If so what did you think?

Stefan Catinella

Great video. I love the list you made at IGN awhile back of your best games in 2014. Many were reflected on here. Always anticipating the content, thanks Colin. β€œGive a Phoenix Down to Final Fantasy Tactics!” - CM

Jonah Gespacho

I've not seen this Final Fantasy Collection. Can you point me in the right direction? I and II, IV and CT, and V and VI were all released together, I know (I have all three collections).

Colin Moriarty

After the recent Direct, I think Nintendo might be a little worried about having too many ports and rereleases. I feel like Switch's trajectory may slow down because there's just not that much coming (and Smash didn't sell Wii Us, so I don't see why it would necessarily sell Switches). We shall see!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! Coincidentally, fan-chosen topics usually don't perform that well, but I love delivering the content, because I know it's what you guys here on Patreon are looking for, and so that makes me happy. Also, Amalur rules. I know a few people that worked on it. Maybe an episode in the future could be fun.

Colin Moriarty

Not too many years ago, Final fantasy 1-9 were released on Playstation in a collection... In Japan. Second the Castlevania SOTN style games and Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest 9 is the one, paradoxically, that is most in need of a remake. Really looking forward to DQ11. All 3 resistance games are great, but Insomniac swore off it after 3 wasn't great on sales. Maybe Bluepoint or Vicarious Visions could do something good with it. Of course, they'd probably end up being done by Idol Minds or Iron Galaxy again.

With all the remasters that Nintendo has been putting out on the Switch, I still cannot fathom how Melee has not received an upgrade. Especially when you consider its relevance in the tournament scene, I cannot understand how Nintendo doesn't seem to be interested. I mean it is sort of embarrassing to see Smash at EVO with players still using CRT displays.

ToastIX

Coming into this episode, my honest thoughts were "shit, why did that topic have to win?" You even stated in the beginning that remasters aren't usually your favorite subject, but god dammit, the episode turned out awesome. Great work, Colin, and thank you for steering me in the direction of that long-play database, that will be very useful for a few projects I'm going to be working on soon. I'm in the middle of getting the Kingdoms of Amalur Platinum, and goodness gracious would I love a sequel/up-res, which obviously cannot and will not ever happen. The rise and fall of Amalur was my pitch for the next SQ topic, and its doing well, but it won't win. I'd love to hear you cover it someday. Especially because its one of my top 10 of all time, and it was you who let me know of its excellence.

Ian (616Entertainment)

I know you mentioned in the podcast with Erin that the early days of Patron was so high cause everyone had you in their corner, and then as time goes on I think it's normalizing...but you don't know what it will normalize out to. So I hope when things are constant, they can make a return. We're of a similar age, Onimusha 4 (which I actually wasn't a big fan of, but I don't remember why...lot of repeating dungeons?) came out in my first year of Univeristy. BTW small plug, I'm happy to be on the podcast in the future, I run www.torontogamedevs.com which is a gaming site focused on the scene in Toronto Canada :) "Miss 100% shots you don't take". Thanks for chatting with me here. Keep up the great work.

Stephen Crane

Yeah, Onimusha has been left for dead, which hurts. The fourth one was great, but that came out when I was in college! Yeah, the historical and political videos are on indefinite hiatus. They don't perform well and they don't bring in Patrons. It hurts when I see people missing them, because I miss them too, but I can't help but also think, "well, people should have watched them!" So, we'll see what the future holds.

Colin Moriarty

haha, all good, special shoutout on the next video then :P - Onimusha is for sure on my list. A lot of these games have gotten at least some sort of sequel, spinoff, or something to continue the franchise (even the terrible, but easy platinum, Resistence on Vita), but Onimusha is just left in no man's land :( Solid video either way, looking forward to the return of the history ones though (which you've told me before don't perform that well?)

Stephen Crane

I gotta level with you: I didn't realize I left it out until the video was done. =)

Colin Moriarty

Well, get playing then, Will!

Colin Moriarty

Bro...no Onimusha? :(

Stephen Crane

This video was great! It’s funny, all of the games you listed in the video are games I have never played, except for dead space. Dead space is truly one of the scariest games I have ever played. They nailed the environments in that game.

Will Hahn

That's awesome. I don't even track that kind of stuff, so I didn't realize. Look at you!

Colin Moriarty

The* not there

Jon Barnett

My topics won elections in CLS Prime and CLS Side Quest. So all I need to do is win a KnockBack Election and I'll be there CLS Grand Champion!

Jon Barnett

Yeah, I mean, I think Square Enix was originally open about giving the III/IV treatment to V and VI, but I guess sales didn't justify it.

Colin Moriarty

Fun Story: The original .hack game (in '03, I believe) came out, and I was supposed to write the guide for it for IGN. It was the only game I was ever given to write about that I literally sent back. Way too big, way too much shit in it, couldn't do it. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, those are some deep cuts. =) Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I wish for a Final Fantasy 6 remake, just seeing narshe in 3D on youtube make me wish for it even more. It was rumored that Matrix Software (developers of FF3/FF4 for DS) would continue the 3D remakes on 3DS with FF5 and FF6 but Square decided Matrix software would port them to iOS instead, too bad.

Philip Andersen

the .hack game series would be awesome to revisit again.

Joey Finelli

I would love a Red Dead Redemption remaster and a Infamous collection remaster for sure but I always find myself wanting remasters for games that no one even remembers or cares about. I would love a ps2 classic of Predator Concrete Jungle for ps4 and I would love a remaster of Shadows of the Damned and I'm sure when the next generation of consoles are out at some point I will want a Call of Duty Ghosts remaster. Told you they were games nobody cares about. Great video Colin πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ.

Cameron Paterson

I agree. I'd really love an excuse to play Infamous and Infamous 2 again, in particular. Really loved those games.

Colin Moriarty

I agree. It's something worth revisiting. With Guerrilla seemingly moving on to Horizon 2 as a team, there's a gap for an exclusive shooter (although I think Killzone will be back eventually). Resistance 4 could fill the void.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words. Dead Space really is refined. That's a nice way of putting it. And it came out at a really dire time for survival horror, years before The Evil Within, Outlast, Soma, Resident Evil 7, etc. tried to bring it back to prominence. It was NEEDED when it came out.

Colin Moriarty

I'd really like to see the big three of kill zone, resistance, and infamous brought to the ps4. I feel like those series are true playstation essentials like Uncharted or the PS2 GTA Trilogy and should always be out there for people who missed that generation or maybe even just found their love for the console through those games to grab on whatever generation is current. Although they'll solve that problem easy if the next console is backwards compatible to ps3 or god willing ps2.

Chad Lewis

Resistance is a much needed remaster/remake. With the likes of wolfenstein popularizing alternative ww2, it would have a good chance of finding a new audience.

Chris B

Great picks Colin! Dead Space particularly has a special place in my heart and I make an effort to replay the trilogy every year during October/Halloween. It's a damn shame EA just couldn't be ok with this being a niche franchise and kept trying to appeal to broader audience with each entry because I really agree that Dead Space 1 is the best survival horror entry to date. Not to take anything away from games like RE1 & 2, Silent Hill 1&2, etc but Dead Space seemed to refine most of the aspects that made those games so great. Unfortunately as long as EA has the rights to the franchise, I'm not sure if this well return any time soon. Thank god for Xbox backwards compatibility as all 3 DS entries are supported. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and keep up the great work!
