KnockBack, Episode 5: We Love G.I. Joe (and Other '80s Toy Talk)

From 1982 through 1994, G.I. Joe took the toy world by storm, introducing an extensive line of action figures, a never-ending comic book run, multiple TV series (and a full-length movie), and much more into the lives of kids the world over. It just so happens that Dagan and I share a deep affinity for all things G.I. Joe, and wanted to dedicate an episode of KnockBack not only to the Joe toys, comics, and cartoons (and our many memories surrounding it all), but to other '80s toys that dominated our lives.

I still gotta do it!

Colin Moriarty

I know the name, but I'm not sure I know the toys. Need to look into it!

Colin Moriarty

Still haven't seen it.

Colin Moriarty

See, I couldn't imagine watching the show without wanting to obsessively go to the toy store.

Colin Moriarty

This episode was fantastic and really rekindled my love for G.I. Joe. Might have to go get a Cobra tattoo.

Haydyn

Great episode - very nostalgic. I'm a few years older than Dagen, so slightly ahead of GI Joe. Our favorite action figures were Micronauts which were a bit outside of the mainstream. I think we found them in a store that featured Japanese toys. It was so thrilling to discover a new and unique thing like these toys back then. Our (hello Nora and Erik wherever you are) play style was similar to Dagen's - we would devolope a plot (complete with storyboards) and act it out.

Blade Runner 2049 was really really good. Its an example when going back to old ideas is great but for every 2049 we get a Total Recall.

I wasn't much of a GI Joe collector, but I did watch the show. Mostly collected Transformers and MASK toys. Always wish I could have gotten Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future toys, but they were always too expensive.

Kaz Redclaw

I'm so glad the show is tickling those positive memories. =)

Colin Moriarty

What a brilliant listen!! Although I never had GI Joe, your chat brought back the memories of epic play sessions with Turtles, M.A.S.K, WWF wrestlers, Ghostbusters and Rambo figures in the late 80's and 90's

Tony Colton

I'll give Tommy thousands if he wanted. Hahaha.

Colin Moriarty

Oh man. =\ It was Shipwreck, though, so it's okay.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for listening! It would be hilarious if we played with our toys.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much for listening! I'm glad it accompanied you during the doldrums of cleaning.

Colin Moriarty

If only we knew better. I lost lots of thumbs and pelvises due to shitty play. =D

Colin Moriarty

Hope we get an update on Tommy and his mint on card collection! Also, Range Viper is best.

Mikey 12

Really great show again dude! Across the pond we had the Action Force figures by Palitoy with the straight arms and legs, exactly like Star Wars. It wasn’t until later I got my 1st figure and can remember sitting in a bus shelter with my Mother and holding him. I broke his crotch before I even got home. Damn you, Shipwreck!

Christian Doolan

This is another great episode from you two. Im sorry it took me so long to listen, well done! Have you thought of doing a live version with video on twitch? Maybe with props? <3

Was finally able to give this one a listen today as I cleaned the house. Holy shit, this is up there for my favorite episode yet. I cannot stress enough how great it is to hear you talking about things you love with a cohost you're perfect with. Its amazing that Dagan is a new podcaster, because he's really good at it. Like the retro collecting episode, I know for a fact I'll be listening to this one again in the not so distant future. Loved it!

I was born in 85, brother was born in 87. Lots of shared views.... I laughed, playing for 8 hours was normal.... and "setting up" the men and bases always took about an hour. I regret doing the "spinning punch" as we called it ---- this was where you spun the figures are the waist and let the rubberband do work. Unfortunately, there were way too many casualties that resulted in figures breaking at the waist.

Kenny Gutzler

What an awesome story. Bravo! Let us know how he responds. =)

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad our show gave you a few chuckles! I hope you have a great weekend, too.

Colin Moriarty

!!!!!!!

This epsiode sent me through a wave of emotions man! My little brother was a big GI Joe fan. He had a ton of the 12 inch joes. The infamous story was one day my father thought it would be a great idea to test out a parachute on one of the joes. He took my brothers absolute favorite joe, geared him up, and sent it!.... right into a tree in the back yard. My Dad passed away shortly after very unexpectedly and it is one of those great stories that always comes up when people talk about him. We never got that poor Joe back either. But thanks to you and Dagan I was able to use Yojoe.com and figure out which one my dad lost all those years ago and now 02 Dusty is on his way home to surprise my brother! Colin man you have no idea the impact just a little podcast like this can have on all sorts of people. Thank you.

Chad Lewis

Yo joe!!!!!!!!!!!

Christopher Hopkins

This episode made me laugh so many times because you both are such nerds, which is awesome! Lol. I had a few G.I. Joe toys when I was a kid, but I think they were the cheap ones you mentioned. Anyways, have a great weekend! Keep on being nerdy!

Colin Moriarty

Such fun! Thanks for ‘Bringing me back’ . ❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

The vehicles were great, but I was so much more drawn to the figures themselves.

Colin Moriarty

BTW the Cobra Sea Ray was so frickin cool...felt like the coolest kid ever to have that haha. All the vehicles were awesome....

Jeremy Cochran

You're kindred with Dagan, in that case!

Colin Moriarty

I'm so glad you liked it! =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much. That's incredibly high praise, and I appreciate it.

Colin Moriarty

Colin I have listened to you for years...I feel like I have grown up with you like some many others. I starting to feel like CLS Knockback is your finest hour yet...well done sir!!

Matthew Ward

Such an awesome episode....hit me in the feels, I was obsessed as well lol. Croc Master FTW!! :-)

Jeremy Cochran

Used to love them as a kid, although in the UK they were called “Action Force”. Snake Eyes being my favourite !

John Bury

If you ever find that mountain, let me know. =)

Colin Moriarty

The best! Hope you enjoy the episode. =)

Colin Moriarty

Cobraaaaaaa! Lol Use to have a ton of GI Joe's when i was a kid.... watched the cartoon and movie all time when I was younger as well...

Nic

I had an instant flashback just reading the title of the mountain of GI Joes I had growing up haha.
