KnockBack, Episode 10: '80s Nickelodeon
Added 2018-04-19 16:01:00 +0000 UTCIn the pre-Internet days, few things distracted children as much as Nickelodeon, one of the earliest and most successful cable television channels ever created. With humble origins in the late '70s (when it was known as Pinwheel), Nickelodeon hit its stride during the Reagan Administration and never looked back. Today's episode of KnockBack is dedicated to Nickelodeon during the '80s; Dagan and I spend nearly two hours breaking down some of our favorite shows, and have more than a few laughs as we reminisce about those simpler times.

2019-01-08 23:18:25 +0000 UTCWay late on this one but talking about David the Gnome got me. That was my favorite thing every morning as a kid. I actually rewatched the series as an adult when I caught a bad cold one time because it’s comforting to me. Loved that feeling but the finale is noteworthy. I hadn’t seen the last episode as a kid and that’s great. As a grown ass man it ruined me for days. David and Lisa wake up one day with a back ache and feel tired and basically “Well, it’s time to die.” They say goodbye to everyone, travel with Swift to a mountain, cry for 10 minutes while saying how much they love each other, then turn into trees and die. Its theme of life and the interdependency of community and ecosystems is solid through the series and death is a natural thing so it makes sense that they’d address it. But it’s incredibly sad and then that’s it. It was the saddest thing I’d ever seen in almost any entertainment medium and it was in one of my favorite kids cartoon.

2018-05-02 23:40:32 +0000 UTCOH MY GOODNESS. Just listened to this episode on my way to work this morning. (I have a long commute and listen at 1.5x) This one really hit me in the nostalgia nerve big time. Mysterious Cities of Gold? HELL. YES. When I was a kid, I had a fake gold metal coin that I stuffed into a keyring and hung from a string around my neck to make my version of the medallions they had. I too, remember "Spartacus, and the Sun Beneath the Sea." Like Cities, it also had an end... a REALLY WEIRD end. It's burned into my head. Something about some gauntlets he had that he picked up a slab of something and flung into the titular sun. I could go on and on, but know that this was by far my favorite episode of KnockBack thus far. Great job guys!

Nickelodeon was so great back in the day, no idea what it's like now. Other shows that really were my jam were All That, and other fun stuff on Snick (that Saturday night Nick life!!!) haha. What a fun episode guys, thanks for this. :)

As a kid born in the 90's i loved watching GSN with my mom, my favorite shows were, match game, cardsharks, old family feud and honorable mention not on GSN but a great game show, super market sweep. You guys should do a Episode about old game shows, I could hear the passion coming from both of you.

2018-04-23 17:05:01 +0000 UTCColin, in regards to the question you asked Dagan about Sesame Street’s curriculum working, there is an EXCELLENT book about the history of Sesame Street that delves into the history and how it was an experiment to try and educate underprivileged preschoolers who couldn’t afford to be sent to school yet called Street Gang. You should check it out.

There was so much of my childhood in these shows. Artie was awesome, and you were right the band that did the theme song for Pete and Pete was Polaris. I think the song was called "Hey Sandy." Keep up the great work!
