Side Quest, Episode 24: Detroit Review

Don't become too human.

Hahaha, I see!

Colin Moriarty

I agree. Heavy Rain is the superior game.

Colin Moriarty

I just got through the Marcus junkyard scene. Finding and installing a new right leg felt cathartic 😂

Marc Boggio

I feel Heavy Rain is but Beyond is not that great.

Anthony Stewart

I hope you like it, too!

Colin Moriarty

I can't wait for it to be delivered!!! Been optimistic about this game and glad to hear you liked it.

Anthony Stewart

Heavy Rain and Beyond are both on PS4, if you're interested in going back. Thank you for reading!

Colin Moriarty

Play it!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah. So far, it's the game to beat for me.

Colin Moriarty

I mean, if you hated Heavy Rain, you definitely won't like Detroit.

Colin Moriarty

Trophies are good. I got 45%, and couldn't even see 'em (as they're all hidden AND they weren't live on the server when I was playing).

Colin Moriarty

I've never picked up a Quantic Dream title before (had a 360 last gen) but your review has made me decide to make Detroit my first. This and Deus Ex Mankind Divided will make for a much-needed, sci-fi palette cleanser for when I finally finish The Witcher 3 (when I am too old to control my bowels or feed myself...) Great review!

Justin Matkowski

Great. Love reading and hearing in depth reviews rather than a score. So CLS peeps do you guys recommends beyond human? I heard it was medicore at best compared to heavy rain which i loved

Erik Castillo

Wow! I've never played a Quantic Dream game but I will definitely be starting with this one. To say it's your favourite game of the year is incredibly high praise in the shadow of Celeste, Monster Hunter World and God of War.

Phillip Guglielmo

Enjoyed the video. To be honest I am not gonna play this game. I hated Heavy Rain and didn't enjoy the Detroit demo. I like walking simulators, having choice, all of that type of interaction. But I think it should be of a good standard and I don't think Cage is good with actors or dialogue. I just find his attempts shallow and cringeworthy. So even though I am fascinated by AI and like story-led games, this one I will avoid.

Peter Campbell

I’m loving the recent return to reviews! I’ve been on a media blackout for this game, but broke it to listen to your review. I do have one question though. How’s the trophy list?

Matt Matlock

Good choice. Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

I started Bloodstained last night on Switch, too (that's the only platform other than PC Inti had codes for). Gonna segue to PS4/Vita today. And yeah, me not being on screen is gonna be a thing moving forward. Not always, but usually. FWIW: The Detroit review probably took ~2 fewer hours to produce.

Colin Moriarty

Ended up pre-ordering this last night (mainly to get a copy of Heavy Rain with it). So glad to hear this game nails the premise and my pre-order wasn't a bad decision!

Korey Burns

Really excited to check Detroit out, whenever I finish the few games I have running right now. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon just finished downloading on my Switch and that's another must. Excellent review, Colin. I minimized the window and took in 0 of the video capture, just listened to your review, and I'm more excited now than I was before. It was refreshing to hear someone say "I wasn't expecting much from this game," where I feel most major outlets are becoming more and more shy in regards to anything that could be considered close to a negative feeling on a game, even if its just an honest thought before you've ever actually played it. This game is definitely on my to-do list. Also, I noticed that you're not on screen at all in this one. Most Patrons voted that they wouldn't mind if you didn't appear at all, and I took this as a possible sign of things to come.

Ian (616Entertainment)

Thank you! The social commentary and parallels are super important to the story.

Colin Moriarty

Detroit's a great game to play with someone else. I played the first eight chapters with Erin, but then she stopped watching because she wanted to play for herself.

Colin Moriarty

It's certainly not going to be a game for everyone, but if you're a Quantic Dream fan, or simply a fan of storytelling in games, then I can't imagine you're not gonna at least like Detroit.

Colin Moriarty

I'm happy to hear that. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I hope you like it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! Enjoy the game.

Colin Moriarty

I did! And Heavy Rain has been in my mind, too, since Erin's been playing it.

Colin Moriarty

Lots of people use it pejoratively, which is why I qualified my thoughts in the review. I use it like you do, but most people don't.

Colin Moriarty

I hope you like it as much as I did!

Colin Moriarty

Beyond, to me, felt unbalanced, chaotic, strange. I know they fixed one of my biggest gripes with the PS4 version -- the out-of-order storytelling -- so I may go back one day.

Colin Moriarty

They've having a great year.

Colin Moriarty

I'm readying myself for the E3 rush. =D

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I hear you. It's totally absurd. First of all, that assumes they even know what David Cage has experienced in his life, and even then, why can't he tell the story he wants to tell?

Colin Moriarty

Fantastic review, Colin! I can’t wait to get my hands on this game. The social commentary sounds so interesting!

Will Hahn

Interested in seeing your take. I’ve seen the game getting mediocre reviews, but I’ll more than happily take your word for it. I mean.. I would’ve never played the original Ni No Kuni if not for you. Excited to play!

Craig Carter

Great video it gave me everything I wanted to know.

Michael Gonzales

Awesome review.... Excited to jump in over the weekend.

Brian Dewire

Great review, Colin. Honestly super excited to get into this one even more now!

Kyle Stephenson

Wow you like it more than Heavy Rain. That's awesome. Cant wait to play.

walter pocasangre

Do people think "walking simulator" is a bad term? I use it regularly to describe some of my favorite games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Life is Strange, and Heavy Rain. I guess the term could turn some people off.

Owen

Already pre-ordered it and picking it up tomorrow after work. I loved Heavy Rain and thought that Beyond: Two Souls was decent. I especially liked the PS4 version where they give you a choice to play chronologically instead of jumping around in the timeline. The whole idea of the end that Aiden was actually her dead stillborn twin brother and not a random spirit really pulled it together for me in the end.

Alex Ball

Great video! Exited for Detroit: Become Human. I'm playing Beyond Two Souls right now, and I'm really enjoying it. What was it you didn't like (No Spoilers) about the game?

Marcus Brown

I’m glad we share similar opinions! This game had me thinking about the world even when I wasn’t playing it. Sony is on a roll. Can’t believe Spider-Man is only a few months away now.

Brett Medlock

Great insight, thanks Colin. Heavy Rain was a good story that I thought was weighed down by the play mechanics and some very clunky voice acting at times. I didn't play Beyond but watched a full play through and thought it was enjoyable. Very interested to play through this one, I expect I will find it the best of the three as you did. Can't wait for the E3 videos!

Bryan Finck

Great review, Colin!

Mike Chandler

Great review dude. I'm not really a fan of these games in general, but it's nice to know they knocked this one out of the park. You don't have to answer, but I remember a lot of outlets a few months back were bordering on disrespectful in regards to certain themes touched on in preview builds - specifically the abusive father. They claimed - borderline mockingly - that David Cage was not the guy to be able to handle such sensitive issues - thoughts? It didn't sit well with me then, I really hope it's unfounded - if only to feel a little vindication on Cage's behalf (as dumb as that sounds).
