Patreon-Exclusive Fireside Chat (May, 2018): The Renaissance Man

In 2004, I was lucky enough to meet Mark Ryan Sallee. At the time, Mark Ryan was an associate-level editor at IGN, and he and I quickly became friends. When I was an intern at IGN in 2004, he let me sleep on the floor of his studio apartment, and he was the person who hired me at IGN full time when I graduated college in 2007. We've been close for a long time, and so I wanted to invite him on the show to not only talk about our past, but to talk about Mark Ryan specifically. He's a modern-day renaissance man with a bunch of varied interests -- from tech and MMA to photography and motorcycles -- and our conversation touches on all of that (plus more). I suspect you'll find Mark Ryan as fascinating and endearing as I do.

There's definitely a facade of nerdiness everywhere, but I agree, depth is probably still a little more difficult to find.

that would actually be a fantastic topic for discussion - when nerd culture became mainstream, how, and in what ways that's a good and a bad thing. I definitely became mostly resentful of it in the last 5-8 years. it gets increasingly more difficult to find people (offline, as well as online) who get nerdy beyond the surface level.

Thank you so much!

What a fantastic episode. Nothing better than listening to something like this and relaxing on my couch! :)

Yeah, when you and dad left me in SF after I got hired, you dropped me off at the movie theater so I could meet up with him and see Transformers.

Big Bang Theory: The absolute worst.

What a great show! This was awesome. I can't stand Big Bang Theory lol my favorite T.V. show is Friends. Seinfeld is definitely top 5

Oh man... Mark Ryan is such a wonderful guy! Great episode. I remember how really patient he was with me when you slept on his floor that summer. He would answer my emails... he said he’d look after you and he absolutely did that. And if I recall- when you moved to San Francisco - he was the one to welcome you that time too. We left you at the movie theater with him the night before we flew back east. 😒 I’ll always thank him and appreciate him for his kindness. πŸ’ž
