CLS: A Week in Review (June 08, 2018)
Added 2018-06-08 22:00:00 +0000 UTCHey Crew,
I hope this week's review post finds you well.
The biggest thing I have to talk about in this week's wrap-up is E3. It's right around the corner, and I'm planning some big stuff. I originally told you I'd do five videos. I'm actually leaning, now, towards doing six. Here's what you need to know, though: As long as the conferences are interesting, a new E3 Conference Review video will go live at 9a PT every day from Sunday, June 10 through Friday, June 15th. I'm aiming for Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, and Bethesda. Square-Enix is also doing a conference. If there's is more interesting than another's, I'll switch 'em in. Episodes will be around 10-12 minutes long, and I think you're gonna enjoy them. At least, that's my hope.
Also, as you may have seen, Episode 63 of CLS Prime -- all about D-Day -- went live earlier this week. I promised you I'd bring it back bigger and better than ever, and I think I did. I also promised you that I'd look at the metrics, and I have. So, here are my preliminary thoughts:
The show did poorly. It's en route to be one of the worst-trafficked episodes of CLS Prime to date, not a great sign, considering I had it professionally edited, and considering it was about a timely topic (it was literally released on D-Day). It attracted some Patreon support, but not much. In short: It's probably not worth my time to do more episodes.
But I don't think it's that clear-cut, and here's why: The people that did watch it loved it. It has an extraordinary amount of "thumbs up" on YouTube, considering how few people watched it, comparatively. It's gotten really wonderful feedback. And so, even though the numbers are soft and the support isn't really there, I'm not giving up on the show. Expect a new episode of CLS Prime in August or September.
Thank you for showing your enthusiasm for my brand's original show. It really does mean a great deal to me. And I'd say it paid off, because we're not saying die yet.
But enough chatter. How about some content?
Here are this week’s new shows!
CLS Prime, Episode 63: How D-Day Saved Europe (Audio)
Side Quest, Episode 26: E3 "Predictions" and Strategies (Audio)
Fireside Chats, Episode 40: The Divisive Solo
KnockBack, Episode 17: The Indiana Jones Trilogy
Here are last week's shows, in case you missed any!
Side Quest, Episode 25: Bloodstained CotM Review (Audio)
Fireside Chats, Episode 39: Living With Tourette Syndrome
KnockBack, Episode 16: Final Fantasy IV
May, 2018's Q&A Video
Also, Did You...

Submit Your Topic Idea in the KnockBack Primary Election?
That's basically it! I'm gonna lay low for a day or two to conserve energy, because this upcoming week is gonna be one hell of a Workaholic's Paradise.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support! Talk to you soon. -Colin
P.S. As a reminder, Fireside Chats and KnockBack will go live next week, during the E3 Madness. That said, each episode will go live at noon PT instead of 9a PT, simply because I don't want postings to overlap with each other, and episodes of Side Quest will be going live alongside the podcasts this week. This shouldn't be much of an inconvenience, but I did want to let y'all know, in case there were any questions.

2018-06-10 19:06:27 +0000 UTCI think trying again is the right choice by both the brand and the fans. I'm glad you like Fireside Chats. I'm enjoying doing it. =)

2018-06-10 19:06:01 +0000 UTCHey Colin, I haven't watched the Prime show, ive been meaning to but just not had the time. Yes the numbers weren't great but if you enjoy doing them... Keep doing it! You in a rare posision where you can make all the decisions. I believe Prime is your soul food, keeps you going, stops you burning out on other content and helps the other shows look better and crisper. Anyway that's my thought on it. Keep it up. Niall

2018-06-10 00:43:55 +0000 UTCI really like both shows! If you make em, I'll watch em.
2018-06-09 23:14:35 +0000 UTCI am happy that despite the number of views you will continue with another CLS Prime video. Keep up the great work Colin. Also, I am really enjoying The Fireside Chats podcast. I like the idea of you chatting and then me listening to people who may not be famous but have a unique story to tell.

2018-06-09 22:21:42 +0000 UTCI renewed my Patreon pledge because of CLS prime putting up a new video. I hope you continue to upload more.

2018-06-09 13:29:46 +0000 UTCNaughty Dog is, on paper, a terrible company name. In 2018, Naughty Dog is synonymous with Uncharted and The Last of Us and its potentially ridiculous name is one now associated with industry defying quality, narrative benchmarks and unheard of hype for unreleased projects. The name is meaningless, the output is everything.
2018-06-09 02:56:13 +0000 UTCHey Joey, The way I see CLS as a brand is merely as an umbrella. I've told a few people this, but you've gotta look at it like any other brand, and I don't think people really give CLS the benefit of the doubt they give other names. Amazon once sold books. Now it sells everything. It owns Twitch, and offers you warranty services, and manufactures computer hardware, and on and on and on. Microsoft once sold software -- hence its name -- and now its largest divisions revolve around cloud computing and tablets. I mean, Apple got into the telephone and watch businesses, and the most open secret in Silicon Valley is that it's building a car. Closer to home, we founded Kinda Funny two years before we put our first piece of gaming content up. Now what is it best-known for? CLS is just a moniker, just an umbrella, just a company. What I'm really trying to wrap my head around these days is expanding it as a network of content far beyond me, where CLS -- like IGN today -- literally doesn't mean anything. So, I hope that explains not only why the name isn't changing, but also why it doesn't really need to. Thank you for your feedback!

2018-06-09 02:35:48 +0000 UTCHi Colin, I watched and really enjoyed the D-Day episode; the production quality definitely increased - I can tell the minute the intro was different. I’m going to go back and give it a well-deserved thumbs up. I understand that it didn’t draw much traffic and the ‘free market’ of the Internet will dictate what content you create, but I wonder if the original intent of CLS, or the name of the product itself, should be adjusted. This is from the outside looking in and purely subjective, but to me, the original CLS tent pole was historical and political content, and that was what your passion was (is still?). I’m guilty of being one of those that begged for video game content when 90% of CLS was the aforementioned content, but I feel that the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. Now, CLS is 50/40/10 with SQ/KB/Prime. Sorry for the ramble - it was just something I was pondering after listening to some content today.

2018-06-09 02:30:46 +0000 UTCI’m rooting for you, Colin. That being said, I’m yet to listen to the Indiana Jones KnockBack. If you highlight Temple of Doom as the trilogies best, I might have to magically remove your heart, though not before I’ve heard your inevitable Mad Men discussion. Being a CLS fan is complicated, man. Also, I’ve watched the Sopranos, I’ve seen what happens to Christopher’s. No thanks. I’m C -Dog.
2018-06-09 02:09:58 +0000 UTCThank you for your feedback, Christopher!

2018-06-09 01:41:52 +0000 UTCYour CLS prime vid popped up on my YouTube feed, sandwiched between a pair of D-Day videos that had 10 million views between them. I watched all 3 and yours had the best narrative by a clear distance but honestly the other videos had large sections of authentic video footage that even without a detailed narrative spoke a thousand words. On recent episodes of CLS Side Quest, you very rarely use still images, instead narrating your script over video footage, which, quite frankly, works better than still image slide shows. Obviously, the further back in history you go the harder it gets to create a visual narrative to accompany your scripts but D-Day? Honestly the use of still images in this episode lessoned my experience. You wrote a beautiful script, and in an ideal world we wouldn’t need a visual aid but here we are, impatient products of a digital age. I adore your content (literally just finished the Final Fantay KnockBack which required nothing more than the discussion it was afforded) but CLS prime needs to be the Saving Private Ryan of your content offerings. Everything else is almost note perfect. I hope this makes sense.
2018-06-09 01:34:23 +0000 UTCI loved the D-day CLS prime. I listened on podcast and will go to yt to give you a view and a thumbs up. I don't know if that factors into anything, but I love your political/history stuff and don't want you to think it isn't unnoticed.

2018-06-09 01:29:59 +0000 UTCSo pleased you're enjoying the content. Thank you for your kind words! To ever be in the same breath as Dan Carlin is, of course, a great honor.
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-09 00:20:18 +0000 UTCI could definitely see you doing something in the vein Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History some day. You’re a good storyteller who can take complex events and put them into perspectives that are accessible and enjoyable. But you certainly have enough on your plate already! It’s easy to see the hard work and TLC that’s going into your product. Loving all the content!

2018-06-09 00:09:53 +0000 UTCThank you! Well said.

2018-06-08 23:30:13 +0000 UTCInteresting point.
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-08 23:30:03 +0000 UTCYou are indeed in the minority (based on the metrics I've gathered over time, including in the recent survey I did here on Patreon), but you're certainly entitled to your opinion. People like you exist, those that prefer historical and political Colin over gaming Colin. If you don't think your money is being well-spent, I totally understand, and while it's sad to see you go, I thank you for supporting me with what you could, when you could.
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-08 23:29:52 +0000 UTCThanks! But it's not gonna be a video a month. I'll look into pushing one out in August. So it's more like every 2-3 months. Just wanted to be clear.
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-08 23:28:43 +0000 UTCI'm looking forward to delivering those thoughts!
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-08 23:28:19 +0000 UTCWell, I think that's possibly it, which is why I wanna give it another shot or two before really making a decision.
Colin Moriarty
2018-06-08 23:28:08 +0000 UTCI really liked the episode and here's my 2c... If your passionate and interested in covering topics for CLS prime then do it!! If the fire burns in your belly then regardless of views... Do it! Rome wasn't built in a day

2018-06-08 23:24:42 +0000 UTCJust a quick note, follow up, take this however you like, but of Christopher Nolans movies in the last 10 years Dunkirk had the lowest returns (adjusted for inflation). I don't think WW2 grabs viewers like it once did. Again, my opinion.
Jeshua Anderson
2018-06-08 22:52:03 +0000 UTCI know I'm in the minority here, but I am barely interested in your gaming or pop culture videos. No offense, but I have always liked listening to you since the beyond days, but not the games you played (for the most part). I have however loved your history videos. I have continued to support you here because I respect the shit of you. I am growing though to believe my $5 a month that I have contributed since day one is not being used wisely on my part. As you say Colin, vote with your wallet.
2018-06-08 22:43:36 +0000 UTCI am VERY happy you have decided to keep doing CLS for a few more months. I REALLY don't think the low views are due to general disinterest. I think its due to your channel being dormant for some time is one. It honestly came out of nowhere. 2nd while the DDay topic was enjoyable to me, i hate to say i don't think its a big viewers grabber sadly. I actually didn't even know it was the DDay anniversary until you said it. All that said, I REALLY think your on the right track with its higher quality, and longer run time. Also 1 video a month i feel is good because i know doing those really taxes you.
Jeshua Anderson
2018-06-08 22:42:13 +0000 UTCI can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all the different conferences! 😀

2018-06-08 22:04:54 +0000 UTCThe amount of views may not be killer for the CLS return, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the channel laying dormant for months and months? Maybe not, just s thought. Another thought, would having a certain dollar cap be good for Prime? Like hey guys, keep it over $____ and I’ll keep doing Prime episodes? That would tip your hand for how much you’re making, which isn’t really anyone’s business, but it’d make Prime incentive based. Just an idea!
