KnockBack, Episode 18: Seinfeld

Few (if any) television shows in history tickled our funny bones like Seinfeld. From 1989 until 1998, the demented stories of Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine captivated audiences with their absurdity, told with the assistance of incredible humor and world class writing. Today's KnockBack is dedicated to the amazing, spectacular, GOAT 180 episode run of Seinfeld, and focuses on the characters themselves. What makes the four protagonists tick? Why are their lives so insane? And how do they attract scores of crazy people into their worlds in nine years? Let's sit around our table at a digital Monk's and hash it out.

KnockBack, Episode 18: Seinfeld

Comments

Another great episode! I think it’s time to start another rewatch. I’d be really curious to hear Colin’s take on the recent Jerry Seinfeld kerfuffles. Is his statement about comedy being ruined accurate? Is the reaction to him, saying he was never funny and that Larry David was the brains behind the show a fair statement or is that salty cope? Keep it up!

Colin Moriarty

(Had to copy paste this comment in the Knockback episode too) Thought I'd spread the word.. a Lego Ideas project has reached 10,000 supporters for a 30th Anniversary Seinfeld set. Includes minifigures of Newman, Kramer, Jerry, George, and Elaine. Here's the URL. Share with your brother, Dagan.. Let's hope the Lego Board approves! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/763f0060-42c3-4329-9a39-d7dec10f72ce YouTube Trailer: https://youtu.be/Yxc_JT0Nl4s

Tony Rivera

LOL. I love George so much.

Colin Moriarty

That's awesome. Love that.

Colin Moriarty

I loved this episode. It's my favorite show also, having seen every episode dozens of times. It just felt great thinking about the show again, and I laughed out loud many times thinking about the scenes. I just looked up The Human Fund scene, and found these re-cut movie trailers using Seinfeld scenes. It's so good! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evAljjApeMg

dooboo

In high school football on the Offensive line we used shout Deloris to call a double team on one of the D linemen. Maybe a handful of linemen actually understood the reference. Ha!

Dan Sievers

Like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.

Colin Moriarty

I definitely didn't understand it. I remember not understanding The Master of His Domain until I was in college. But that's what's so brilliant about it. Layers!

Colin Moriarty

Wow, you've never seen it?! You're in for a treat, I'll tell you what...

Colin Moriarty

Nice Dagan, Marine Biologist was the first episode that popped in my head when thinking about my favorites. I specifically remember talking about that episode the next morning with my friends in elementary school. Woahhhh there big fella!

Kenneth thomas

I was born in 85’ and I was totally hooked on Seinfeld when it was on the air. Maybe I didn’t understand 100% of the comedy but enough of it I knew even at that age was right up my alley and grew up rewatching it and just appreciating it more and more. It’s crazy to think that i liked it so much at like 8 years old, goes to show you sometimes funny is just funny.

Kenneth thomas

Thank you, guys! I am going to watch the show now, because I have never seen it! I watched all the episodes of Friends, so I assume I will like this.

Megan Gierlach

Oh I most defiantly will.

Brandon Lahood

You should certainly give the show a go!

Colin Moriarty

There are probably 1,000 things I didn't mention, to be fair. Daunting episode to do, actually.

Colin Moriarty

It's amazing. There's so much texture to each episode.

Colin Moriarty

Both awesome shows, too!

Colin Moriarty

We are going to the Hamptons!

Colin Moriarty

I have never watched before but this pod cast has me really interested!

Brandon Lahood

Finally got a chance to listen to the episode, great stuff as usual. Seinfeld is one of my favorite of all time. BTW, I can’t believe you guys did not scream “vandelay industries”. 😂

JayLou83

I always recalled Elaine yelling “STELLA!” at the top of her lungs and making that hand gesture, but couldn’t remember why. I re-watched the entire series last year and seeing that her actions were the result of pain meds made so much sense. The couch bed- ha!

Jose Garcia

I'm looking forward to listening to this... I grew up watching Seinfeld with my parents when I was young and love it to this day.... (not the most child friendly show lol) I love Comedians in Cars getting Coffee and Curb as well. :)

Andrew

I listened to this over the last few days while working and cleaning, and just like Seinfeld, I know I’m going to listen to this one again. I love the little details you guys pull out, especially, “...do you have your bathing suits?” - “ITS MARCH.” Hahahaha. Seinfeld was my dad’s favorite show, so I saw it every day and even watched as it was airing. I’m so grateful that I was born in 1990, what a great era for fucking everything. Side note, I cried when Seinfeld ended, and I told my dad through the tears, “I should’ve watched more Seinfeld with you while I had the chance.” ...I was 7 and didn’t understand reruns, Hahaha. Loved it, guys!

Ian (616Entertainment)

Not everything can be for everyone!

Colin Moriarty

Never liked Seinfeild

Kc Wright

Dagan sure does love that one. =)

Colin Moriarty

There are other Seinfeld podcasts that do that way better than we could, I'd say. Thank you for your kind words, though! So pleased you enjoyed the episode.

Colin Moriarty

Finally getting a chance to listen to them talk about my favorite show and I'm so happy they talked about the Marine Biologist episode hahaha That's my favorite episode and that ending speech...it's a hole in one

Fred Bence

Great, perhaps greatest knockback! I'd love if you did a Season-by-Season version! Maybe a 3-3-3 pairing spread out over time, but recorded over one actual long form conversation? Perhaps I am too greedy! Thanks!

Nevin Wisnoski

I always wanted to get the DVDs (the Blurays, now, I guess) just to have the "Notes About Nothing," which I found fascinating.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support, and for your kind words! I appreciate it. Seinfeld forever. =D

Colin Moriarty

Really enjoyed this episode. I have all of the seasons on DVD. I don't think I have a favourite episode but Elaine dancing, Kramer's assistant and Jerry doing the werewolf bit when he shaved too far were late-era highlights, as well as the wonderful backwards episode. I could easily go on. I could go on but will finish with "Are you sponge-worthy?"

Peter Campbell

Mate, I’ve always respected your opinions above all others with regard to video games, and have felt a kindred stance in them... but that you also have this love for Seinfeld... wow! Proud to be a supporter of yours Colin. P.S your E3 content was fantastic btw.

Manny M

Hopefully, this episode turned some people onto its greatness!

Colin Moriarty

I wonder how many people who listen actually know what the show is? Cause like you said their are people who never seen Seinfeld so it would be interesting but I'm sure a great episode nonetheless.

Marcus Brown

Thank you for your kind words! An I Love Lucy episode would be awesome to do.

Colin Moriarty

I think most people consider Seinfeld the better show, but I'm not sure I agree.

Colin Moriarty

Wow! What a episode. This was a nice trip down memory lane of a Iconic show by huge fans like you guys. I was introduced to this and Friends at around 5 or 6. I would watch them with my mom all the time and Friends is my favorite of all time. But Seinfeld will always be a trail blazer for future sitcoms. Great Show and also I love Lucy is great and at My age i should not know what that is hahaha. Love ya🤙

Marcus Brown

I’ve never seen sienfield, but I loved curb. Is Seinfeld considered the better show? Or is curb superior?

Brandon harris

Glad you enjoyed the episode! Now get watchin'. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening, ma!

Colin Moriarty

That's a great episode. It's emblematic of those later years' insanity.

Colin Moriarty

Ok... Ok ok.. I get the message loud and clear. I started watching the show last night because of this episode. Haha. I had seen a handful of episodes cause my brother watched it from beginning to end for the first time a couple years ago and I always liked it but this conversation convinced me. Really great episode, Guys!!!

Alex Gates

This episode of Knock Back made me actually laugh out loud- just remembering specific Seinfeld shows episodes through your chat. I need to get back to them - such crazy, funny stuff. Nicely done! 👏🏻❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

Great episode Colin. My favorite episode is easy The Merv Griffin Show. In that one episode you have Kramer who turns his apartment into the Merv Griffin set and interviews everybody. Jerry is dating the woman with all the cool vintage toys that she won’t let him play with. Elaine has the sidle guy at work who she puts tic tacs in his pocket so she can here him. Then you have George with running over the pigeons. So many storylines in one episode.

Alex Ball

He rules.

Colin Moriarty

I think Crazy Joe Davola is my favorite side character. The random appearances were always hilarious.

Nicholas Swanson

It's a great reference!

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

CLS Seinfeld episode posts. Me - I think it moved

Joe Barry

So many people say "we live in a society" as a meme and have no clue that it originated from Costanza

Nicholas Swanson

Yeah, Dagan adores that episode.

Colin Moriarty

Hahahaha.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you thought we did it justice. It was a fun chat.

Colin Moriarty

We don't get too deep into it, though we discuss it, I believe.

Colin Moriarty

Have fun!

Colin Moriarty

I'm so glad to hear that. =D

Colin Moriarty

Please enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

I've said before in conversation that if aliens ever came to earth and we wanted to show them the best example of comedy we could, I'd use The Marine Biologist. Timing, irony... it's got it all. So glad Dagan brought it up. "Hole in one, huh?!?!"

Phil Crone

Raincoat arch is my favorite. "You burned them? Those clothes are not yours to burn."

Joey Finelli

"He's a male bimbo... he's a Mimbo!"

Erik Peterson

if i could post gifs on here there would be so many dancing gifs rn

Erik Peterson

Seinfeld is my favorite show and this KnockBack certainly did it justice. Now I want to marathon it.

desperateLuck

Im hype for this. Really interested to hear your guys’ opinion on the finale

Michael Lepre

Yes! So pumped for this one :D

Jon Cordeiro

Yesssss! This is the one I've been waiting for! Thanks guys! Seinfeld is a treasure, cant wait to listen!
