Added 2018-06-21 16:00:59 +0000 UTCWhile there are a number of amazing '80s teen movies we could easily swoon over, John Hughes' 1985 classic The Breakfast Club is the most quintessentially '80s of 'em all. It's strange that a straight-forward movie about five students serving Saturday detention together could become such a powerful and beloved calling card of a place and time, and yet, The Breakfast Club remains a beacon to Gen X-ers (and their kids) to this day. So let's spend some time talking about the Brain, the Athlete, the Basketcase, the Princess, and the Criminal, shall we?

Damn, Colin, I can’t wait for this high school episode now. My favorite part of this was when you were telling stories from the past. 2018-06-22 15:56:55 +0000 UTCThis was a real treat for me. As a child of the 80's, this movie has always been pretty important. It's pretty reflective of what school felt like in those days. It's kind of bittersweet really, because I was Brian in school, maybe a tiny bit of Allison, but definitely Brian. I understand every feeling and question he has intimately. I look back on the time fondly somehow even though it was full of pain for me. It's weird how that stuff never goes away. You grow and change and mature, but to this day, even though I'm 6'1", 190 lbs. I still feel like that little meek, mousey nerd who is simultaneously invisible and targeted. Anyway, it was an important movie for me because it felt like someone understood what it was like to be a nerd in the 80's, and I couldn't find much understanding in those days. Hell, it's hard to find sometimes even now. I was told the other day that the "Oppressed White Male Nerd" was a myth, and that the things I went through never happened and if they did they were nothing compared to what other "oppressed" people went through. Felt plenty real to me. Thank you Colin and Dagan for taking a deep dive on a film near and dear to my heart. Y'all are awesome.

I would be super interested on both your thoughts on this :-)
