KnockBack, Episode 20: Skateboarding in the '80s

Skateboarding as we know it today became a true phenomenon on the west coast in the late '70s and into the '80s, and it just so happens that skating has been one of Dagan's biggest passions for more than 30 consecutive years. So we dedicated today's episode of KnockBack to those neon days, when skating was niche, looked down upon, and truly rough around the edges. It's always a pleasure when Dagan goes into storytelling mode, so... without further ado: Here's what it was like to skate when no one else was.

KnockBack, Episode 20: Skateboarding in the '80s

Comments

I only had a short couple years skating before I injured myself badly enough to swear it off. Fun episode, though.

We were glad to answer your question. Thank you for submitting it! (And for listening, and for your support.)

Colin Moriarty

Weirdly, I've never once snowboarded (or skied), which is strange to me.

Colin Moriarty

Just be safe. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Oh man, Dagan wouldn't like that very much. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening! Glad this episode resonated with you.

Was not expecting to hear Colin say my name on the podcast, thanks for answering my questions guys! I absolutely loved this episode. I remember dropping in those first few times on the extension of our local halfpipe (maybe 10-12 feet) as a 6-7th grader and that rush of adrenaline; I was hooked! It's funny hearing about Dagan's story of how he got into it and how he felt a sense of belonging, cause it was the same way for me 20 years later. I think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is honestly what drew me into wanting to get into the scene. The music, the clothes and style, the art, the identity, the individual skating style; there's so many aspects of being a "skater" that were cool and drew me in. Great episode guys P.s. Snowboarding is amazing, I ended up liking it maybe even more than Skating when I finally tried it. Does take a few days and some money, but it's totally worth it to me

Enjoyed the memories and storytelling. I grew up skateboarding as well, but it was more so the activity that I did when I wasn't snowboarding. There is a certain flow aspect of these two sports that connected with me on so many levels. Lots of transferable balance skills to snowboarding from vert and hill skateboarding. It would be rad to see your reactions to trying a snowsport if you get around to it. Keep up the great conversations!

Knock back drinking game! Every time Dagan says “ What had happened was.” you drink. Absolutely loved the episode! Keep up the amazing work!

David Becerril

Loved this episode because I grew up skate boarding and it brought back all those memories. I need to buy a board and get back into it, skating kept me fit back in the day lol. I also push with both feet like it ain’t no thing ;)

Love love love this episode!!! I've skated on and off since I was 13 as well and I still have a huge love and respect of the sport/lifestyle. Dagan absolutely nailed it when describing the obsessive mentally of people who skate. You couldn't keep me off my board for the first 3 or 4 years after I started skating. I would literally dream about it. Haha. And even though I only skate a handful of times in a year nowadays, I still imagine doing tricks on every staircase, slope and rail I see. Great stuff, Guys!

Alex Gates

That sounds horrendous. Dagan has had some bad injuries, too, but interestingly, I don't know that we even discussed any of them. He fucked up his arm pretty badly.

Colin Moriarty

One of my worse injury's from skateboarding was not whilst I was using my board , walking home from the skate park I tripped over and fell on my board with it facing up and my arm went straight through one of the bolts on the underside of the board ! Had 12 stitches in and still have the scar 20 years later :-) would love to get back into skateboarding now but I don't want to be the old dude trying to reclaim his youth ;-)

Matthew Perry

Great thing to see during your vacation😉

Marcus Brown

It's horrifying. I still have no idea how it's done.

Colin Moriarty

Still haven't seen it.

Colin Moriarty

Love you too, ma!

Colin Moriarty

You're very welcome. Thank you for your support!

Hope you liked the episode!

Please enjoy!

This definitely took me back. No one ever forgets their first drop in the half pipe, skinned my knees badly. Ours was hidden behind an old church and had to be at least 8’. After that it was street only, even though I couldn’t ollie to save my life.

Chris B

Cobra Kai is so God damn good!

Marcus Brown

This was a walk down memory lane! Perfectly done. I remember your outfit, Dagan - the huge baggy jeans tied up with ‘a rope’ if I remember correctly and although you had maybe a 28 inch waist, you wanted a 42 inch waist jeans (which I complied with) 😂 and then how you would be horrified that I washed them and put them in the dryer since they would shrink and be too tight. How your father and I would chuckle over that. And I’m with you in the fact that I understand that need/want of still always ‘wanting to step back on.’ 😉 Fabulous, my boys. I love you... ❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

That's me sorted for my drive home from work tonight ..cheers Colin :-)

Matthew Perry

This will be cool! I never got into it because I lived out in BFE with no pavement, but I remember very well when skating found it's way to GA in the 80's.

Jason Stafford

Can't wait to listen!
