Sacred Symbols, Episode 2: Media Molecule and the Phantom Game

It's been seven years since Sony-owned studio Media Molecule released a full-fledged triple-A game, which is ridiculous. So today, we figured we'd answer a listener inquiry about Dreams, Media Molecule's perpetually-upcoming game first rumored in 2012, shown in 2013, properly revealed in 2014, and... *looks at watch*... well, it's 2018, and it's still not here. We also take the time to chat about Nathan Drake's astounding luck, sales expectations for Red Dead Redemption 2, the status of the long-in-development Dead Island 2, possible release dates for Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II, the future of EA's Star Wars games, the recent God of War movie rumors, and much, much more.

Hey! Very cool! Thank you for your support. You should DM me here on Patreon. Perhaps when you're next in LA, I can have you over for Fireside Chats, or for a piece on Sacred Symbols. Let me know!

Colin Moriarty

I'm looking forward to it, too, though I must admit that I'm not bullish on the game being a huge critical or commercial hit. I'd like to be wrong, though!

Colin Moriarty

Hey CLS!!! I've been Your fan for a while now (IGN and KF) and finally became a patreon - SS pushed me to do it, because I didn't now how I missed Your voice ;-). You are constantly mentioning Dying Light through Your work and in this episode You mentioned that You were supprised by it after Dead Island. I'm actually one of the developers on both. If You want I can tell severall stories about it :-). Was hoping to meet You this years GDC (I was giving a lecture about DL) but didn't manage see You there. If this is something that doesn't interest You than fine - KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! I'M SUPER EXCITED FOR THE NEXT SS

gloVA

I am actually excited for Days Gone. I think Sony gave them the green light because it is something Bend always wanted to do. If you listen to the games creators, Days Gone is a game that is based on the things they love, zombies and motorcycles.

Tyler

Thank you so much! I appreciate that.

Colin Moriarty

Nice. Good info.

Colin Moriarty

It's a nice idea. Or a workaround, at least.

Colin Moriarty

great podcast. I listen to a bunch of gaming shows and this is definitely in the upper echelons. also good to hear you discussing MS, I think that discussion is gonna rev up as we are moving towards next gen. game pass is mind-blowing value, I am only now getting into current gen and it's a no brainer for me to get an xbox, despite playstation's exclusives (PS5 better be effin BW compatible).

Michal Dudic

I remember Uncharted 1 E3 interview talking about the luck system. It's not a ret-con

Kenneth Fegley

Thank you for listening! =)

Colin Moriarty

Did LBP sell well? It was mostly a content creation thing, but it also had some levels made by the devs. If dreams had a game built in, with all the tools used to make that game...

Kaz Redclaw

There's other systems that use the Uncharted damage system, one tabletop game called "Dusk City Outlaws" is exactly that system, Luck is basically your HP, each time something would have done damage, it instead grazes or misses and your luck decreases by that amount of damage.

Kaz Redclaw

Just want to chime in and say I am so excited to have you back on a playstation podcast. Beyond wasn't doing it for me after you left and then we got the kinda funny podcast to save us for awhile! Now that you are back again I'm hoping for at least 500 episodes 😁

Alec Shaner

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

Colin, couldn't be happier to read all of the wonderful feedback on your new show. It's blowing up all over the place. Haven't caught an ep yet, but wanted to say congrats on knocking another one out of the park. Keep doing you, my friend!

Aaron Treble

I'll look into it. I dunno why I never was interested in those games. I shit you not, I think there's like a dozen of them on PS3.

Colin Moriarty

Keep 'em coming, and so shall we.

Colin Moriarty

Glad you're here listening. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Colin you have to play Worms it's such a fun turn-based strategy game, especially when you get some friends together to play it with.

TheBufferPiece

Aye! Good looks on picking my question. The show is awesome. Keep it up!

DonaldJames

What makes games unique as an artform is how it allows the player to be co-artist through interactivity. If a movie is a window, then a game is a door that invites you in temporarily. This whole mentality that a game needs to become a movie to be valid as art is ridiculous. Games have had an inferiority complex to its older brother movies for a long time, it's about time they stepped and stayed out of their shadow for good

Daniel Schiffer

The TV I game on is a Sony from 2009, and it uses the XMB menu... so I’m often reminded of those dark PS3 days...Awesome episode! It’s great to have you back on a PlayStation podcast

Felipe Delfin

It's funny, because Uncharted movie rumors are circulating again today. It's like, let it die already.

Colin Moriarty

Are we talking about the nature in which you aim? Because I think that's what we were discussing...

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I agree. He's got the most endemic gaming knowledge of anyone I've podcasted with, frankly, and it's awesome to let him flex his muscles.

Colin Moriarty

There is an RSS feed for you to C&P on the front page of CLS' Patreon. Login on a browser and grab the link in the upper right corner. Lemme know if you have any issues.

Colin Moriarty

No, sorry. What would be the point, anyway? It's a static image.

Colin Moriarty

The gaming industry's aching to be held in the same regard as film is something I always had an issue with. When you look at the current state of mainstream film (every summer blockbuster = Joss Whedon humor, same plot beats etc), gaming as a whole offers far more variety in terms of experience and in many cases (in my humble opinion) surpasses Hollywood in both artistic merit and entertainment value. Anyone who doubts this should go watch World War Z, then play The Last of Us. David Scott Jaffe actually did a great keynote on a similar topic at DICE a few years ago (2012 I believe).

Justin Matkowski

"I'm not a fan of aim down sites" - Thats an interesting take. I've never heard anyone disliking ADS before. Not bashing the opinion by any means, just one of those things that feels so natural in FPS games now.

Owen

So glad my PlayStation podcast void has been filled once again. Chris is doing a fantastic job as well. He fits right in.

Michael Miller

This is great, Colin. Is this available with a private podcast url at the $5 tier? It would be great if I could get this in my podcast feed without the need to wait 3 days.

Tom Panzeca

Loving the new show! Is it possible to get early access to YouTube version as well?

Cockthatslaps

I'll look into it! Thanks for the recommendation.

Colin Moriarty

Castlevania on Netflix is a pretty solid video game adaptation. Also, while it's not Chasm, Dead Cells is a lovely Metroidvania on PS platforms now.

Jason Bolla

We will chat about this on the next episode!

Colin Moriarty

Next week, I think. Stand by!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! Just wanted to make a comment about Red Dead Redemption 1. RD1 is playable in Xbox One with backwards compatibility...they also recently made an Xbox One X enchanced, so it'll load and run about faster on a standard XB1 and will be in 4K on the X :)

William

I am SO excited to hear about Chasm's release date. I played this game at PSX last year and left the booth extremely impressed. I'm glad you're feeling excited about it too, Colin. Any idea of when you'll receive your codes? I'm hoping to hear your thoughts on the game in a future episode :)

Danny L. Rutherford III

It's a wonderfully-realized, deep, clever game. I also found it terribly boring.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

That's very kind of you to say. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! Horizon was the superior game to Zelda, I agree.

Colin Moriarty

I go down those google rabbit holes all the time. Loving this i was really bummed by peoples talk of Zelda vs my impression when i finally played as well. Never went back and played because i was so bummed.

Erik Peterson

what a fantastic show

Nicholas Swanson

This is now my favorite podcast. I’m already excited for next week.

Nick

Congrats on having ep2 in the bag... Loving this show. I agree on Zelda BOTW... This is a WiiU game that was held back for the launch of switch. So a WiiU game won Game of the Year 2017, Get Fucked!!! Horizon Zero Dawn should have won hands down!

Tony Colton

Yeah, I agree. I think the predicted numbers seem reasonable enough.

Colin Moriarty

Way to drop the ball.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not sure I follow your criticism (though I appreciate you sharing it with me). By the sound of it, Chris played more than I did last week.

Colin Moriarty

I hope it does well. I, for one, am excited to play it. But I've got a bad feeling about it, for some reason. Not that it's gonna be anything less than good... but that it's just not gonna resonate, regardless. Hoping to be wrong.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

We'll discuss this on next week's show!

Colin Moriarty

I have all of the DLC (I bought the GotY edition), so... it's an option worth considering, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

Please enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I like him, too.

Colin Moriarty

I've read about it, but I honestly think that would make the game even less fun for me, at least at this juncture.

Colin Moriarty

Glad you noticed. =) I actually couldn't believe there were pretty much no PlayStation podcasts to speak of on the iTunes 200 outside of Beyond. So, I struck.

Colin Moriarty

I'll allow it.

Colin Moriarty

Try, try again.

Colin Moriarty

I have no doubt that a few top tier multiplayer games outgross a game like God of War, but I also know God of War easily outgrosses 99% of F2P games.

Colin Moriarty

In no world will RDR2 sell even remotely close to 90 million. It’s going to be fantastic for sure, but it won’t touch that. I’m not sure if any console full retail priced game will ever hit that type of success again. GTA V hit this incredible sweet spot of having well over 100 million user install base on 360/PS3 at initial release, a worthy next-gen port the following year which led to many double-dipper buyers, a worthy PC port soon after, and a blossoming online mode that gained popularity at the perfect time of this games-as-a-service type of state we are in. And on top of the timing, it’s an amazing game in of itself and has the words “Grand Theft Auto” in its name. As much as many of us loved RDR, there are plenty of people who bought GTA that are turned off by the Western setting. In short, it’s just as the news story discussed, RDR2 will be a tremendous hit and presumably insanely profitable, it’s just not going to be GTA V.

Zack E

I spent 4 hours on the road today which this episode would’ve helped for and I’m seeing this post just as I’m about to sleep 😂 I look forward to listening in the morning!

Marc Boggio

I’m really glad you guys talked about the weirdness with the Days Gone release date. I remember seeing it in a trailer or something and I was like “what the heck??”. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have a feeling that there might be a sense of emptiness or open world fatigue when the game comes out, but who knows. I’m very intrigued to see how well that game will do critically and commercially. Anyways, this podcast is an absolute pleasure to listen to! You both are doing fantastic!

Will Hahn

Love the Podcast so far!

Jonathan Broussard

I hate to make you touch PS Now (since apparently it has some bad stigma for no reason) and to keep hammering on the idea that PS Now is actually decent, but Red Dead is on PS Now if you really hate to have to go back and boot up your PS3. Just use a 7 day trial and figure out if you're going to like it. If you have a save on PS3, you just have to back it up to the cloud and pull it back down on Now.

John Schulz

Hi Colin and Chris, I’m thrilled you’re back doing this show again. Chris, welcome and best of luck! I’m happy to here you’ve dipped back into Fallout 4, Colin. It’s a special game for me, coming out at a difficult time personally and turning out to be something I really needed at the time. I get the feeling you’re struggling somewhat and wonder if jumping into the Far Harbor dlc might be more suited to your current gameplay tastes as I believe there’s a shorter story with a tighter structure. I haven’t tried it out myself but have heard good things about it! Again, great start to the show!

Christian Doolan

Yay! So happy to have a weekly sitdown and listen to this podcast.

GREATEST PODCAST EVER!!!!!! Seriously so happy your doing a Playstation show!!!!! And I like the new guy. ;)

Yo Colin, have you thought about trying Fallout 4's survival difficulty? I was off and on with that title until those extra rules made me engage with the world in an entirely different way, and I rode that wave until level 36 or so.

Chase Williams

In the past year i have seen dozens of Nintendo Podcast appear and no PS ones. You saw a need for a PS podcast and delivered. Good Job.

Hose A Contra Razz

Re-subbed for this glad to be back. You and chris are the curmudgeon dream team.

This episode was great, guys. God damn I'm so happy this show exists. My question didn't make the cut, but I'm going to be in the thread every Wednesday, so my time will come, hahaha. Also, Colin, the theme song sounds better this week, it sounds like you adjusted it. I definitely noticed.

Ian (616Entertainment)

....trust me.

Luke Farinella

FYI Top tier free to play online multiplayer games are far outperforming top tier single player titles. There are numbers that the public doesn't see, but trust me...

Luke Farinella

It’s a small commitment, too, at just four episodes. I have this feeling that it was originally a movie and that they decided to chop it up and turn it into a series. I have absolutely no evidence to back that up, but that’s how it feels. If you watch it soon, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the show!

Ian (616Entertainment)

That's the idea. Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

I've been meaning to watch it. It looks great.

Colin Moriarty

Yes! If you go to Patreon on a browser, go to the front CLS page and look in the upper right-hand corner. You should see an RSS link there. Let me know if you have any issues!

Colin Moriarty

Y’all saved me from an afternoon of boredom at work yet again. Thanks!

Josh in Tampa

Is there an Early Access RSS link we can use to put into our Podcast Apps?

Robert F Friemering

Real quick, on the God Of War show, no, I don't need that. But I'd like to think Chris hasn't seen the new Castlevania anime on Netflix, as it is really fucking good. If you haven't seen it, or Chris for that matter, definitely check it out. Only 4 episodes (season 2 is coming in October with 8 episodes), and I think you'll love it.

Ian (616Entertainment)

Yes! If you go to Patreon on a browser, go to the front CLS page and look in the upper right-hand corner. You should see an RSS link there. Let me know if you have any issues!

Colin Moriarty

Sincere apologies if this was asked previously but I didn't see an answer, is there an early RSS feed to get these episodes? Thanks for the content Colin, the first episode was great and look forward to hearing the show progress and grow over the months and hopefully years to come

Craig

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it.

Colin Moriarty

Colin thank you for bringing this type of show back. I started your content with podcast beyond and followed you through kinda funny. I think your insight and perspective on the video game industry is better than any other.

Tony Bertucci

I'll relay word to Chris. =D

Colin Moriarty

I love you, too. <3

Colin Moriarty

Red Dead Redemption is backwards compatible on Xbox One. I believe it’s Xbox One X enhanced even. It’s also available on PS Now. I’ve gone back to play my 360 version recently. It is still a magnificent game!

Zack E

This show is amazing Colin. I bet it feels good to finally talk open minded about the Playstation ecosystem again. Love you my man.

You're very welcome. Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

That's an interesting technical point, for sure. Like I said, it solves one problem (how is he taking so much damage?) while creating another one (how come no one can aim?).

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for this. UPD: Oh boy, I didn't know Enter sends a comment on Patreon by default. OK, I'll tell you more in a week 'cause it's kinda embarassing now!

Sergey Zarnitsky

That's very high praise! Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Merry Christmas!

Colin Moriarty

I'm so... scared...

Colin Moriarty

Dude. That's so funny that the Uncharted health is luck. That's actually an idea I had thought about years ago while thinking about how absurd it is that characters take so many bullets. I assumed it would be quite taxing on the system to have to process the bullets and have them move past the character on the fly based on the meter.

Michael Ferrari

I look forward to these as much as a new episode of joe rogan comes on. You’re on my top 5 right now shows to listen to

Brandon H

I'm fucking hyped!!! Everyday it's Christmas with CLS😁

Marcus Brown

Like Jesse Spano said "im so excited"
