KnockBack, Episode 22: Transformers

Between GI Joe and Star Wars -- not to mention all of the other competing toy lines of the time -- the early '80s were a busy era for little boys across the west. But then, 1984 rolled around and brought with it a revolutionary new toy line: Transformers. Transformers' three-pronged approach -- action figures, cartoons, and comics -- saturated the landscape for several years, years Dagan remembers fondly. So sit back, relax, and allow us (well, him) to regale you of stories of toys past, toys that, it turned out, were far more than meets the eye.

Great episode. Thanks as always for what you do.

Colin Moriarty

I liked Weird Al when I was younger, but not really a fan these days.

Colin Moriarty

That's awesome to hear, Jeremy. Thank you for your support! Glad to keep you company. =)

Colin Moriarty

Great episode as always! Was a bit disappointed the sound track wasn’t being discussed but Dagan crushed it towards the end! No love for weird Al? Pretty sure I ordered the soundtrack on cassette from a local music store... Knock Back memories!

Hey Colin, long time listener, first time commenter. After hearing about positive feedback you receive from everyday workers listening on this particular show, it urged me to let you know; I drive around and am in my car constantly as I scout locations for TV shows and Film for work, and I honestly look forward when I have a Fireside Chat/Sacred Symbols/Knockback episode ready to be listened to while scouting. Thanks for creating great shows to listen to and keep up the good work!

=D

Colin Moriarty

An auto-con is when you buy a car from a used dealership.

Simon Payne

Thank you for the clarification!

Colin Moriarty

Just a clarification, GoBots wasn't Tonka's answer to Tranformers, as they released a year earlier. They did get their asses handed to them though!

Jason Stafford

Megan Fox constantly running in slo-mo was the only redeeming factor of Transformers 2. :)

Jason Stafford

I saw that picture! Very cool memory. =)

Colin Moriarty

Fantastic episode , didn't know anything about Go Bots untill I listened to the show and have now realised that my first transformer ( or so I thought ) I got when I was five was actually a go Bot !!!! I have posted a picture on twitter to you both showing me holding it taken in 1985 ! Love dagans story about his first transformer ;-) had me laughing all the way to work !!!

Matthew Perry

I took a screenshot of this and sent it to Dagan. It'll make him smile. =) He's such a Wonder Years fan. (Me too.) Freaks & Geeks died too young!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, as always. Guys, I feel like each episode is like this awesome mix of nerd culture and gaining this great amount of insight into the Moriarty family. In a weird way, it's like a podcast version of a 21st century take on Wonder Years or Freaks and Geeks, with two main characters (a kind-hearted Dagan, who finds himself enveloped in constant 80s nerd culture, and his somewhat neurotic, and sometimes cranky, little brother Colin, who wants only to be as cool as his big brother). And then there's all these great ancillary characters, like Tommy, and their parents, sisters, and grandparents. I just love this series and I never want you to run out of these great topics.

Tyler

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

So good. That's such a good story.

Colin Moriarty

I'll let him know, =D

Colin Moriarty

I'm not even positive I saw Transformers 2. I do know that when I saw Transformers in '07, though, I didn't hate it.

Colin Moriarty

Heh heh.

Colin Moriarty

LOL, I'm glad you enjoyed that one. =)

Colin Moriarty

Spiritron had me rolling!

Kenny Gutzler

It’s funny as I listened to this, at 4 in the morning at work, when you excused yourself for a second to grab your new notebooks, and it was just Dagan talking, I couldn’t help but think how hilarious it would be if Dagan went on tirade like “The Waterman”😂

Alex Ball

Transformers 1 is a decent movie, and I still think it has a few memorable action sequences. Transformers 2 is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in a theatre. I couldn’t believe how bad of a movie it was. Haven’t seen any since.

Zack E

Hahaha Dagan. Would love to see the animated short of that transformer story.

Daniel Schiffer

Hahaha Dagan’s lying ass. Priceless

Michael Ferrari

I think Dagan and I watched different versions of Transformers. I don’t remember it sounding like the washboard in a jug band when they transformed.

Jason Kelley

=D

Colin Moriarty

Every Chicago/Cetera song starts the exact same. It's awesome.

Colin Moriarty

Almost fell out of my chair laughing from Dagan's transformer bluff. So soooo good.

Jason Bolla

It’s absolutely the same song Colin. I also like Cetera/Chicago

Blair Sutton

=)

*makes mechanical noises*

Colin Moriarty

I hope you havent failed me for the last time...

Joey Finelli

CLS, roll out!
