Sacred Symbols, Episode 4: Expanding the House of Killzone

Sony-owned studio Guerrilla Games, the minds behind Killzone and Horizon: Zero Dawn, recently announced that it's expanding its roster from 250 employees to 400. This is huge news, indicating that Guerrilla is going to start releasing games at a far greater clip. So naturally, we discuss. Of course, there's other pertinent news to chat about, too, including expectations that the battle royale genre is set to gross $20 billion next year, Fallout 76's newly announced beta, Spider-man's exclusive PS4 Pro console, the fate of Telltale's The Walking Dead, tons of Bethesda-related chatter, an update on the upcoming Sly Cooper cartoon, and much, much more. All capped off, as always, with your questions.

Ok so where’s the Geraldo: Zero Dawn fan art?!

Joey

Yes! Right you are.

Colin Moriarty

Fun facts: Galoob mentioned in this episode as creators of the GameGenie also created Micro Machines, a childhood favorite of mine. I remember freaking out like the Nintendo 64 kid over Super Van City that my grandparents got me for Christmas. Galoob is owned by Hasbro and I believe they're still around making the die cast miniatres for them still 🙂

Christopher Hopkins

Hey James, thanks for joining us! You'll find a thread each week that'll allow you to post. This week's went live on the 26th. Let me know if you encounter any further issues!

Colin Moriarty

I don't think I've played it since late October or early November of 2013, since before PS4 launched. I actually think I played it (and reviewed it) on a debug, so I don't even have the Trophies, as I recall. Maybe I'll go back.

Colin Moriarty

VR in public kinda creeps me out, simply because of everyone sharing the headsets. It's gross to me. I dunno if that's rational or not.

Colin Moriarty

I looked into those two, and we'll talk a bit about it on this upcoming episode.

Colin Moriarty

Speaking of Killzone Shadow Fall, I had not played it since it first released, and they actually updated it and put an unlocked 60 FPS on it (for the PS4 Pro), even in the big open world parts of it there's no frame dips, it looks fantastic, runs fantastic, and is very fun with the boosted frames. When I played it, it had been so long that the boosted frames sort of caught me off guard as I didn't remember the game ever running that smooth, and when I looked it up it ended up that they did indeed update it for the pro.

Jessica Gutiérrez

Hey Colin, Chris nailed it with the idea of a VR arcade style bar. There is a place here in Atlanta that already beat him to the punch. Its called Revery and you can check it out here https://www.reveryvrbar.com I have been there multiple times now and its quite the experience! I played superhot vr for the first time ever here.

Jeremy Tan

The Bud Spencer -Terence Hill game? They were Italian comedy actors from the 1970's, who appeared in the Trinity films and many others. I grew up watching these badly dubbed films. God knows why there is a game about them. I thought they were dead. Also, about VR, I definately use the 360 youtube videos and cinema mode to watch movies more than playing the games. Tha games are fun but I don't think they've found the language yet in gameplay to make them accessible to the masses. That clunkiness, along the technology limitations currently, are the gameplay problems.

Peter Campbell

I need to really sit down and learn it. I've played it twice, only for a few "days" each time, and then I kinda get bored.

Colin Moriarty

Another great episode - thanks very much both! Stardew has been the only thing played on my Vita these last few weeks. It was incredibly moreish and good for commuting.

Michael Cook

To each his own!

Colin Moriarty

Damn lobsterback! =) There will be a thread for questions later in the week.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. Coincidence? I think not.

Colin Moriarty

People did love Killzone 2, much more than 3, as I recall.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah. That future is a solid decade out.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. It's true. I'm still not quite right. Hahaha.

Colin Moriarty

Red twins!

Colin Moriarty

Ah, good note. I will make that correction in the next episode.

Colin Moriarty

It's gonna be a shitshow. I wonder who'll come out on top.

Colin Moriarty

For sure.

Colin Moriarty

I agree specifically from the "why buy the cow?" standpoint. Quantic works with Sony already, though, again, I don't think that relationship will continue.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. I love how low-information many people who work in games stores are. Not all or even most, for sure, but man, I, too, have encountered some winners.

Colin Moriarty

Welcome back. =)

Colin Moriarty

MTGA.

Colin Moriarty

That's because you're a gigantic nerd. I have a bunch of those statues, too, but I never bought any of 'em, so I felt the need to throw that in.

Colin Moriarty

It's my pleasure. Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

I'm so glad to hear that. Thank you for listening!

Colin Moriarty

I did this last week too, Renner. Pay attention.

Colin Moriarty

That makes me really happy to hear.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

I prefer my character to speak in Fallout. Especially in 4 and it's storyline but I understand your guys views.

Marcus Brown

Hey Colin , I just want to say I was deeply offended by your remarks on how the British pronounce the word "beta " I am from the UK and I actually say the word the same way you do ! .... Ok I'm joking and I couldn't care less because I can take a joke when being told because I have something called common sense and can distinguish between someone being serious and or if they are telling a joke :-) would just like to ask if I want to ask Chris about the show and want his thoughts on it do I send my questions here ? Does he see them ? Or do I post to Twitter ? Loved this episode and I myself had thought about selling my Xbox one but after listening to the show and talking to the CLS community I have decided to hold on to it for now :-)

Matthew Perry

So I was doing my regular morning bike ride while listening to this and no word of a lie as the tangent of Sonic the hedgehog comes up, I passed by a respectful aboriginal painting of an echidna (Australian hedgehog) on a wall. I couldn't stop laughing.

Daniel Schiffer

I may be in a minority but for me Killzone 2 was the best FPS as of last generation. They nailed everything I wanted. Yes, even beating COD4 which is a close second.

Philip Andersen

Really? I find the Switch pro controller to be one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever used.

Joe Bellotta

I'm less concerned about the future of PS should consoles fail. If that ever happened, they could snap their fingers and launch a pc app like battlenet or whatever that you bought their games from. They won't do it yet though, according to Pachter they're still making over $100 on each console. I imagine Microsoft did it because they're not making as much on each sale, they're not selling a financially relevant amount or a mix of both.

hugplx

The Nintendo Switch pro controller just feels awkward. It's better than using the joy cons with the joy con holder, but DS4 and Xbox One controllers feel more natural. Personally, I prefer the DS4 over the others because I feel I'm able to make it do what I want better than with the others. I was just thinking the other day how funny it is that the DS4 is actually the closest to the classic SNES controller than even Nintendo. I've been playing the SNES classic and that controller still feels naturally good to this day.

Nicholas Swanson

Colin is on this weeks injury report after that platinum lmao

Zack E

Red is my favorite color too! I'm so getting the Spiderman one cause I don't have a pro.

Marcus Brown

You get 20% off games that you pre order if you have Amazon Prime. They stopped doing the two weeks after launch thing. Best Buy also stopped doing their gamers club discount, but they’ll honor it until your subscription expires. Mine is good until 2020 😈

Michael Miller

I do not understand the pull to Fortnite but I cannot argue against 2 billion. Let's see what happens when Battlefield, COD, and The Division comes out.

Marcus Brown

I think betas are today’s “demos”. They slap beta on it so they can get away with any bugs that are present.

Tyler

Personally I think Sony doesn't need to waste money on a studio that makes, imho, overrated point and click games. It seems like David Cage would rather be a movie director because he sure as hell doesn't know what actual good gameplay is. Just my 2 cents. Great podcast as usual guys!

Joe Bellotta

I vividly remember a Compucenter employee at my local mall insisting to 9 year old me that it was Mega Man 10 when I asked the release date of Mega Man X. He gave me a long “well actually” lecture about Roman Numerals, my dad wondered why I didn’t know that already (having seen The Last Crusade prior to this) and I remember trying to plead to both of them that the last one I played was Mega Man 5 and that there was no chance I had missed 4 whole games in the series 😒

Marc Boggio

Glad to be a Patron again :)

Stephen Crane

This makes Tuesday great again.

Nader Aboulhosn

I buy collector's edition if the statues are cool. Titanfall 1, Horizons, God of war, Wildlands. i even got the order 1886 collectors for $20 on prime day.

Joey Finelli

Thanks for your hard work, my man.

Ryan Lemieux

I love getting this podcast early. Always makes my day

Craig Carter

Holy shit! Detailed sequence and time stamps. You spoil us with your OCD.

Michael Renner

This brings soo much more joy to my day!

Joey Finelli

In the famous words of Marvin Gaye....Lets get it Onnnn!
