Sacred Symbols, Episode 6: PS4's March to 100 Million Sold
Added 2018-08-07 16:00:03 +0000 UTC
At 82+ million sold, PlayStation 4 is still lighting the gaming world on fire, and will sell in fewer than five years what PlayStation 3 sold in nine. Indeed, it's all but assured -- barring a mega meltdown at Sony, or within the gaming industry itself -- that PS4 will sell 100 million units, a number only three other home gaming consoles (two of them PlayStation-branded) ever reached. So naturally, we discuss what that means. We also take the time to chat about the Metroidvanias that are currently occupying all our gaming time, the newest NPD sales numbers, BioWare's strange insistence that it's still working on Mass Effect and Dragon Age, a possible (but unlikely) comeback for Resistance, FIFA 19's all-new survival mode, and much, much more, rounded out per usual with your questions.

When I wrote back to them after spending time with it I swear they were confused by my questions like in the bubble they live in it was a good game in their minds or something...
There has been a few games in the past year or so that I get an hour or two in or sometimes less because they are just not playable and certainly not enjoyable and I end up just emailing the Developer first always asking about patches but if there is no improvements coming there have been times I just tell them I respectfully can not continue playing their game.

I disagree. I feel that the game will tie a nice now on the trilogy reboot and stand well. The problem is it will stand tall on the ground while the holiday AAA games will be higher on the pedestal and in the clouds.

re: BC with PS5; I’m with Chris - Sony is going to get cocky with the PS5 and make a mistake like they did with PS3. They’ll overlook BC, like when they yanked BC from the non-launch PS3’s.
Their bravado will cost them. Again. :(

Thanks for the chat about Metroidvanias! Colin I would love it if you used your super-powers of influence to perpetuate a new term that described metroidvanias that ACTUALLY have the "vania"! Most metroidvanias really just strike me as metroid-likes. The only ones I ever care about are those with XP/Loot and permanent character progression, like Chasm has. Maybe "Symphony-Like"? Or I'm sure you could coin something better that would catch fire. It would be a gift to players like me around the world! Keep up the great work!

Normally I wouldn't share a link to a video on someone else's content but since this game is so old and I could care less if it gets views now I figured why not share it so you guys can see just how bad the game LIFE OF BLACK TIGER really is that Colin and Chris were talking about during this super interesting content about all the junk games being pushed onto PSN lately (around 18:00 ish). Anyway, I hope you are okay with me sharing the link so they can all see Gameplay Colin - Life of Black Tiger, PS4 Gameplay First Look Preview https://youtu.be/I6sSDNcQMTs via @YouTube

I think I said dominance, no? Like, a clear cut winner?
SNES and Genesis were pretty close. NES outsold Master System like 5:1.

After hearing about your experience Colin playing Overcooked with Erin it made me laugh because me my wife and sister in law along with my mother in law were playing that game and it was getting really serious and hilarious at the same time. My mother in law does not play games and all her character was doing was walking into the wall because she thought she was another character. It was really funny. It is such a great local multiplayer game.

Col you mentioned PS1 to PS2 is the only time a console has remained in top two generations in a row. Does NES to SNES not count? Is it because NES had no competition?

For some reason the Horizon Zero Dawn Board Game was the most exciting news to me.
Over the past year or two I've really gotten into board games. It's honestly becoming a rich and robust industry that has apparently been experiencing a sort of Renaissance. While I'm a video gamer first and foremost I've also developed a huge love for board games. As a video gamer I am fascinated by the way these board game designers can create a fun and engaging experience where the design space seems so limited (unless you're playing DnD where your imagination is the limit). I'll never forget my first game of Ghost Stories that got me into this new hobby. I almost know for a fact you'd love a lot of the games out there like the Cold War themed strategy game of Twilight Struggle, the party game where liberals vs fascists compete for power of Secret Hitler, or the alternative history engine building game of Scythe. It's a different side of the games industry that I'd love for you to explore someday but I know better than to hold my breath.
As for the news itself, I'm a little skeptical. Steamforged has published games with amazing production quality, but in terms of gameplay the board game community reviews are mixed. I've no doubt the minis on this new one will be incredible, but the rulebook will be the deciding factor of whether or not I'll back it.
Anyway, great job on another episode! 5 episodes mean it's been 5 weeks, but it definitely still feels like it's only been a day. The next Tuesday could not come any sooner. Keep it up man! (And Chris)

I think allowing anything and everything to be sold on a storefront is in no way emblematic of how a market operates.
Think about it on a smaller scale. You run a grocery store. Do you carry literally any brand of breadcrumbs that can be sold to you? "If the breadcrumbs exist, we sell 'em!" This was the obviously fatal flaw in Adam Boyes' argument with me back in the day, and it remains so now.

I've listened to you for a long time Colin and I know that's who you are but I think the fact that you're so transparent with your audience, truthful, honest is a little bit underestimated. When you don't give a shit about something, you just say that. And I love that, even if I do care a lot about a particular thing you don't. Honesty and transparency are two very rare qualities these days, and I'm very happy you and your co-host share those qualities. Great episode once again, guys!

Review scores are silly for games, movies, pretty much anything really.
Unfortunately, it’s what drives the bulk of traffic to a site like IGN. But even with that, we don’t need to actually take the scores that serious. A huge pet peeve of mine is when I hear someone say “yeah, that game coming out looks like it’s a 7ish type of game”. Why can’t you just say it looks like a decent game, or a good game, or an average game?

also, Capcom should 100% remake/remaster God Hand. I think this wouldn't be out of the question if DMC5 does well.

Might be a silly question but is a subjective look at game quality to filter games that get on PSN similar to the Alex Jones fiasco? Allowing people to curate a list based on subjective quality seems to go against the market. I know the glut of games makes it harder for people to find good games and hurts great developers but I think it makes more sense for Sony to choose quality games to promote, rather than outright deny what they deem shitty games access to PSN. After all, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

I'm actually very hyped for a Metal Gear film. The director/Writer that wants to do it is a huge nerd of it and want to make an original story so not necessarily just make metal gear 1 but combine ideas of a few. I'm looking forward to it but I understand your view.

I think Sony also published No Man's Sky, which launched on PS4 and PC in 2016. The "Sony Interactive Entertainment" logo splashes on the screen when the game is started on PS4, though I don't know if the same logo loads on PC, as I'm not a huge fuckin' nerd.

Hasn't Okami been rereleased on everything already? Or were you talking about a full ground-up remake? If so, I'm not sure what would need to be improved, considering the art style already accommodates the increase in power on newer consoles so well. Personally I agree that Megaman would make a great remake, so long as they really make an effort to use a totally new and well-thought out art direction. I feel like it'd be a little too easy for it to end up looking cheap or cheesy like a lot of the very bad final fantasy mobile ports.

The one thing I did agree with Boyes about was that the store does need more filtering options, but I agree that there needs to be people that just look at them for a moment. Like Life of Black Tiger you could look at for five seconds and you know it shouldn’t be on the store
