KnockBack, Episode 27: Mad Men

The 1960's in the United States was a turbulent time of upheaval and reform, and Mad Men -- which ran on AMC from 2007 to 2015 -- gave viewers a glimpse into that world from an unusual perch: Madison Avenue. Widely considered one of the greatest television shows of all-time, Mad Men introduces audiences to a wide-ranging cast of characters all revolving around one man: Don Draper, the Creative Director of a New York City advertising agency. With so much to talk about, we structured our two hour-plus conversation by talking about the characters. Not only Don, but Betty, Peggy, Roger, Pete, Joan, and many others. So grab yourself an old-fashioned, sit back, relax, and travel back in time.

Comments

I listened to the Sopranos episode and you guys mentioned Mad Men so many times during that Knockback, I had to check it out. Blew through this show and it was incredibly deep and thought provoking. I appreciate the recommendation and this was a great episode. I see why it is your favorite show. Looking forward to a future watch

MysticMase

This one flew by. So much to cover about this show that I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys did it again on a much slower and in-depth look.

NeO JD

I'm pleased to hear that you took the time to finish the show before listening, and that you liked it so much!

Colin Moriarty

Know I’m super late but wanted to finish the show first. MM is for sure in my top 3 of shows. It’s refreshing having a drama that doesn’t need constant violence and action like other shows such as GoT, Breaking Bad, and the Sopranos. It’s character development and historical context make it top notch.

MeatSpin11

I'm glad your day was made. =)

Colin Moriarty

You guys answered my question! That truly made my day!

domenic squadrito

And.... we’ve already begun a marathon session(s) of Mad Men. And wow- there’s so much more that I’m seeing the second time around. 😉👍🏻❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

Yeah, Pete was definitely lowkey funny.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks ma. Love you!

Colin Moriarty

Indeed, indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Wait! This podcast'll be here when you're done.

Colin Moriarty

You should! I'm on my third cycle. =D

Colin Moriarty

Bob Benson was such a weird arc. But interesting.

Colin Moriarty

You can't go wrong with any of those shows!

Colin Moriarty

you guys mentioned pete and didnt mention his many classic hillarious one liners, "hells bells trudy", "christ on a cracker", "not alright bob!", and throwing his chicken off his penthouse balcony. comedy gold

Pedro Escobar

My sons- what a great episode! So true that SO many of the character were so vitally important to the many plots. But now you have me yearning to go back and rewatch the entire series. After your Sopranos episode, I had the need to do this and I wasn’t disappointed. Thanks, my sweethearts, as always, for your on point insight and hard work. I love and appreciate it - and both of you, of course. ❤️❤️👍🏻

BettyAnn Moriarty

Mad men was awesome. It reminds me that living the high life of drinking too much and fucking around isn’t always the high life in the end. A valuable lesson to learn as I work in a hard drinking, high driving field

Andy Reno

In the middle of Mad Men Season 4, and love it. Should I listen to episode now or wait until I finish the series? Either way super excited to listen to the episode.

Michael Shamah

Great episode! I've watched Mad Men just once and loved it. Listening to this is giving me the itch to re-watch!

Lester Figueroa

After listening, I'm sad there was no Bob Benson from Accounting mention. At the same time, it was so appropriate. That dude was definitely a serial killer or DB Cooper.

Phil Crone

As much as I love Mad Men I believe Sopranos and The Wire are far superior shows. Great television regardless!

Joe Bellotta

Very interesting (and very well said).

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I totally agree: We could do more episodes, and still not get to it all.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! White Christmas rules. =)

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Most excellent!

Colin Moriarty

Started watching the show because of this. Loving it so far!

The Electric Hobo

Can’t wait to listen to this! My favorite show of all time

domenic squadrito

Wonderful episode! +20000 points for mentioning Jon Hamm in Black Mirror as well. One of my favourite shows of all time and probably my favorite episode overall.

Addiholic

Nice deep dive here guys. Yet I feel like you've only scratched the surface. I never jumped in to Mad Men before, but this one has me interested now. Just watched the first episode. Thanks.

Josh James

Loved the episode. Thanks for reading my question. I have no idea if Don truly changed after the conclusion of the series. That’s why I love it so much. For me it’s clear Tony Soprano did not change after his coma and existential crisis. The entire last season makes this clear but the true fork in the road is when he beats up a flunky is S6E5 for the sole purpose of reasserting his dominance. After the beating, the look he gives himself in the mirror says it all. I think Tony dies in the last scene (set up by Patsy Parisi and Meadows boyfriend) but it’s almost irrelevant. Tony failed to retake his life after the opportunity and revelation provided by the coma. I like to think Don truly overcame his prior trappings but who knows.

Dan Kolber

Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Can’t wait to listen. I usually save this podcast for when I’m working in my yard, but Mad Men is my all time favorite TV show so I might have to go ahead and listen.

Brandon Hardman

Thank you so much! We're having a blast doing the show.

Colin Moriarty

Just started this episode, and Colin you talked about the great music in 90210, I feel like all those early 90s shows really killed it with their soundtracks. One that stands out to me was Party of Five, great show with great music. I remember hearing Round Here by Counting Crows in one of the episodes, not knowing what it was and trying desperately to figure out who sang it. Have been a fan of theirs ever since. Another great episode, kudos to you and Dagan for continuing to kill it with KnockBack.

Bryan Finck

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

If you were lukewarm on the first two seasons, no, I don't think it's for you. Which is okay, of course. =D

Colin Moriarty

I hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

The intro isn't indulgent, which I love. Short and sweet, and no real reason to skip it.

Colin Moriarty

The evolution of Peggy btw... so good.

Owen

Started watching Mad Men around the same time I found Colin. The show, and Colin are the reason I stopped drinking bourbon in coke (unless it's cheap bourbon), and started drinking old fashioneds. True story. - I don't know why exactly I love Mad Men... but it's one of my favorite period piece shows ever made. This and Halt and Catch Fire are 2 of the best shows on not only AMC, but all of basic cable. AMCs ability to get strong dramas seems to be second to none other than maybe HBO.

Owen

This never gets old. If you have a minute, watch it https://youtu.be/RLkIPt0VeYU

Patrick A Crone

Hey Colin. I look forward to listening to this down the line. So I’ve actually gone through the first 2 seasons of mad men when they all came to Netflix. Enjoyed the show well enough and certainly appreciated the sense of place it was able to capture. But honestly I don’t feel it captured me enough to want to keep going. Some art I suppose is like that. It speaks to others more than some. And I know I’m in the minority because it is widely considered one of if not the great shows ever. Would you suggest I keep going if I was lukewarm on the first two seasons?

Will Ellis

I've been waiting for this one ever since you guys did the Sopranos. I can't wait to give it a listen. In my opinion, it's the greatest show of all time.

Cody Cieslikowski

I love MM, so many different characters and angles. I always get hyped for the intro!
