KnockBack, Episode 28: Saturday Mornings

In the Analog Days, nothing was more important to a kid than Saturday morning, for it was there that a week's worth of pent up creative, athletic, and outright childlike energy could be expended. Fueled by sugary cereal, Saturday mornings typically began with cartoons, but it was what these mornings in front of the TV could lead to that's perhaps most tantalizing. Playing sports. Going to the movies or arcade. Goofing around outside with friends. Remaining glued to a screen to play video games. Today's episode of KnockBack revolves around these memories, and the serious nostalgia they inevitably invoke in all of us.

KnockBack, Episode 28: Saturday Mornings

Comments

Saturday mornings just ain't the same anymore.

Colin Moriarty

Good choices!

Colin Moriarty

It's great to hear how many people learned English just by watching TV. I love that. Thank you for listening!

Colin Moriarty

I really miss the old children's game shows! There used to be a "Secret of the Cryptkeeper's House" gameshow based on Tales from the Crypt. It always came on Saturday mornings.

Korey Burns

Man this really brought back memories. Getting up super early to watch cartoons and eat my bowl of C3-POs. Some of my favorites were Muppet Babies, Dungeons and Dragons, The Littles, Garfield & Friends, Real Ghostbusters, and Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Francis Bryan

I loved waking up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons. I have a very unique experience of watching all the 90s classic shows dubbed in Spanish back in Peru, where I was born. When I moved to Canada I just picked up where I left off. It’s how I learned English. Saturday mornings were the best part of the week, to me only Christmas could compare in hype. Awesome topic guys.

=)

Colin Moriarty

Capn Crunch is the GOAT

John Lynch

Yes. =D

Colin Moriarty

Gotta give a shoutout to Cinnamon Toast Crunch!

Joseph Ady

I'm glad you're enjoying the show... even if it's a bit painful from time to time. =\

Colin Moriarty

The nostalgia factor was exponential on this one. I think you’re right, Colin, to point out the negative meaning of the word in it’s original semantic domain. I miss them too guys. At 36, I’m not convinced we can ever recapture the wonder of our analog youths. And I don’t think we’re over romanticizing that period- the internet age is a paradigm shift of Kuhnian proportion. Thanks for the memories despite the pain. Love what you guys do with knockback.

Ryan B.

=)

Colin Moriarty

I don't think you guys realize how happy these random discussions make me.

strawhatninja

Life in general was harder back then, but I miss it all the time. Like, I love the internet, but I miss the days of families sitting at the dinner table and being able to talk to someone or watch a show without looking over and seeing them engrossed in their phone. <3

Jason Stafford

Yeah, it's funny, in hindsight, how we never mitigated the risk of both goalies getting lost in the same car. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

That's so cool. I wish I could find a huge retro score.

Colin Moriarty

Very well done.

Colin Moriarty

There's something romantic about not having full control over your entertainment options. Then again, maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

Colin Moriarty

I'll probably never forget these interstitials.

Colin Moriarty

No shit, that's so cool.

Colin Moriarty

Changin' the Subject is a nice addition, I agree.

Colin Moriarty

I'll tell you what, it's been an age since I had a Frosted Mini Wheat.

Colin Moriarty

Afternoons were also a nice treat.

Colin Moriarty

I remember Liberty's Kids! Truth be told, I think I was way too old to be watching it. It was on PBS, as I recall.

Colin Moriarty

It's too bad that kids today can't grow up like we did.

Colin Moriarty

Good. =)

Colin Moriarty

Nothing makes you miss the rain like living in California.

Colin Moriarty

That really is too bad. I used to just be gone for 10 hours at a time. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

It's interesting that two of the first four or five comments talk about eating jam with toast. =D

Colin Moriarty

I watched both, though I have little recollection of either compared to some other shows.

Colin Moriarty

Memories. =)

Colin Moriarty

Good lord.

Colin Moriarty

Listening to you two brought back floods of memories for me. I have some ‘stories’ like Dana never wanting to go to dancing school on saturdays at 8 am and after two years of that I figured out that she just wanted to be home (like Dagan) relaxing and watching tv and playing. So I changed her class to a weekday and that resolved that issue. And ‘the swimmies’ with Colin. Lol Dagan would tell me that he thought you’d n ver learn to keep your arms straight by your side since I NEVER allowed you to take them off while anywhere near the pool. You even ate your lunch in them! 😬 Dagan LOVED Saturday’s. Cartoons. Yes! He wanted no more. 😉 And finally, playing hockey on Saturday’s and Sunday’s - part of life back then. And I always had the both goalies with me. Coach hated that. Poor guy. Maria and I would not separate so neither did u and Stephen.

BettyAnn Moriarty

Wow!!! 😳 that’s amazing amounts of ‘connecting the dots’ . Impressive!

BettyAnn Moriarty

Waking up at a friend’s house on Saturday was great. For me specifically, we had something called first Saturday here in Dallas every month. One friend introduced me to it young. There’s nothing quite like hopping into the back of a truck, with a topper, riding out there and finding all kinds of electronic gems. This was when in the last days of finding pc games in plastic bags (late 80-early 90s).

Chris B

You said you would be interested if Dagan could connect Pee Wee to Return of the Jedi. Well, I can: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was directed by Tim Burton. Tim Burton is married to Helena B. Carter who has also been in many of Burton’s films. Helena B. Carter was also in the Harry Potter franchise, along with Warwick Davis. Warwick Davis has played many roles in the Star Wars Universe, but his most prominent role was an Ewok in Return of the Jedi.

Alex Ball

Ah. Saturday mornings. Up at 6am to watch the live action Lone Ranger, then 7am was Looney Tunes for an hour. After that we were regaled with tales of The Harlem Globetrotters, Fat Albert, Care Bears, Smurfs, Godzilla Power Hour, Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Real Ghostbusters, Dungeons and Dragons, Superfriends and many more. That all led to Mary Lou Retton and Menudo. If you hit Soul Train or American Bandstand you went too far! As a kid in the boonies without cable in the 70's and 80's, Saturday Morning was the only time I had full control of the television and no one would bother me. After that though was all of the farm and household chores.

Jason Stafford

I need the nostalgia to carry me through the day in my soulless gray office so I can make it to Saturday

James Galos

I spent many hours trying to beat Zombies Ate my Neighbors on Saturday mornings haha

Anyone else waiting for Saturday morning to listen?

Michael Renner

It’s funny Dagan mentions Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, it’s the show my dad named me after. For years he would show me the intro song and eventually he bought me a dvd of season one. I don’t think I’ll ever understand how he saw a character with skunk hair and thought, “I’m going to name my son after him,” or how my mom even allowed it.

Jayce Tamulevich

Colin, the book you’re thinking of, I believe, is ‘Spark Joy.’ What’s so funny is that my girlfriend and I say “spark joy” all the time. Any time one of our places is getting cluttered, we’ll jokingly say “you better spark some joy pretty soon.” She and I used to watch NHK (the Japanese channel) all the time when we were first hanging out, and the Spark Joy lady is a lasting memory. I’m only 30 minutes or so deep into this episode and it’s already a winner. Let Dagan know that Changin’ The Subject is a fan favorite.

Loved Saturday mornings! I remember watching Spiderman, The Bugs Bunny show, Animaniacs, TMNT, Jimmy Nuetron, as well as classics that they would show on the channel like Looney Tunes, and my favorite Tom and Jerry. My etc... My favorite cereal as a kid, and still today as an adult is Frosted Mini Wheats! I also very much had chores😧 since I was 6 years old lol with no reward I might add but now I love cleaning. The weekend was amazing as a child but nothing like Saturday. Crazy its done now!? Great show as always.

Marcus Brown

I remember looking forward to school day afternoons more than Saturday mornings for cartoons. Toonami was the shit.

Brandon Hardman

Once I was in junior high, all of my Saturday mornings were filled by competitive swim practice. But before that, I have fond memories of watching Mighty Max... later on Pokémon... and even a weird thing called Liberty’s Kids, about American revolutionary heroes as children : P The international channel where I lived even played Japanese episodes of Dragon Ball Z. I remember watching arcs with Super Saiyan Gohan before my friends even knew that Super Saiyans had yellow hair. Breakfast was always a mix of crispy pancakes, Eggo Waffles, Pop Tarts, and colored cereal. I miss it all.

Everyday Patrick

I had a SEGA Genesis, so my childhood was crap.

My little sister may be the youngest you’re gonna get that had the same kind of Saturday mornings as me or you guys, she was at really the tail end of this way of life for kids

Tyson Williams

Just reading the description to this video brought the good memories.

four24twenty

This episode made me very nostalgic. I loved Saturday mornings as a child.... the breakfasts, cartoons, and hours of playing video games. I totally agree with you on rainy days. I feel like rainy days make me feel happier, more relaxed, and more focused for some reason. Also, I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention honey bunches of oats! That’s what I consider my sugar cereal (or Cinnamon Toast Crunch)!

Will Hahn

Just reading that description made me incredibly nostalgic. I have a very young son and at times I will try and compare my childhood to what his will look like. Maybe his generation has it better, but in a lot of cases I struggle to find it. The Saturday morning cartoons were so much fun, and then the play outside (usually roaming the neighborhood house to house) was even more fun (I'm convinced this was the case even at the time, not just through rose colored glasses as I always remember waking up excited). It's the latter part that I really feel for him. Outside play is completely different, if not off the table completely for a lot of parents (and lets face it, it's a collective thing, one kid can't just be doing it). In my neighborhood there are just less kids in general. Damn, I haven't even listened to it yet....

CTE

I played the hell out of contra at my friends place eating jam and toast. Then we watched Ducktales and played it on NES. Also force five was a big thing and i really wish I could watch all those japaenese robot cartoons...

Piyush Athawale

I wanna know and I tweeted Colin about Saturday’s NBC line up with hang time and the new class saved by the bell. If he watched it and what his fav show was

Matthew Clarkson

Awh man. I remember going to my mates house on Saturday morning o play Sim City on his SNES and eating strawberry jam on toast. Good times :)

Ryan Hughes

Hello hello, i think this is a party, cause i just think i saw the brothers Moriarty everyone is chill, relaxed, layed back, it's almost as good as an episode of Knockback I think this pretty girl is sending me some signals But all I think about now are the Sacred Symbols I should go talk to her, but we'll talk about cats I'd rather listen to some Fireside Chats She does appear to have, though, a pretty huge chest I'd do her over and over just like a Side Quest.
