Sacred Symbols, Episode 11: Lara Croft's Mean Streak

Shadow of the Tomb Raider's launch is imminent, and we've been playing it, so we decided to dedicate a portion of this week's episode to Eidos Montreal's latest. Our conversation focuses not only on the finer points of the game, though, but on Lara Croft herself. Does her selfishness and callousness make her an unlikable protagonist? We discuss. We also go into the copious news that's emerged over the last seven days. Rocksteady is openly hiring for a next-gen game. THQ Nordic's buying streak continues unabated, this time with the Kingdoms of Amalur IP. Henry Cavill has been cast in the upcoming Netflix Witcher series. And that's just the beginning of a heavy news week.

If you're at the $5+/month level, there's an RSS link you can find on the CLS Patreon front page (via browser) that you can ingest into your service of choice (including iTunes).

Colin Moriarty

Is there an iTunes link for the early feeds?

Fitch

That was always my assumption. I'd prefer prettier graphics to higher framerate, and never quite understood the obsession surrounding the latter.

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin wanted to share my thoughts on the framerate performance vs performance mode. In cinematic type games like Tomb Raider, Last of Us etc.. 30 fps and high resolution is the way to go. Movies are shot in 28frames. 60 fps and up are really only for twitch based games like competitive shooters. Deep in depth stories are better in 30 fps. Just think to when Peter Jackson tried to shoot the hobbit in 70 frames and it was widely panned.

Brett Carlson

This is a nice idea. Maybe I'll tell people to send me some fake game descriptions in reader mail to trick Chris with.

Colin Moriarty

Colin and Chris, Often times when you read “This week's new releases for PS4, PS Vita, and PSVR”, I question whether or not these are real games or if their made up. The spelling and grammar are always horrible and hilarious. I’d like to suggest a game where Colin presents Chris with two game descriptions, in which Chris reads, only Colin knows which one is real and Chris has to guess which is fake and why. The reading of these game descriptions has become a favorite segment of mine. I love the “cold read” method of naturally stumbling through each one and laughing at it’s ridiculousness. I wish I were clever enough to come up with a fake description, so maybe the Patrons will help in the comments to this post or Colin can wordsmith a few effortlessly. I don’t write good. I’m sure you noticed the use of ‘their’ instead of ‘they’re’ in the above paragraph. Congratulations on the success of the podcast and thank you for making Tuesdays great again. -Mike

Michael Renner

Eh, gonna have to disagree with you a bit here. The concept of ZOE's was Kojima's, and he was in the same role -- producer -- on both games. Mobile games don't count. Hope you're well!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that was the assumption.

Colin Moriarty

Few corrections: Kojima wasn't the brains behind Zone, writer & director Shuyo Murata, who is still with Konami, is. and most likely why 2nd runner, a game he directed, is getting a re-release. Konami has been making moves just been quiet they have a new Castlevania(its a phone game but being treated as the next installment by them) , have the castlevania series on going, made super bomberman R and supported the hell out of it and when it got Ports they actually got voice actors who played the original characters for the console exclusive stuff & even got David Hayter to record new lines for snake (it was Kojima's decision to replace David with Keifer)

That black guy

They've bumped up the player count in blackout to 88, probably wanted to make sure they could do 80 stably and are going to slowly increase

That black guy

Hype has been, is, and will be the enemy. Always. I've been saying that for years. I remember clear as day being at E3 during the first No Man's Sky showing, and it winning Game of the Show, and me saying in a site-wide meeting, "there's no way this game is going to be what you think it's going to be." Fast-forward three years, and voila. This is why I don't read previews, I don't watch trailers, etc. When it's here, it's here, and I'll assess it based on what it actually is.

Colin Moriarty

The past couple of years my interest in games has dwindled. This may because I’m married with two kids so obviously my priorities have changed. There are only a few games where I truly get excited for with an occasional surprise. I’ve also learned to stay clear of the today’s game journalism. It feels like all they do is just hype things up. I’ve fallen prey to that way to many times and makes the games feel weak when compared to their hyperbolic explanations on the said game.

Tyler

Yeah, now that's a soundtrack, for sure!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah. We'll discuss this on Episode 12, so I can clarify.

Colin Moriarty

Unfortunately, we're finding more and more games shoving shit into themselves merely to check a box. It's lame.

Colin Moriarty

Hearing or reading Jessica Curry's name will always remind me of that super dire letter she wrote about how horrible working with Sony was. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words, Bryan. I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying the content.

Colin Moriarty

There you go. Nice pull!

Colin Moriarty

It was an uncomfortable -- but necessary -- conversation.

Colin Moriarty

Deal with it, Kevin.

Colin Moriarty

Interesting thought, though I would hope that Avalanche is smart enough to put workable shooting controls in their ostensible third-person shooter!

Colin Moriarty

There's something off about it. It does ruin the cadence of the game. I wonder if I'll get used to it. But for now, I don't get it.

Colin Moriarty

I played it for five minutes. So I wouldn't know. =(

Colin Moriarty

Hey Matt! Go to CLS' Patreon page on a browser. At the upper right corner, you'll see an RSS link. Feed that into your service of choice, and voila! DM me if you have any problems.

Colin Moriarty

Butter me up. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Dude, Rush Hour rules! I'm glad you agree.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

MTGA.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I'm the most unnatural promoter ever. I hate doing it. But it's a necessary evil if I'm going to make a living.

Colin Moriarty

Pretty wild stuff. Good for them!

Colin Moriarty

I never played Origins. I wish they would have re-released that alongside Asylum and City.

Colin Moriarty

Oh dear.

Colin Moriarty

!!!!

Colin Moriarty

Weird, right?

Colin Moriarty

No, thank YOU!

Colin Moriarty

Hotline Miami soundtrack though..so good!

kevin berger

Fallout 76 is multiplayer only in the fact that you can not go into a private server by yourself, at least at launch. You will be in a lobby with other real people playing the game. You can do missions by yourself, and they have some measures in place to try and stop people from fucking with people who don't want to be fucked with, but there will be other people present. They do have plans for private servers, but it sounds like those won't be available at launch.

Matthew Skora

I believe there are NPCs, just not human NPCs. There will still be robots, etc out there whom you can communicate with.

Zack E

I got all the trophies for The Witcher except for the new game + trophies. That game had way too much going on, but I still loved playing it. If the story is good and the gameplay has that satisfying loop I don’t mind the extra content that is optional. The Division also did this well building a great story in optional side missions (I actually completed that platinum). When a side quest adds nothing to the story and I just pick up an item to check a box is when I give up on getting the platinum for a game

James Galos

Re: game scores - Jessica curry’s theme for ‘everybody’s gone to the rapture’ is truly spectacular. Score to the Nier series is also fantastic #mtga

Martin Bradford Gago

Thanks to you both for continuing the amazing content, loving every minute of it.

Bryan Finck

GTA used the PS4 controller best. Hearing police radio scanners through the speaker on the controller and when you were being pursued by the police the controller light flashed red and blue.

Kenny Gutzler

Also I listened to this episode yesterday and I still laugh when I think about that human centipede conversation lmao

Gabriel Garcia

This character assassination of Ronald McDonald is a damn shame.

Kevin Sullivan

I feel like Just Cause could completely do without the gunplay. You really don't need it in order to cause untold amounts of destruction. I honestly believe the guns take away from the game and it might be a bigger statement to have them removed from the game. I'm sure avalanche did their best and don't believe this is the case at all but like what if they had intentionally made the gunplay like bad so you wouldn't use it. With that logic it makes more sense to remove it but I digress. Can't wait for JC4. Also keep up the good work Chris and Col!

Gabriel Garcia

You know my brother didn't like the double gear system in MegaMan either. He even said it ruined his rhythm. I teased him but he just bragged about how he just MM3 again so there's that.

There’s No I in LLC

Nier Automata is one of the best soundtracks of all time.

Jason Pettet

I feel dumb asking, but..... How do I listen to this in my Apple podcast app?

Matt Matlock

Holy shit Chris Pratt follows You! Thats so cool. I mean I'm not surprised you're Colin Moriarty the most handsomest man on YouTube and Patreon lol. I'm very excited for Tomb Raider. I also only do stealth cause it's my favorite so I'm looking forward to doing it in the game. I hope Rocksteady does another superhero game also Arkham Knight is my favorite one. Great show as always!

Marcus Brown

Ultimately, I fall on the same side re the Witcher netflix show - who cares? Then I got annoyed by the hypocrisy I guess. Is it still cultural appropriation when a Western studio takes one of a massively under-represented culture's most famous fictional works and 'diversifies' it? I dunno. I'm with you on Rush Hour Colin, lol. I sometimes pull them out of the dvd drawer just to watch the outtakes. 'His name is Lee god damnit!'

hugplx

:record scratches: It's Tuesday day/and the mood is right/We're gonna have some fun/show you how it's done/T.G.I.T. #MTGA

Nader Aboulhosn

I got up to rock steady and my airpods died had to pause for the charge. Also decided to finally download the app because my work headphones are trash. #maketuesdaysgreatagain

Kenneth Oms

I’m only 5 minutes in, and I’ll leave a full comment after I listen, but Colin I just want to say you’re doing a great job with promotion lately. Plenty of Patreon reminders, working in questions on how to find new stuff, etc. I know the self promotion game isn’t your favorite, but you’re getting really good at it.

Ian (616Entertainment)

Fallout 76 is totally online. It's basically gta5 online. Game will have 24 players you can party up to 4 people. Private servers will eventually come but not for a while. Also there are no npc's in the game. Vats will be available only in real time.

MayorGarbageMan

Horizons: The Board Game is at $1,013,560 on kickstarter!

Joey Finelli

Just a note: Firefly (the fire jetpack guy in Arkham Knight) was brought back from Arkham Origins along with a couple other characters connecting the series despite the different studios.

Jakeytar

I would put Scarlet Johansson in front of me and Scarlet Johansson behind me...

Josh James

MTGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joey Finelli

Wtf Chris Pratt follows you lmao

Tyson Williams

Thank you!
