Fireside Chats, Episode 54: Is TV Dying?
Added 2018-09-12 16:00:03 +0000 UTC
When TV programming began reliably broadcasting in the 1940s, the world changed forever. The advent of radio decades earlier already made the world smaller, but with television, you didn't only listen. You watched, too. Fast forward some 70 years, though, and TV seems outright quaint, and the evidence of its decline is everywhere around us. Or is it? Today's guest -- Ethan Anderson -- works at an NBC affiliate in the Dakotas, and it turns out that, depending on your market, the kind of content you're looking for, and the type of audience you're catering to, there's still a tangible demand for the way things were. Indeed, it could very well be that rumors of television's demise are just a bit premature.
Thanks for listening!

Pretty cool hearing somebody from the home state on fireside chats! As always an interesting and unique topic!
As a Brookings native and SDSU grad I took a little offense to the “Football” comments from Ethan but also chuckled quite a bit cause the truth hurts and it made me laugh LOL!
Keep up the great work with Fireside and Knockback Colin! Really enjoying these every week!

I missed this when it went up early but I just finished listening to this episode on the public feed and I wanted to swing-in and comment on a question Colin had about media revisiting local as the world gets smaller.
I am the user experience development lead at a startup (WhereBy.Us) that does hyperlocal daily newsletters in four cities. Our business model is purely oriented around curious locals wanting to connect more with their communities. The appetite for that kind of content is pretty high. We plan to be in about ten cities in a year.

I'm just about to listen to this episode, but I had a similar thought this morning. I watched after school specials sometimes as a kid because it was the only thing coming through to my bunny ears and tin foil television. We don't have cable, but my kids have so many options to choose from. On to the show...

I really enjoyed the episode. Really made me ‘think’ about today’s TV entertainment, how it’s delivered and ‘saturation ‘ of programming that we now have - from a different perspective. Thanks guys.

Good point.
I only have a cable box for sports. Football, in particular.

Neat episode. Having worked in tv broadcast myself, it was interesting to see how it works from a local perspective. I didn’t know about ATSC 3.0 either, will be crazy to get 4k through my antenna one day. He kinda seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about a bunch of things though, which was kind of a turn off.

This was a fascinating episode, especially as I do not even have an antenna connected anymore.

I haven’t listened to the episode yet, however I’d imagine that as long as there is free over the air TV signals, and as data caps continue to cause some issues for some, there will be money to be made from networks, specifically the local affiliates. I don’t have cable, but I do use an antenna for local news, mainly for weather reports, and then special live events such as sports.
