Side Quest, Episode 45: Mega Man 11 Review

Don't reinvent the wheel.

Side Quest, Episode 45: Mega Man 11 Review

Comments

I'm sorry, this comment/inquiry was meant for Sacred Symbols- I download those episodes. But when I settle into my new job I can see myself upgrading to $5 a month. #business #revenue #costs #kindafunnyshouldhaveneverletyougo

Erk-Prime

Hey! It says you're at the $2/month level, so unfortunately, not for you! MP3 version is $5+/month. Sorry!

Colin Moriarty

No mp3?

Erk-Prime

Fair enough.

Inafune always said that he felt the team went too far with Mega Man 4, allowing Rock to charge his arm cannon up. Imagine what he'd think of this one!

Colin Moriarty

I’m welcoming of adding more mechanics and depth but I don’t think it should be for the sake of adding mechanics. I think they have to look at what the foundation of the game is and ask why the base gameplay is fun and ask if the new mechanics contribute and work in tandem with the base gameplay. Like the X series I think the additional mechanics besides the charge shot imo contributes to the base gameplay and doesn’t conflict with it. The double gear system on the other hand is antithetical to the base gameplay. Maybe they can find a way to play with the idea in the future that works better

Tyson Williams

I think the gear system would have been well served in anything but this. Make a New sub series of Mega Man if need be. They literally could have called it Mega Man : Double Gear

John Lynch

I would have to agree with you on that. It seems they know how to capture the magic of those original titles as well as other projects such as Bloodstained in relation to castlevania 3. Who knows maybe they’ll get another shot at the next mega man!

Joshua McGee

Possibly, though running through without it would mean that the first run is the hardest. I dunno. It just shouldn't be there at all.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for watching!

Colin Moriarty

I still think it's worth playing... I just think Mega Man 11 by Inti-Creates would have been five times better.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words!

Colin Moriarty

I just thought it was strange. Mega Man's entire construction changes because he's using another weapon? It's just weird. The Mega Man cartoon from the '90s had the best visual of how I think it works: He basically inherits a piece of their programming. It's not like he's fucking turning into them! It really bothered (and still bothers) me.

Colin Moriarty

It really is a necessary component of the game. You can certainly beat it without using it, I would assume, but it'd be a tough road.

Colin Moriarty

2.5D, breh.

Colin Moriarty

I liked Battle Network. They ran it into the ground, but it was a nice idea.

Colin Moriarty

They're entitled to feel that way! I'm 100% confident in my knowledge and authority on this series more than any other, and what it should be. =D

Colin Moriarty

You're gonna be waiting a very long time. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

No sign of Tango, unfortunately.

Colin Moriarty

Would adding the Gear system much later in the game change the game drastically in your opinion? Would you prefer the first run through be beaten without the Gear system, and unlocked after completed?

Kevin Dunkel

Very entertaining review, watched it while eating :)

Awesome review Colin. About what I expected from this game- still looking forward to playing it even though it misses some of its marks!

Joshua McGee

Hey man. I appreciated your review. If I pick up and play Megaman 11, I know what I’m in for. That’s the thing I need from a review and you delivered again mate so thank you. I love the NES Megaman games now but don’t have the nostalgia for them. I understand that you personally wanted to see or not see certain mechanics in the game and I respect that. Great work again!

Christian Doolan

Excellent review, Colin. I wanted to ask you what exactly it was that you didnt like about Mega Man taking on the physical aspects of the robot masters as opposed to just the color scheme? I've heard you mention it a few times but I was wondering if you'd shed some light on why you maintain that opinion. Was it the break from tradition? Or that it reminded you of Mighty No. 9? I actually thought it was kind of endearing and creative, personally. Curious as to why you didn't like it.

Great review as always Colin! I played the demo and I’m glad to see you didn’t care for the gear system either. I tried to play the demo without using it and realized it’s essential for navigating the levels. I’m a huge mega man fan, but I’m still on the fence about getting it. But thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Ray Tauriello

This game looks uncomfortably close visually to Mighty Number 9....

Michael Ferrari

just curious Colin, how would you feel about another game similar to battle network. Those were some of my favorite GBA titles

John Lynch

Colin I loved the review. I wanted to post this here to make sure you see it not on YouTube. I saw a lot of people saying the review was weird because it was like you were just averse to change. I think those people just don’t get what mega man is. Any time that capcom has changed the fundamental of the game, it became a new series IE X, Zero, Legends, Battle network. This game would have served capcom much better as a new sub series, and I feel that’s lost on a lot of the YouTube audience who don’t get the difference. Loved the review

John Lynch

Still waiting on another Mega Man Legends game... so underrated.

Owen

Hmm...seems like many of these changes would have been better reserved for a new X title, although I don't really mind too much. Incidentally, is Tango, everyone's favorite robotic cat, also amongst the roster list of characters?
