KnockBack, Episode 34: Akira

In the late '80s, Katsuhiro Otomo changed animation forever with the release of Akira, the film adaption of his manga series of the same name. His Akira manga began in 1982, and wouldn't conclude until 1990, two years after the movie was released. But one thing was true then, and remains true now: Akira, as a film, is one of the most impressive and important pieces of long-form animation ever created, and continues to inspire artists around the world to this day. So let's delve into all things Akira, why it's important, why it's awesome, and why it's still so relevant today, not only through the lens of a fan, but through the eyes of a professional animator who was deeply influenced by it as a teenager, and remains influenced by it today.

They aren't as good as the Expanse books. I will say, I'm with you on the expanse. Love the series. I'm almost caught up the next book that comes out in March!

Jimmy Valentine

If you wanna do a Fireside Chat on it sometime (and will be in the LA area), lemme know via DM!

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

I've really heard a lot of mixed stuff about both the book and movie. I'll need to dive in myself and see what's what. =)

Colin Moriarty

They dodged a bullet there by not calling Mr. Bates "master"

Petre Cismigiu

Hey guys, just listened to this episode, awesome episode by the way. On a side note from the end of it, I'd love to have a conversation with either or both of you about Ready Player One. Both the book and the movie spoke to me deeply and not just for the references and I feel like a good conversation is needed to push back on some of the hate I see for both things. The main argument made is that "all it is is references" which is not the whole truth. I also find a lot of people that make this argument haven't read the book or seen the movie and jumped on thst "be part of the conversation" band wagon that plagues the internet these days Thanks for the awesome content guys you kick a massive amount of ass.

Michael Candelaria

Loved the episode. Going to re-watch the movie this weekend. I must say I disagree about ready player one. The movie was decent, but a fun movie. I totally disagree about the references in the book. The references make total sense in the world of the book due to living in a virtual world and being able to build items in that world. I really liked the book. To each their own I guess. :)

Jimmy Valentine

His insight is the best!

Colin Moriarty

So stoked to here Dagan break this down from an animation perspective!

Quinn

Oh, gotcha. I think Dagan used to buy anime there in the late '80s/early '90s. Well, Chinatown for sure.

Colin Moriarty

@colin/Dagan sorry Chinatown in nyc; Elizabeth center mall was on Elizabeth street off of canal street. There was a guy on lower level that sold bootlegs and original VHS anime tapes.

Mike Tse

Elizabeth, NJ? Very cool.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. That's very kind of you to say. I (and we) appreciate it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much for your support!

Colin Moriarty

Anyone?

Colin Moriarty

KANEDAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Colin Moriarty

You're very welcome.

Colin Moriarty

I'm obviously not going to hate on Remembrance Day. I'll just keep hating on Canadian Thanksgiving.

Colin Moriarty

I loved Akira ever since I was 13, discovered it at a friends house watch in Japanese with subtitles and then went to Chinatown, Elizabeth Center Mall (next to the precinct) downstairs, got a dubbed version on VHS. That’s my favorite dubbed version. @dagan I always thought he sounded like Leonardo!!!

I had no idea what Akira was until I watched this. Dagan did such an amazing job explaining what it was and how passionate he was about it. Colin, it’s funny because you say that you aren’t into critiquing movies all that much or don’t have an eye for it (please correct me if I’m wrong!), but I believe quite the opposite. Don’t underestimate yourself, as I found you analysis of the film and animation quite impressive. Fantastic episode and hats off to you both for making it so engaging.

Will Hahn

I finally went $5 tier because I couldn’t wait to hear you both talk about one of my favorite movies of all time. Keep it up guys!

Justin Weymouth

I just saw this, Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/1632364611/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_W0STBb94ECS97 does anyone have it it’s looks amazing.

Mike Tse

Kaneda!!!! Tetsuo!!!!!

Mike Tse

My favorite movie of all time. Best movie ever made (at least in my opinion). Thank you Colin. Thank you Dagan.

Azzan

Hahaha, it’s the weekend where we get the Monday off and also the one where my mom is making a Turkey and stuffing so yes... yes it counts 😏 The only long weekend we get in November is Remembrance Day and if you’re in the military that’s all binge drinking and swapping war stories with the coworkers and the old vets at the legion (also fun, but not wholesome thanksgiving with the family fun)

Marc Boggio

Does Canadian Thanksgiving count, though? Seems a bit premature, guys. It's October.

Colin Moriarty

Saving this for my drive to Toronto tomorrow (Canadian thanksgiving weekend), but I greatly look forward to it as Akira is my favourite animated film of all time 👍 (Though I will blind vote for Dagan to make Kaneda and his bike one of the Patreon art prints before I listen 😂)

Marc Boggio

No reviews! But we'll certainly talk more anime in the future.

Colin Moriarty

What a coincidence!

Colin Moriarty

That's where Dagan and I watched it right before doing this episode, to refresh ourselves. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! <3

Colin Moriarty

As we discuss, it's totally nebulous. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support! Welcome, and enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Well, I hope you find what you're looking for. =)

Colin Moriarty

I feel like I do a pretty good impression, if I do say so myself.

Colin Moriarty

Nice can't wait to listen to this :) You guys should also consider in the future review some amazing anime movies like: Perfect Blue, Ghost in the shell, Hauru no Ugoku Shiro, Mononoke-hime and one of my favorite Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

Saulius Vekteris

that's insane, I just got my final volume of the manga in the mail earlier today. can't wait to listen to this.

Michal Dudic

Very cool. I just watched this a month or so ago on Hulu in anticipation of this topic! I've always had an appreciation for anime, but somehow missed this one. Things have definitely changed in that regard, Hulu has a great selection, so my wife and I have been binging quite a bit!

Jason Stafford

Love KnockBack. Makes my week

Jeshua Anderson

Akira is visually stunning. I still want that bike. But i still don't quite get the movie. When dude turned into the blob thing I was like "ok I'm lost...".

Jeshua Anderson

So glad I FINALLY was able to become a Patron. I truly appreciate all your content!

Forrest Hunter

I was deeply affected by this movie , I don't think I can explain how it affected me or how it had an affect on my life but I hope listening to this podcast I can have a better understanding :-)
