KnockBack, Episode 37: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

It's almost always true that "the book is better than the movie." But when it comes to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory -- which is based on the 1964 Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory -- the movie is definitively better than what inspired it. Starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a timeless mix of humor, music, and zaniness, and, nearly five decades after its release, it's as amazing as ever. So join us as we take a trip down the Chocolate River and remember the unusual adventure of a young boy named Charlie, his grandfather Joe, and a group of terrible children intent on inheriting a lifetime's supply of goodness, goodness that eludes all but one of them.

I'm glad the new generations are appreciating the old classics. =)

Colin Moriarty

It's so good.

Colin Moriarty

Augustus Gloop's father eating the interviewer's microphone is one of the finest moments in cinema history.

Justin Matkowski

Willie Wonka may actually be my favorite movie ever. I got my 5 year old to watch it and he loves it as well (other than the scary tunnel scene lol).

Would never entertain the thought that it isn't a good thing!

David Graham

We'll get mom on an episode, no doubt. =)

Colin Moriarty

That's a good thing. Be nostalgic!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for the warning! It's the same here in Indiana, too. I agree with Colin when he said that mustard is the devil's condiment.

James Kinslow III

James... be very careful if McD’s burgers in New England. Yep...mustard! 🙄

BettyAnn Moriarty

That would be fun to do , Spencer! Maybe one day... 😉

BettyAnn Moriarty

You need to be on an episode with both of them and talk about the 80s and 90s

In my humble opinion, Willy Wonka is the best movie of all time. SO many lessons in this film (besides the ‘humor’ and sometimes creepiness of what was happening at times). Your father and I waited on line for a very long time to get into the theatre. And we were surrounded by families with young children which made us feel sort of awkward - but we hung on and were thrilled that we did. I think that this was the one time that aunt Janet and uncle Frankie didn’t join us. (We really did do everything together... The good old days , for sure.) Great job, boys. Can’t wait to see what you’ll talk about next.

The amounts of films from my childhood that Knockback has made me go back and watch...

David Graham

If mustard was eradicated from this planet, I wouldn't shed any tears.

Colin Moriarty

I must say that I completely agree with you on mustard. I fucking hate it! Heinz ketchup is number one for me. Mayonnaise is good as is Sweet Baby Ray BBQ sauce, but mustard can be shot to the fucking Sun. I live in Indiana where putting mustard on sandwiches is commonplace, so I always specify when ordering food to make sure that it's ONLY ketchup (and sometimes onion, too).

James Kinslow III

You oughta!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode it made me want to go watch it again.

strawhatninja

That I didn't know. Still, they have no place playing it.

Colin Moriarty

ONLY Oompa Loompa songs = Creepfest Galore.

Colin Moriarty

Mayo is the dominant condiment. Ketchup, too, of course.

Colin Moriarty

I gotta say, my idea about how only the Oompa Loompa songs should be there is a good one... Would be creepy as hell.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening!

Colin Moriarty

The Devil's Condiment.

Colin Moriarty

Good thing she's your ex.

Colin Moriarty

Yes yes yes, we got there in the end!

Colin Moriarty

Good to hear! I'm Philly-bound in early December to record the next batch.

Colin Moriarty

I played hockey in the early-to-mid '90s with a girl named Becky, and her parents had this sweet van with a VCR, CRT, and SNES. We'd drive all over New England in that thing, and it was glorious.

Colin Moriarty

Grandpa Joe is such a punk-ass bitch.

Colin Moriarty

Family Guy is always good. =D

Colin Moriarty

Unfortunately, Greg, your name is now Grant. (Honestly, I have no idea how that happened; probably a transcription error on my part. I apologize.)

Colin Moriarty

To be fair colin the Sox only played that in response to Aaron judge blaring it in the Red Sox club house after the Yankees won game 1.

Chad Lewis

As much as I love the songs... I’d love a songless edit like you guys mentioned. That would have been a wild take.

Kenneth Koepnick

Loved this episode. I don't think you can take out all of the songs like you said Pure Imagination is iconic, but you could for sure cut out some of them in the early stages. This was always a favorite of mine growing up as well, when it is truly a messed up concept, but most of Dahl's books are. I loved James and the Giant Peach as a kid, and that book is actually fairly terrifying when I went back to read it as an adult as well. I've shared the movie with both my 14 year old when he was younger and now my 7 year old just this year. They both have loved it, but I think my oldest liked it more when he was younger. Also loving the The Worst segment at the end. I think it's probably my favorite tangent topic you guys have done. Even if you don't like Mustard on hamburgers... Give me some spicy mustard on a sandwich any day over mayo ;-).

Britton Dowers

You guys are right, taking out the songs before they enter the factory would make it a much better film. There’s a much worse condiment, ranch. I don’t know why, but people around me in Texas love that nasty shit and put it on everything, even pizza.

Chris B

Pure imagination definitely justifies the music aspect of the film! Great episode guys!

Brady Bosuego

Listening to this episode makes me want to watch the movie again. I used to watch it all the time in elementary school when we’d have movie days. RIP Gene Wilder. Duuuuuude it’s so unfortunate that you hate mustard hahaha. I’ll never forget your Conversation With Colin episode about it back in the day.... hearing you talk about your hate for mustard is hilarious! I’m the one who loves mustard and olive oil mayo..... please let me still support you lol.

Will Hahn

My ex put me on yellow mustard on Pepperoni pizza and I love it. No joke! Please don't cancel my Patreon. Subscription. I'm just being honest.

Jeshua Anderson

I was initially shocked at the fact that pure imagination wasn't discussed in songs, but you mentioned it and it got some love. I love the song pure imagination and was my favorite part other than the you stole fizzy lifting drinks good day sir part hahaha. Great job guys

Ryan Harvey

As a Sharks fan I know I hate the guy

James Galos

Oh and for what's it's worth, I love that you guys do the show in person because of the rapport you two have with each other. It's what makes this show so good.

William

One of my favorite episodes thus far. My siblings and I would keep a copy of the VHS in our van (which had a VCR AND TV built in) and would just watch it on repeat. Definitely in my top 25 movies of all time. Also, shoutout to Frau Blucher. 😂😂😂 I would absolutely love a Young Frankenstein topic in the future ❤️

William

BURP CHARLIE IT’S THE ONLY WAY!

Tyler

Loved this. Have you seen the family guy spoof of it? greatness.

Joey Finelli

Colin, thanks for including my question! You called me Grant instead of Greg, usually people mess up my last name and not my first name, but I'll take it nonetheless. Love the interactivity with your patrons on these podcasts.

Greg Ohlenforst

I wonder how many people got the Todd Bertuzzi reference. Does any NHL fan not hate that guy?
