Sacred Symbols, Episode 17: Days Further Gone

Just when you thought Sony Bend was actually going to release a game this generation, you were wrong. Well, kinda. The studio's eagerly-anticipated third-person open world game Days Gone has been delayed, and we discuss what that means for PlayStation 4's 2019 calendar year. Sacred Symbols, Episode 17: Days Further Gone

Comments

Just had another thought that would provide the outlet for video content, more exposure on podcast services, and cutting out YouTube completely. Have you considered turning Side Quests into a video podcast format?

Joey Rawlings

Hey! Chris compared the level of interactivity in RDR2 with that of a D&D game, which seems interesting. But it made me curious about both of your experiences with tabletop RPGs, if any, and whether you have any thoughts about the explosion in popularity of D&D lately, partly due to live shows like Critical Role.

plancked

Hey Colin! I just wanted to see if you're planning on talking about The Quiet Man on this week's Sacred Symbols since you mentioned you had an interest in it during this one. The game obviously got panned critically, but it has one of the most interesting and genius stingers after the credits that has me excited for the end of this week. Regardless of what you thought of the game, I'm wondering what you might think about this interesting and creative cliffhanger?

Nathan Guergis

It's a possibility, but highly unlikely, unless I significantly scale my company. I don't even have the bandwidth to figure out my merch situation. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Hi guys, Just wondering what your thoughts were of hosting your own website and serving video content from there. I think about what Burnie from Rooster Teeth has said in the past about having your own site and not having to rely on external video streaming sites. I remember in the early days of RT, they hosted each individual video on their page to download (no embedded viewing in those days). If you aren’t drawing income from Youtube via ads, then why continue to use them? I’m sure websites can be built now with ways to embed and host video in a content management style (for a cost) that would also provide a ‘one stop shop’ for CLS public RSS feed links, videos, a bio page, and merchandise whenever it comes back.

Joey Rawlings

I'm pretty content with just downloading them and using a music player on my phone

Peter Mark

I started Rondo last night myself. Game's tough! Trophies should be doable though. Just gotta stick with it.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much! We're glad to have you here.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, YouTube is starting to piss me the fuck off.

Colin Moriarty

I started Rondo last night. Game really is hard. Love it. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

At the end of the day, it really is a matter of if you're willing to work hard or not. No one should do anything uncompensated or at the barrel of a gun, but if you're doing it for funds, respect, or out of necessity, who the hell am I to judge?!

Colin Moriarty

Peter, Patreon's app sucks. If you need help using the RSS feed, just DM me, and I'll help you out.

Colin Moriarty

I have no idea, to be honest. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Make your money! That's what I say.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's definitely weird, though I suppose they're trying to reach audiences they wouldn't otherwise. Also, I bet you those exclusives are windowed. Both will be on Xbox One eventually, I assume.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! Glad that resonated.

Colin Moriarty

I'll reiterate what I said: I don't think they were worried about thematic similarities because I think Days Gone was probably supposed to come out like two years ago. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Yup! Creativity doesn't happen within neat parameters. Never has, never will.

Colin Moriarty

You're very welcome! Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

I mean, we're kinda mincing words at this point.

Colin Moriarty

I never thought Sony truly believed in the game, or the team. I'm hoping for the best, though.

Colin Moriarty

We shall see! I'm also having an increasingly difficult time separating what I'm hearing in private channels from what's being said publicly. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Colin I was wondering if you got to play Castlevania Requiem. I made a comment about the platinum not looking that difficult and then I booted up Rondo of blood. The alternate routes are unforgiving. I just spent 45 minutes at the alternate route on stage 2 😭

John Lynch

Thank you for the apology concerning the virtue of hard work guys. I couldn’t agree more, and your insistence on excellence as virtue, remains one of the primary reasons I’ve followed you so long Colin (and now Chris).

Ryan B.

In terms of the YouTube notifications mentioned in this podcast, I found out that it turned off the bell for me on side quest. Not sure why but I just noticed it today when watching the red dead 2 video. Damn YouTube...

Fred Bence

Colin I just wanted to let you know that Chris mentioning Doom for the 4 months or so caused me to finally go back and finish it while waiting for Castlevania to unlock. Just went over the trophy list, platinum doesn’t look to bad besides finishing stages with no damage on Rondo

John Lynch

When you first subbed to the channel on patron you got sent an email that has the RSS feed link for YOU. You copy that url into the add podcast section of the app you use

John Lynch

I download it and listen through Samsung music player. Streaming on Patreon blows

Jeshua Anderson

I feel like this new generation isn't built well in alot of regards. But I feel like its our fault kind of. They're our or our older siblings kids. Giving them trophies for everything didn't pan out too well.

Jeshua Anderson

The heat Colin and Chris are taking om this is absurd. Colin is right on outrage culture. Up above a dude literally loses it on Colin about it. The hills people choose to die on blows my mind

Jeshua Anderson

I've just started downloading them and using google play on my phone

Peter Mark

I still don't know, how do you do it?

Bryan Finck

Use the RSS feed. Took me a year to find what that was lol

John Lynch

Great episode as always! I definitely think creative jobs rarely, if ever lend themselves well to a typical 9-5 schedule. I'm the editing lead for a tech YouTuber and it's an amazing job with great benefits but sometimes we have to come in early, work late or come in on a Saturday. It just comes with the territory and It's all practice for my own channel too which has benefited directly from me putting in the work at my day job.

Jimmy Champane

God I hate patreon's streaming service

Peter Mark

Colin, If the PSN username isn't attached to a random digit, why can't we just use the old username as the random digit going forward so behind the scenes, I might be animetitlover69420xoxo, but to my friends and family I'm hentailoverrawrxd?

Brandon Reed

Hi Guys, The most I have ever worked in a pay period (2 weeks) was 170 hours, but it was under extreme circumstances and once I realized that I was eligible for a ton of OT, I jumped at the opportunity. I took extra drives for shows (I work in the TV equipment business) and knew I was going to be on site for a couple of 18 days for shows. I wasn't forced into it by any means, and once my bosses realized how much OT I was making, they let me know it wouldn't happen again because they thought I was overworked. I think it changes from employee to employee, but as long as you are up front about wanting to or not wanting to do it, I don't see it as a problem.

Brandon Reed

Colin’s know this is a PlayStation podcast but something I’d like to touch on about Microsoft exclusivity situation that I find odd. Microsoft has been putting all of their Xbox exclusives on PC, however one weird announcement they have made is regarding Gears tactics, for some ridiculous reason, the game is a windows 10 exclusive and they are making gears POP! Which is a mobile exclusive. I think it’s absurd that PC gamers are getting gears 5 yet XBOX gamers ARE NOT getting gears tactics. I take it as a slap in the face to someone who has been an Xbox gamer from day one. I switch to Sony around 2015 and this makes me glad that I did

John Lynch

I'm head chef of a resturant / gastro pub . I work 60 hour weeks and I do so because we are trying out a new menu and I do the hours because I want the reauturant to succeed , what I have noticed in the last ten years in the industry is that the younger generation don't have the same work ethic that I have , not to sure if this is the same across all industries but I truly believe that kids growing up now just don't have the same values or work ethic that have been installed into me !!

Matthew Perry

Food innuendos! Spell correct-Aaaaah!

Joel Blair

Your good innuendos rule!

Joel Blair

I’d like to also talk about workplace hours. I don’t know why everyone is assuming the people who HAVE worked more didn’t do it of their own accord because they chose to. This past summer I worked 6 days a week, 14 hours a day. I did this because I chose to do it to pay off massive debt, while still being able to take my family on vacations and live a good standard of life. I wasn’t forced to and I don’t regret it. I feel like part of this is being overplayed the internet outrage by people who don’t even understand what it’s like to put in work and long hours for a GOAL

John Lynch

Same here. The microtransactions haven't bothered me one bit. Just feels like a normal game to me without them. If anything, Origins was worse as they'd actually let you buy skill points! I've put about 40 hours into Odyssey so far and I've been having a ton of fun.

Jason Stafford

Right there with you. I work 40 a week, with a little overtime when it's needed. I still bust my ass in a freezing in the winter, sweltering in the summer warehouse. Then when I get done with that I still have a ton of stuff to do at home that I don't get paid for. Maybe I've worked in too many factories, but in my experience tons of overtime comes down to not enough employees or a poor plan. I'll never be rich either because it's my choice to put value on loved ones and having a personal pursuit or two and I'm okay with that. It certainly doesn't mean I don't take pride in my work or that I'm lazy.

Jason Stafford

Thank you for your words on the 100 hour work week Colin. Last week when i commented that I and others had done 100 hr QA work weeks at Nintendo back in the day, your statements on this episode was all i was trying to get at. Yes they happen out there, but by choice and people are well compensated. Its not slave labor so people need to calm down. You were spot on!

Jeshua Anderson

Great listen as always guys. To touch in your days gone talk, I’ve always felt they aren’t worried about two zombie games is because we’re assuming they are similar thematically. The last of us is a more linear game, where as Days gone looks to be like a sandbox style, it seems like most people aren’t looking at it that way at all which I feel is completely on sony’s poor marketing of it. I’m excited for this more than the last of us 2 to be honest.

John Lynch

I create the graphic designs for a local soccer supporters group. It is purely a hobby that I enjoy and there have been days I have spend all day working on designs for upcoming events and promotions. Completely agree with your stance on understanding, this will happen from time to time when working in the creative field.

Kenny Gutzler

Another great one, guys. Thanks!

David Graham

Hey Colin! Great show as always. I have heard the complaints about Assassin's Creed Odyssey and it's quite baffling to me. Yes there is microtransactions but in no way shape or form have I felt the need to purchase it's boosters, or supply aid. I feel there's more behind why they did that. Seeing how there's so many games out there and some have to review these games in a certain time frame may be one of the reasons why Ubisoft incorporated that to ease the players in and out if they dont have 100 hours to spare. That's just my take as someone who has felt no grind and feels the same as Origins the year prior. I'm also a Ubi fan boy so take my words with a grain of salt. Appreciate you and your work. Looking forward to the the next episode and RDR2!

Marcus Brown

Colin I wouldn't call God of War an open world game. It's more of a linear sandbox. With like metroidvania elements. Different powers allowed you to access different area, and you slowly unlocked side areas as the story was progressing. Same with Metro Exodus, more of a sanbox not a true open world, but your opinion overall is well noted. Bigger is not always better.

Brett Carlson

I don't think we should normalize 60-70 hour work weeks. As Colin said, it comes at a cost. But I guess who am I to say whether or not that cost is worth it... personally I've discovered it's not. -- You can work hard and care and still have work life balance. Just because I don't work more than 40 hours doesn't mean I don't care. It means I also care about my wife, and my family. -- but yea I'm never gonna be a rich guy either lol. So decide what matters.

Owen

Also Days Gone didnt get big shine at E3 bevause if you remember it had that huge GAMEINFORMER blow out just the month prior to E3. I also know someone who has had quite a bit of hands on with the game and it seems the issue is not quality, but polish. Days gone; due to it not using the proprietary Sony assets, is not as squeaky clean performance wise as we have come to expect from Sony 1st parties. Think of this game as more Ubisoft level then God of War level. Sorry for the length. Just got tons to say lol.

Brett Carlson

Hey Colin. Just wanted to say I think the read of TLOU2 you guys have is a bit off. Sony has never confirmed a date or window for TLOU2. I believe it's actually further out then you guys believe. My gut tells me it's a late 2019 game with a possible push to early 2020 similar to what happened with Horizon Zero Dawn. Sony is not dumb. They are a massive company who knows when and when not to release. I personally believe Ghosts of Tsusima is closer then Last Of Us. I believe Last of Us may be one of the final first part releases for PS4. Up to this point all we have gotten are tone peices and 1 vertical slice of gameplay. I predict E3 2019 we got the 1st date for Last of Us for late 2019 and then it gets pushed to early 2020. Sony wouldn't announce a release date at E3 and then release in the summer. Just not there style.

Brett Carlson

We can all be right! =D

Colin Moriarty

i just realised that even though usually Colin is right, I was (kinda, stretchingly) right when it comes to our psn usernames. Turns out that what sony is proposing is kinda what i said a few weeks ago when i sugested that sony could keep the original usernames in the background and letting us change what other people see as our usernames. But i do guess that Colin WAS in the end, that would cause a lot of trouble with older games and online games

John the Nabo

Well said.

Colin Moriarty

Hard work will beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When talent does work hard, that’s when we get our Rockstar Games, Naughty Dog, etc etc

Zack E

Honestly, I'm probably not the best person for the job. I don't feel a ton of sympathy for people who work 60 hour weeks... maybe that's just me. But if "activists" have an axe to grind, then perhaps I do too, from the other angle: I like hard work, and I think it's awesome, as long as it's voluntary.

Colin Moriarty

There it is. Told ya!

Colin Moriarty

He won't take too kindly to that.

Colin Moriarty

Good! I want our show to bring people laughs.

Colin Moriarty

I can't wait to hear his next set of excuses.

Colin Moriarty

Honestly -- and I don't want to blow them up on the podcast too much -- but there are people on Ubisoft's editorial and PR teams who absolutely don't like me, and I have little doubt that has to do with our lack of access. But all we can do is try, and if we fail, we'll figure out a different way to cover the games that matter to us, and to all of you.

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

I came up with the name when I was in bed last week, and I ran to my office to write it down. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

I still don't believe that's your real name. Not for a second.

Colin Moriarty

Keep the good questions coming!

Joey Finelli

I know that it hasn't came up on your topics for CLS: Side Quest to talk about, but Colin, I vote that you do a Side Quest video about the crunch topic and it nuances that people are ignoring. Everytime I see someone do a video about the "100 work week," I go slightly insane at the lack of skepticism and critical thinking that goes into these videos and I think you are a fitting voice that could further explain this topic in video format to counteract some of these lazy "activists."

Cletus, the angry pro-life fetus

Tell Chris he’s a lil bitch for not mentioning Doom last week, I’m not mad I’m just disappointed

Tyson Williams

Just reading the pop tart part of the description had me laughing hysterically. 👍

Jimmy Valentine

I have a very normal job. There is an idea of a crunch at any job I've been at, whether processing or project management. It's not as drastic as the video game industry in my industry, but I think certain jobs will always have a crunch aspect to them. Jobs on deadlines always will. You have to stick to a deadline eventually and can't push everything back forever. I know personally, I stay later at my job for a multitude of reasons, but I'm being heavily rewarded. And I also do that to myself. No one ever tells me to stay. While I'm not going to say it isn't toxic, I don't think it always is. Certain jobs will always have the crunch. A lot of my friends who are lawyers signed up for that crunch at big firms.

Jimmy Valentine

Yo... Let Chris know that the secret photo ops in Spider-Man are not needed for the Platinum. #NoExcuse

Edward Walton

People claiming there's an "ax to grind" are being silly. Have THEY worked a normal job? I know Colin and Chris haven't. I think they are being just as hyperbolic. Crunch is a toxic work ethic. There's no excuse for it. The clarification to the initial comments was silly; it's language within the statement was ridiculous.

John Nelson

Thanks for bringing up the whole publishers not wanting to work with you thing.. since Spiderman I’ve had a feeling some of them may be hesitant to work with you and Chris because of the narrative about the two of you that can’t be controlled. Maybe just speculation on my part, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that maybe was part of it unfortunately. Anyways, keep up the great work Colin (and Chris)

Craig Carter

Hooray for This!

Joey Finelli

can we all just take a second to appreciate this episode title is fucking genius. because I just died laughing in the middle of class when it popped up on the feed lol
