Sacred Symbols, Special Episode II: Red Dead Redemption 2 Spoilercast

Red Dead Redemption 2 is -- beyond a shadow of a doubt -- one of 2018's very best video games. Indeed, you could rather easily make the case that it's 2018's Game of the Year, period. To celebrate Rockstar's brilliant new Wild West experience, we decided to do an episode dedicated entirely to RDR2, in Spoilercast form. You know what that means: We're going to spoil the heck out of the game, so don't listen if you haven't beaten it yet! We talk about the characters, the setting, the story, the gameplay, and much more, and integrate plenty of your questions, comments, and concerns into the mix, too. So go gather the fellers, light the campfire, and get-ta listening.

I've finally done it, I've finally played and beaten Red Dead 2... And now I'm here listening to this spoiler cast 4 years later

Finally got around to playing the game and listening to the podcast. Great game and podcast. I think I am unusual in that I prefer the first game and John Marston character over this one. I think Marston got greater development in read dead two but had a more substantial character than Arthur Morgan. Morgan was a terrific character, funny and grumpy, eventually emotional, but Marston's struggle, of hunting down people who he worked with, to save himself and his family, struck me as more dramatically satisfying. I think how the first story developed and ended was stronger than the second game, which had great elements but meandered a little. I remember feeling pushed towards the ending of the first that wasn't as interesting in 2. But the missions in 2, though, were so much fun. That's what made it. A great game, but not quite as great as what came before.

Peter Campbell

Just beat the game yesterday and immediately put on this episode while riding around as John Marston. What a game. Really enjoyed the episode! I hope you didn't have to sacrifice an extra baby to record this. Still worth it, but that's a lot of blood on your hands.

I can't decide if I hate this game or love it. I don't think it's as good as GTA 5. GTA 5 was a lot more consistent and was a little more self-aware. I don't appreciate how bloated and indulgent RDR2 feels. You have to go at a walking pace past important events, missions, and through your camp, slowing you down constantly. The graphics are gorgeous but the actions tied to every animation are laborious and inefficient. The weather effects are great but the game is never that dark (like, DARK dark). I never had that much of a problem with the game play (because I play Dark Souls a lot, which is known to be clunky), but the UI is atrocious. Button combinations for NPC interactions for an action game is a terrible idea. The lack of fast travel isn't that bad, but the emergent events can cause a perfectly innocent horse ride to go abruptly wrong.

Hey Colin. Just wanted to comment on your thoughts about the story and the dissonance between the main missions questions. On the note of Rockstars main missions being decidedly linear, I have to say I think this approach raises the quality of the game. In open world RPG where you can tackle story is 100 different ways the quality of the mission and the quality of story always seem to take a hit. With Rockstar you are getting curated missions packed with top level design any story telling. On the note of playing honorable and being a mass murderer in missions I have to say I disagree because Arthur comments on this throughout the game. When you sit down and have your therapy sessions with camp members he speaks about how he has been killing people in cold blood and how it eats him up inside because he doesnt know why hes even doing this anymore. All the times in the game you murderer tons of people you are either killing people who are scumbags themselves and you feel justified or you are killing people trying to kill you. You have to remember that Arthur is loyal to Dutch and they view themselves as the people being persecuted. The army was sent after them. They don't see them as American Soldiers, they look at it same as the Pinkertons. People trying to stop their way of life. Great spoilercast though you guys are killing it. Glad we can all share our thoughts in this generational game and one ofthe best peices of art we have had in the medium.

Brett Carlson

Hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah buddy! I’ve been waiting for this one!

Jason Hunter

Yeah, it spoils the entire campaign.

Colin Moriarty

Awesome, thank you for your feedback! Chris and I are recording the next episode in about an hour. =)

Colin Moriarty

The game came out two weeks ago!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that'd be cool. Highly unlikely, but cool.

Colin Moriarty

It'll be here when you're ready.

Colin Moriarty

I'll show you when you come to LA, ma. =)

Colin Moriarty

Does this episode include spoilers from the 2 epilogue chapters as well? I just wrapped up the main 6 chapters, but don't wanna spoil myself on the epilogues.

Brandon

I have zero interest in RDR2 (seem to be in the extreme minority here, lol), but I still found this episode really enjoyable. I also much preferred the format over the Spiderman one, so really good job on that front. Can't wait for regular SS this week, I'm sure it'll be juicy, lol.

FINALLLLLLLLY

Elias Salcedo

This popped up the day I finished the story, and I’m still wanting more. I would love to see the original rdr as dlc and have the whole story on ps4. I know that it won’t happen, but a man came hope.

Chris B

Dang, I wanna hear the reader questions as a lot didn’t have to do with story but I’m not done with the game yet :/ I’ll wait I guess haha

Brock Smith

Wow! This one made me want to ‘see’ what you’re talking about. Sounds absolutely wonderful for so many reasons. It totally intrigued me - you’ll need to show this to me and maybe see how I do with it. The ‘emotion and conscience’ that it evoked in both of you really means something. And let’s face it - I love me a cowboy. 😉 Well done, boys. 👍🏻

BettyAnn Moriarty

Thank you for listening! I'm glad you enjoyed our show. =)

Colin Moriarty

I think you mean "fellers." =)

Colin Moriarty

Wow. Sounds like you really loved it! Glad to hear it. =) Thanks for listening to our show!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, I was really looking forward to this podcast. Definitely my favorite game this year and was excited to hear you two talk about it in depth

Tanner Brant

Great episode fellas. I’ve been really looking forward to hearing your extended thoughts on this game and the wait was worth it. I had this game spoiled for me a week ago and despite that I’m still loving it so very much, flaws and all.

Craig Carter

There's so many words I can describe what I had witnessed and endured. RDR2 is the embodiment of a masterpiece. There is a reason Rockstar Games is the pinnacle of the gaming world. They don't make games, they make art. Hopefully 2026? there's a 3. Literally from the ground up they perfected every single detail and all those blood, sweat, and tears from the developers are shown. I deeply appreciate it. It's films at this point. The writing, acting, cinematography, and Directing rival current ones in the film industry today. This isn't game of the year...it's game of the decade. Great episode as always. Definitely love the standalone episodes for big things like these. Can't wait to see what's next.

Marcus Brown

Eh. I would veer away from spoilers here in the comments, just in case.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. It's the little things that really make this game shine.

Colin Moriarty

It's an awesome game. Truly.

Colin Moriarty

It'll be here when you're ready.

Colin Moriarty

Well, it's finally here. Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, don't listen yet.

Colin Moriarty

It'll be here when you're ready.

Colin Moriarty

Are these comments considered “spoiler free” or can we mention spoilers here.

Brian McHale

I absolutely love going through camp and hastily waking up Bill, Rev Swanson, or Uncle just to be like "Oh, I'm just teasing."

Quinn

That's kinda where I'm at. I don't want to finish it because it's so good. I also can't wait to dig into this episode. I tell ya, these first world problems of mine are something else. Arthur Morgan knows not these troubles.

Michael Renner

Cannot believe how huge the game is. Hopefully I get to this episode by Christmas. Excited to hear you guys liked it.

Robert Graham

I wanna listen to this so bad but after maybe 40 hours of playing i'm only on chapter 3. Its gonna be awhile. DOOOOPE game though!

Jeshua Anderson

I'm 51% through the story and taking my time with it so I'm unfortunately going to have to wait to listen... However, I can't wait until I'm done so I can hear both of your thoughts!!

Alex Gates

I'm not going to lie every time I saw a patreon email I was hoping it was this one lol.

Michael Schofield (making Audio Dramas)

Really looking forward to listening to this but I'm only on chapter 3 and don't want to heat spoilers just yet.

Mario Miranda

Would love to sit and listen to this but since it’s release I’m still in chapter 4 do not wanna spoil myself. Hope to finish it soon.
