Sacred Symbols, Episode 24: Our Most Anticipated Games of 2019

2018 is just about behind us, and 2019 lies just around the corner. To celebrate the coming year, we sat down and sifted through our most anticipated games of the next 12 months. Chris came packing 10 games; so did Colin. Through some very complicated mathematics (not really), we made a solid list of 16 games, cobbled together to represent our collective excitement. The rules? The games in question have to be playable on a piece of PlayStation hardware, and have to be aiming (at least somewhat) for a 2019 release date. That's it. So enough talk! Let's do this.

Sacred Symbols, Episode 24: Our Most Anticipated Games of 2019

Comments

Super late to comment on this but I’m going through all the episodes and I have to say this is a pretty bad take on the last of us 2 not being SJW at all. Nobody cares that Ellie is gay, they care it’s getting shoved in their faces. Having a trailer thats showing off combat and in the next frame it has Ellie shoving her tongue down some girls throat is shoving it in our faces. This is the only time I think I’ve suspected Colin’s personal relationships with Devs cloud what he thinks/says.

Slapndabass

Very true. Thanks for the response!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I wasn't as crazy about Uncharted 4 as others were, but remember: That game had a totally tortured development. TLoU 2 is going swimmingly. Big (potential) difference!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! That's a great compliment, and a high honor. I appreciate your support.

Colin Moriarty

“Meat on the bone” :^)

Sekani Adebimpe

I agree I am very excited for LOU 2 but I almost feel this might not have been needed. The LOU is the best game I have ever played personally. I just feel that if they just let it be it would always be something to remembered when looking back. Naughty dog is a great developer but I feel sometimes they go to long with their series. I think that Uncharted 4 was not needed and felt forced. How do you feel about this? BTW recent Patreon contributor (first comment). I love all the great content and have a blessed Holidays and New Year!

You’re the most value I’ve gotten for my monthly subscription. I enjoy your knowledge of games and candid opinion. I am glad you bounced back and created such a compelling roster of content. Thank you 😊

Thank you! Sadly, I've always spoken fast. I'm not sure it's gonna change. =)

Colin Moriarty

I'm so glad you got around to Spec Ops, Michael! It means a great deal to me that you gave it a go on my recommendation. It really is great.

Colin Moriarty

Colin Was Right.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much for being here, and for your support! I really do appreciate it! <3

Colin Moriarty

I'm doubting that he's in the main narrative, and I feel like the game is going to jump around timelines. We'll see.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. =) I'd call the madness a bit more than slight myself, but. =)

Colin Moriarty

Good to know!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support! I really appreciate you being here. It means a great deal to us. Going that far out isn't really worth it at this juncture (at least in my opinion) because the new consoles will launch that year, so we don't have nearly enough information to effectively answer the question. (And we're really only kidding about KH3. To each his own!)

Colin Moriarty

I am, too! There's apparently a third girl and some new scenes... we'll see how it all shakes out!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's a really tough Plat.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. =)

Colin Moriarty

Nice pulls! REmake 2 looks awesome. Really looking forward to it.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know a whole lot about either. I'll have to check in!

Colin Moriarty

Of course the core PlayStation fan knows that. Thing is, what will the casual fans think? Cross-platform fans? Spider-Man and God of War didn't sell gangbusters on the backs of hardcore Sony fans. Detroit, which sold two million copies, is a great example of a game that did.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not doubting the caliber of the game. I'm doubting the market for it. We'll see how it shakes out.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know what it all means.

Colin Moriarty

I don't believe it! We shall see.

Colin Moriarty

I'm just not really seeing it. Sorry.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe. Could be flashbacks. I wouldn't be surprised by any sort twists. I mean, they clearly had to mo-cap him for that trailer, for instance.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! Life is stressful because of this Patreon bullshit, but other than that, I'm hanging in there and doing the very best I can. I hope you're well, too!

Colin Moriarty

Write in on the thread and ask him!

Colin Moriarty

I think it came out at a weird time, too. It just slipped under the radar, but in reality, it was a huge commercial hit, enough for them that they're self-publishing the sequel, which is awesome to see. I'm hoping for the best for Days Gone, too.

Colin Moriarty

Exceptional episode. Colin and Chris have really hit their stride chemistry-wise. My only critique is that Colin talks like a mile a minute and I sometimes have to 30 second rewind to fully hear his wonderful insight 😅

James Pies

Hey Colin, I tweeted this to you but wanted to say it here as well. Difficult for me to fit my thoughts into a tweet. Just a few days back I began to slowly play through Spec Ops: The Line due to your praise of it. I haven't been an "active" in the gaming scene since 2016~. This game is a lot of fun and the story is top notch. My gaming skills have definitely suffered since 2016 though! It'd probably be slightly painful for anyone to watch. Great episode as always.

Michael Raymond

Oh hey Colin, you were right: Metro Exodus is gonna release a week early on Feb 15!

Steve Neeley

Just became a Patreon supporter again since before Colin got back into the gaming sphere and wow. There is so much great content coming out of CLS I’m just astounded that ya boy Colin M can create all of this for us by himself(aside from the great Cohosts). I’m very grateful for it all and so glad to have Colin’s voice back in the gaming world, thanks so much for all the hard work!

Justin Noviello

Props to Chris for mentioning Control. Looking forward to that. Of course TLoU2 is number 1. Wasn’t Joel already confirmed in the game? Think I remember Neil saying that he is in that camp also. My Top 10: 1. The Last of Us Part II 2. Ghosts of Tsushima 3. The Walking Dead Finale eps 3 & 4 4. The Outer Worlds 5. Far Cry: New Dawn 6. Control 7. Rage 2 8. Sekiro 9. Days Gone 10. Death Stranding

NeO JD

Oh good, glad he's not telling me to shut up. ha I just heard shut up David, and thought, "what the hell did I do?" lol

Not Sure

Srsly my fav podcast now, nothing better then hearing the slight madness.

Cuggles

I haven’t checked to see if anyone has said this yet because I’m lazy, but the Devil May Cry collection is indeed on PS4.

Michael Miller

I loved the structure of this, the point system was clever and super fun! Can't wait to see it again in the future (maybe even an episode of knockback if it fits the topic)

Daniel Schiffer

Colin and Chris - new subscriber here. Had been on the fence for a while but it truly is worth it. So thanks to you both for the content. Great list (minus the KH3 hatred. I totally understand your criticism, but I'm just a fucking nerd and the combat is really fun) I think you offhandedly jumped into games that were beyond 2019 in the Q&A portion - but I'd be interested to hear what you top 3-5 most anticipated games beyond 2019 are. I feel like CP2077 would have to be number one on anyone's list with maybe FF7 remake and Horizon: Zero Dawn sequel rounding out the top 3? Thoughts? Keep up the good work!

Luke Bernhard

This episode was a bunch of fun! Glad you guys never miss a week. I too, am very much looking forward to Catherine Full Body. Excited to see where they take the narrative this time!

Ryan Harvey

Wow I had somehow missed the Catherine news! That’s one of my top PS3 games. I bought it based on your IGN review, Colin. Loved it so much I got all the endings, and even attempted to platinum, but the arcade mini-game and randomly generated challenge levels kicked my ass.

Koray Savas

As always, great episode, guys!! "Ga-rappling hooks!!" lol

Jeff Pollard

I’m incredibly excited for the Resident Evil 2 remake because it looks graphically stunning and as though it plays like a more modern version Resident Evil 4 — my favourite of the RE series. Another game that is flying under people’s radars is ‘Judgment’ from the Yakuza team and Sega. I think the writing and world-building in the Yakuza franchise is just superb, and having the team that worked on that paired with TV celebrities from old Japanese crime dramas is a match made in heaven. Definitely can’t wait to see what that game’s narrative has in store.

Jake H.

2 games I'm looking forward to are Code Vein and Biomutant. Both look pretty dope but I haven't heard really any news on either game. 2019 might top this year's crop of amazing games

Eric Serrato

I dont think I agree with the Last of Us, Days Gone point. They are 2 very different games. Sure freakers and clickers but one is open world action rpg and Last of Us is a Linear narrative based experience. I dont think us as Sony fans or hardcore gamers at large care about games being similar in theme. Look how many FPS games sold gangbusters in the 360 era. How many Post Apocalyptic games are there and have sold well. A lot. Last of Us is aimed at the core Sony fan and we know the difference between the two.

Brett Carlson

I think everyone is off base on Anthem and it's going to take a lot by surprise. Everyone is expecting Destiny Colin, but that's a bit off base. Its has sole focus on PvE content with no PvP at launch unlike Division and Destiny. Destiny is more going for the MMO feeling where as Anthem is your traditional 4 player Co-op game like Ghost Recon Wildands. Let's everyone not have revisionist History due to Andromeda. Andromeda was made by a C tier studio that prior to that game had only done multiplayer work on Mass Effect 3. This is Biowares A-team. The last Bioware proper title we had was Inquisition which won GOTY for many outlets. Let's not Conflate EA being shitty with Biowares pedigree. Will there be shitty microtransactions for cosmetics. Yes. But I have faith in the team, especially with Casey Hudson back at in the fold.

Brett Carlson

Tom Sweeney (aka Mikey Moist Mouth) for Sacred Symbols main host, I’m sorry Colin, it had to happen

Tyson Williams

Hey Colin and Chris, I know this episode was recorded last week but I just wanted to say that a few days ago Norman Reedus actually said in a podcast that Death Stranding is supposed to come out in 2019 and this also lines up with what Hideo said a couple of weeks ago about it getting close to the polishing phase now

Myles Rivera

The idea that social justice hasn't influenced Naughty Dog's most recent games is insane. Maybe a case of a friend not being able to step back and look objectively as an unrelated person would? The listener who wrote in even mentioned it - their social media (including Neil's) has *specifically* said that social justice is influencing the development. There's no question. They straight up admit it (which is why fans are "riled up" as your listener says. It's still my most anticipated game of all time, but their politics absolutely heavily influence it.

Dave Carsley

Joel is definitely in TLoU: Part 2. In the E3 trailer (the kiss one), the very first person Ellie is talking to at the bar mentions that Ellie's "old man" gets very uptight about planning patrols when Ellie goes out on them. We know Ellie is gay and her dad isn't around, so it's clearly Joel.... Not only this but all the "panels" for part 2 include Ashley Johnson AND Troy Baker. Also, a look at Troy's social media indicates he's heavily involved in motion capture and voice over for this game.

Dave Carsley

My takeaways from this episode: -I'm ashamed that I forgot the Catherine remake is supposed to come out next year. -For Chris' sake, there needs to be a game which simultaneously has a grappling hook, jetpack, and telekinesis. -Wasn't expecting to be told to shut up. I accept the abuse but must respectfully refuse. ;-)

David Graham

Great episode, very solid overall list. Quick hits on the episode: I am in agreement of Last of Us II as #1 anticipated 2019 game, the Doom character is absolutely a great FPS protagonist (also perfectly blends feel of speed and power unlike any other FPS character), even though I have been with the series since it first came out and am looking forward to it, I cannot remotely tell you the reason why I enjoy Kingdom Hearts series so much. There are some interesting original characters in it and fun gameplay but now I think i'm just a addict to finish the storyline. Thanks fellas, hope you and yours are doing well this holiday season.

Barrett Boswell

Yeah, it was great insight on his part. I'm so confused why they aren't porting (or haven't yet ported) the original!

Colin Moriarty

I'm really looking forward to it, too.

Colin Moriarty

We shall see! I thought people were feeling the alpha? I'm not speaking to its quality as much as I'm speaking to it being released among a bunch of other like-minded games.

Colin Moriarty

You're very welcome. Thank you for listening!

Colin Moriarty

I'm afraid to even ask what that is.

Colin Moriarty

I hope Chris got a chance to play Psi-Ops back in the day. Really fun shooter revolving around psychic powers.

Korey Burns

Great episode as always! Colin, I'm so happy you keep bringing up Dying Light. I spent a weekend in college playing through it and it was one of the only games I've played this whole generation that had just the right amount of content. I think people were sick of zombie games at the time or something. I loved that it was set in fictional Turkey as well because it was an exotic and exciting location for an open world game. As far as next year goes, my most anticipated game is easily Resident Evil 2 Remake. Like Chris I have never played the original. Just to keep this short, Rage 2, Doom Eternal and King of Cards all rank high on my list as well. I'm curious about Anthem and I really hope Days Gone is good and sells well so we don't see Bend get shut down.

Jimmy Champane

Chris was dead on about Wolfenstein 2. It really did feel like it wanted you to play it like Doom, but would kick your ass the second you tried. As for Rage, I’m happy to see it back. I got the Plat for the original, and it was a little rough around the edges, but I thought they were onto something with it. Really looking forward to the sequel. Thanks for another great episode!

Richard Duflo

I agree with you both about all the curiosity surrounding Days Gone. I can’t wait to see how that game turns out. It’s going to be very interesting. I’ll definitely play it because I believe in it.

Will Hahn

Hey Colin and Chris, I agree with Chris that Anthem is gonna not be good. They started their alpha in November, with the game due to release in Feb it just does not look good, especially with how MMO dev cycles go. As much as I want the game to be good, I think its going to be a very empty experience. Four games i'm looking forward to this year: Days Gone, Sekiro: Shadows die Twice, Code Vein, and The Outer Worlds by Obsidian!

Kenneth Oms

This is such a nice reprieve from studying for finals and grinding out papers, thanks as always Colin and Chris!

My most anticipated game of next year is big chungus for ps4
