KnockBack, Episode 50: Childhood Pets

For many children, one of growing up's great traditions is having a pet or two. (Or maybe even five or 10.) This episode of KnockBack revolves around our memories of the pets we grew up with, our many cats, our rabbits, and even a scorpion named Wellington. We also solicited a ton of entries from the audience, and go through your pet stories, too. What did these animals mean to all of us? How did they shape our adolescent and teen years? And what kind of funny, sad and meaningful stories about these creatures have we carried through to today?

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Indeed!

Joseph Ady

Great episode guys!

Joe B

That's insane. Think he was miserable?

Colin Moriarty

No joke, had a gold fish I won at the fair that lived for 10 years.

Daisy

You know how it be

The Chicken Chaser

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that. But 17 is a long life!

Colin Moriarty

Well, it's funny and sad, both.

Colin Moriarty

This is amazing. His name is I Chose Hamture. Love it.

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, I love boxers. We have six at my house and ironically one of them is also named Rocky. He’s a big boy but not as big as my son Drogo.

The Chicken Chaser

Thanks for sharing all of these memories. I just listened to the podcast this morning and then soon after my mom called me and told me her 17 year old cat, who we got when I was 13, died during the night last night. She seems to have gone peacefully and has left us with a lot of great memories. At times like these I recall a quote from Dr. Seuss: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Kevin Sullivan

Fuck dude. This is going to be a very somber and nostalgic episode.

Andrew

https://youtu.be/XMEkmdUHI_c Colin, this mad man is making an underwater city for hamsters. It’s called Hampture. Please shout him out in your Knockback episode about Bioshock.

Daddy Dilkers

Dr. Dooher was the one that told us of the Springer Spaniel and how wonderful they are, especially with children. I couldn’t convince dad. I think it must have stemmed from the time Uncle mike brought over a Great Dane that I fell in love with. Dagan was maybe a year or two old. This dog was a gentle giant. Dagan could have used him as a horse! Dad said we couldn’t afford to feed him. 🤔🙄😂 Eh... maybe he was right but I would have felt super safe with that dog around.

For Wellington! Also, its a small thing but im a relatively new patreon subscriber and i love that you respond. You (and the others in here) make this feel like a real community, its great! Thank you!

Andrew Collins

Please do. Do it for Wellington.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. That's awesome. Sounds smart!

Colin Moriarty

^_~

Colin Moriarty

Lolie. =D

Colin Moriarty

To each his own, I say! I love cats and dogs both, but man... Lola has turned me into a Boston Terrier fan for life.

Colin Moriarty

20 years old?! That thing's seen some shit.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I've been watching it. She's fucking adorable. I love her attitude.

Colin Moriarty

...that's what she said.

Colin Moriarty

I loved this episode but it was very bitter sweet. Gonna go hug my animals now

Andrew Collins

My girlfriend has a springer spaniel and man that dog is awesome. High energy, opens doors, gets ice from the fridge, and loves to swim. I love going back to Florida just to spend time with that dog.

Kenneth Oms

Slinky Girl! it is almost as if you are a 311 fan..

Kenny Gutzler

I love Lola and Kiki but... I adored my kittens. I miss them...so I totally get it.

BettyAnn Moriarty

It’s so true... 😢

BettyAnn Moriarty

I just finished listening to this at work. I'm so happy you have Lola, Colin, but I'm a bit of the opposite. Grew up a dog person, but I find that I love cats so much more now. My ex-girlfriend from 2012-2016 was living with me and she had a cat named Lucy and even though we broke up and she moved to California, I got to keep Lucy and she's the light of my life.

James Kinslow III

Awesome topic, I've got a 20 year old leopard gecko and other various reptiles. The experience motivated me to pursue a career in zookeeping. Wish I would have chimed in before the podcast was recorded. I'll use it as a "Why do we fall Bruce?" moment.

Steven Greene

The Japanese woman who wrote the book on organization you refer to in this episode now has her own Netflix show. Marie Kondo, Tidying Up. In case you somehow haven't heard or seen the memes by now. It's pretty great

Vincent DePalma

I came for Chun Li

Tyson Williams

My wife had the same situation when we first got together. She had gotten a black cat she thought was a female and named her Elvira. Well, one day she's petting the cat and realizes it has nuts. Elvira became Ira that day. :) If you ever need to sex a kitten, look at their posterior. If it looks like a colon (:) it's male. If it looks like an upside down exclamation point, it's a female.

Jason Stafford

Dude, thats crazy that you had a male cat that you thought was female. I had the exact same experience as a kid. We got this cat when I was like 14 and we named "her" Precious. It only had 3.5 legs, it was born like that and it was the cutest thing, even played fetch. But, we got him from my grandpa, who was the head of animal control in my hometwon, so we took his word for it. Fast forward a few weeks or whatever and one of my childhood friends comes over, we're playing games, he sees the cat and goes, "Dude, Precious has balls." My Mom picked him up and sure enough he did. We promptly had to change the appointment to have Precious spayed.

Nate McKinney

Always an emotional topic especially for pets you have for a long time then they pass away. It’s like losing a friend/family member.

Brandon Soto

Good ol' Kingler. Now that I don't edit KnockBack anymore, I'm totally forgetting what we even talked about. This episode was super funny.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for helping allow us to do the show! Can't believe it's been almost a year for KnockBack. Very cool!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! I had a hermit crab named Kingler while I was in high school. I went to feed him one day and he was just gone. Never found him. I thought for sure I’d stumble on his shell eventually, but nope. Dagan’s story about freeing the rabbit was great! I was dying laughing LOL

Richard Duflo

About to dive in. Can't believe we've hit episode 50 already! Thanks for all your effort! You and everyone in the CLS family bring so much enjoyment into our lives!

Kyle Goodrich

Thank you. That was indeed an awesome story. =)

Colin Moriarty

Great episode. The Story of Dagan trying to spring that rabbit was hilarious

Tanner Brant

Awesome name. And RIP.

Colin Moriarty

Agreed. =) Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

It goes as long as it needs to go!

Colin Moriarty

Episode 50!!! Wooo!!! Great Episode. I've only had one pet in my life and that was a Pitbull named 2Pac. Had him since he was a pup till he passed of old age when I was 15. Pets will always be remembered.

Marcus Brown

I look forward to listening to this tonight at work! Pets are so wonderful 😺

James Kinslow III

A podcast almost 2 hours in length about childhood pets.. I’ll allow it
