KnockBack, Episode 197: Kill Bill (Volume 1)

If the blood-fueled havoc of Kill Bill reminds us anything, it's that "revenge is never a straight line." Quentin Tarantino's 2003 flick -- his fourth written-and-directed film -- was originally intended to be one long, four hour-ish movie, but they wisely split it in two. Thus, in Volume 1, we're left to consume the first half of the story, all about a nameless Bride fueled by a mother's rage. Full of memorable characters and performances, exceptional cinematography, an epic soundtrack and score, and a full embrace of its nerdy and sometimes-obscure influences, Kill Bill: Volume 1 is a must-see movie for its wonderful style alone. So listen to the podcast, and let us know what you think. If you still feel raw about it, we'll be waiting.

What an incredible episode guys! I had goosebumps the entire time Dagan was recalling the Hanzo scene. I have seen both volumes many many times but haven’t seen them in a long time. I think it’s definitely time to rewatch them.

Bastian Gutierrez

I thought Dagan might mention this when the discussion reached Gogo's character, but she was casted for the role after Tarantino saw her performance in Fukasaku's 2000 flick Battle Royale -- which makes sense as she plays a seemingly innocent character with a violent side.

I hope he can't stay away. =)

We'll get to all of them. =)

Great episode Col. As for QT retiring it’s true. He talked about it when he was on Joe Rogan. He wants to leave while on the top, and he has a kid now that he wants to spend time with.

I’ve listened to all the Knock Backs of the QT movies. I hope you guys get to Hateful Eight. I think it’s my favorite endings of all his movies. Good pod and looking forward to hearing part 2.

Jeremy Craves

Yeah, this ain't for kids. Wise! =)

Love this movie, easily one of my most influential pieces of media. I remember browsing Blockbuster when I was a kid and seeing Kill Bill on the shelf. Something about the cover was so striking and badass, the jumpsuit, the katana, the strong yellow cover. It was so cool, but I wasn't allowed to rent it because my mom thought it would he too violent (she was probably right, I was like 8). That movie was my forbidden fruit for years until I finally saw it when I was a teenager. It was worth the wait.
