Sacred Symbols+, Episode 138: Kena Bridge of Spirits Review Discussion and Spoilercast

Back in September, Ember Lab's very first game -- Kena: Bridge of Spirits -- launched on PS4 and PS5. As a timed console exclusive, Kena filled (and continues to fill) an important gap in the fall and winter lineup on Sony's hardware, and the good news is that it's doing so ably, because Kena is great. Stylish, charming, deep, and fun to play, this PlayStation 2 era-inspired 3D action-platformer can be the start of something special, or it could be a one-off. Either way, it's absolutely worthy of your time and attention, which is why I (Colin!) wanted to sit down and talk about it.

I couldn't do that, I need to hear during boss fights.

Pro Tip: If you're struggling with any of the bosses, retry the battle with the volume off. Most of the anxiety you experience, which causes you to make mistakes, is caused by the swelling of the music and growling sound effects. So take that element away and you should become more successful. Don't do this right away (so that you can still experience the moment), but if you are trying over & over without success -- just mute your television or take off your headphones. This tip can apply to any game obviously.

Col, really loved this game and enjoyed your commentary on it. Thank you for putting this out - loving the end-of-year spoilercast onslaught and so pumped for your GOTY discussions.

Really great episode Colin! I absolutely adored this game and thought you summed up exactly what made it such a joyful experience from the world to the characters. It certainly had some issues and perhaps it is my nostalgia for these types of games from the PS2/Gamecube era days, but this game was a treat and I'm excited for their next title!

Thank you for doing this solo, it's really appreciated. I loved Kena a lot, it was a lovely throw back in some ways but felt fresh and and me hooked from start to finish. I do think that it's needlessly hard at points for a game of its type but overall it's fantastic.

Just ordered it off the strength of this episode. Can't wait to play it once I've finished Metro Exodus!
