Defining Duke Ultimate, Episode 44: Going To The Big Screen

Often times, video games and movies/TV have been best left separate. Both mediums failed to respect the source material provided whether it be a rushed movie tie-in game or a movie based off a game that never made sense to begin with. In recent years, we have spotted an uptick across the board in the collaboration of these two avenues of entertainment. Whether it is The Witcher that brought its now 6 year old game to new heights that no amount of marketing or game awards could bring it to or an original take like Arcane which allows stagnant brands to go wide, things are indeed changing. What are the repercussions of marrying movies and games? What of long regarded RPG series like Mass Effect and Fallout where the game counterpart heavily accounts player agency? With so many questions, it is time for a discussion on the future of these two that continue to intertwine.

Excuse me, Dukes, but that "someone" who suggested First Contact war, or at least the one who did it first and got a response from Mr. Gaider, was me, one of your Patrons. Just sayin'. 😜

I like your rephrased point a lot! Thanks for the clarification.

Great question! I think it’s because of price, the social allure (games can do this too in fairness), ability to capture a zeitgeist more often, and revenue generated. I admittedly didn’t factor in mobile gaming, so that’s a great point! I think the better wording for me would’ve been: “Games have more to gain from movies than movies have to gain from games.” I still kinda said that, but not exactly. Hope this helps!

I think the better move with the fallout tv show, I don’t think it will be about a sole survivor but instead a visual of the Great War or how the annex of Mexico and Canada, something with a set start and end that would also be new for the gamers

The numbers released by Netflix don't match at all with what Parrot Analytics is saying about Arcane.

Matty, just for clarification by what metric do you consider movies to be bigger than games? The industry itself makes more than hollywood, television, and music. Then when accounting for mobile there are billions of people who play video games. I'm not saying "you are wrong," but I am trying to understand your thinking.
