Sacred Symbols+, Episode 143: Award Shows Are Failing Us

Subjectivity brings with it a whole host of inherent quarrels. Indeed, fundamental to subjectivity is an understanding of the texture and nuance of things. In other words, there really isn't a right or wrong answer, because video games aren't math. Yet, in this industry, we're endlessly bombarded with scores and awards and this and that, all of which suggest otherwise. In the shadow of this year's Game Awards, it's all a little perplexing, especially with some notable absences on the Game of the Year roster. To discuss how award shows (and all other manner of making subjectivity objective) are hurting the games industry, I (Colin!) grabbed MrMattyPlays (a Duke!) to chat. Is it time games are treated like the ultimate entertainment medium they are? Or should we continue to chase 20th century trends and ideals, no matter the cost?

Can someone explain to me what happened with Colin and that “random YouTuber” who deleted the video?

Mackenzie

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

I agree. He's excellent.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah just gotta hop on with some more Matty praise here. The kid is a genius. Love this combo.

P Wolly

Matt has absolutely came into his own, Colin great catch, he has became an absolute asset

Chris Dell

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Colin and Matty eps are definitely a huge favorite. LOVE seeing it.

Giovanni D'Amico

Great podcast once again. Good vibe and interaction between Matty and Colin, easy to listen to.

Bart Van Geert

Agreed

Raymond Stuart

At the end of the day, I think we need to embrace the inherent subjectivity of the industry.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

More Colin and Matty eps. Great stuff.

I also view most video game “news” websites as just larger content creators. Everyone is chasing clicks and views. That’s why every “news” website publishes the exact same articles and why most content creators basically repeat the same news that the websites cover. It’s all an algorithm; they just have a larger platform with greater ability to sell ads. But ultimately everyone is chasing clicks and views that generate revenue or that support Patreon or ad revenue.

Raymond Stuart

I really don’t like when we immediately discredit others because their views are different than our own. Collin loved Far Cry 6. But it was panned by Matty and many outlets. I loved it. Matty famously hates on Deathloop but it was largely loved by most. Who is right? Ultimately, have fun playing games. We need to stop worrying about whether others agree with us. We need to stop judging people as incompetent just because they actually had fun playing a game we didn’t like or didn’t think was a good game. I think it’s been a great year of games. Xbox is killing it. PlayStation has had some strong exclusives but maybe not blockbusters. But in the end, we should cheer people on finding enjoyment in games. I think that’s what TGA tries to capture.

Raymond Stuart

I suppose, yes. =)

Colin Moriarty

Great episode. You guys mentioned DICE & the BAFTA's as perhaps good industry awards, which I tend to agree with. Would you consider GDC part of this club too? I always thought they were developer voted. Peace.

OTTAPPS

Hahaha.

Colin Moriarty

great episode bro. I had to pause to go check out this YouTuber you had a discussion with. The thumbnails people made are hilarious lol there’s one of you with laser eyes melting him into a pile of salt

Kenneth Oms

I am happy for you.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it's the E3 aspect that's relevant to all of us.

Colin Moriarty

Could be a cool way to structure it!

Colin Moriarty

Oh dear.

Colin Moriarty

I liked it a lot, personally.

Colin Moriarty

I like the game awards.

There’s No I in LLC

Great listen. I generally like the game awards, but they themselves don’t seem to value the actual awards, as was seen by how quick they got through them last year. I do enjoy my Xmas e3. I like Jez Corden’s idea that the critics, devs and players should all have equal weighting in their votes and may address some of the issues you guys highlighted.

Andrew McGregor

I love the idea of you guys talking about what you were playing at different points in the year. Sounds interesting, and also will help highlight games some of us may have missed or forgotten about.

Heather Edwards

Free bj’s for the CDC!

Jackie Rheu

I always feel like I'm on an island whenever I hear people discuss Fallen Order, I felt the game was just okay but had crazy performance problems that impacted gameplay and story, meanwhile everyone talks about it being one of the better Star Wars games. They didn't even fix all of the issues with the next gen patch for it, audio/dialogue still desyncs. I'll take Force Unleashed over Fallen Order any day, game was more fun to play and far more stable Anyways, thanks for the great show!

The Late Nate

The CRPG scene is totally foreign to me. This is the point, I suppose!

Colin Moriarty

Hey guys thanks for a great hour to pass time at work with. As I listened to the episode I agreed with the sense that I dont really care about who wins or loses GOTY but the announcements always get me excited. (I think next year is going to be insane for games btw). For me personally I think the biggest snub is the CRPG Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous. It has an insane amount of content, an amazing narrative, infinite character builds, and a good bit of replayability. Among the CRPG community it's been in several discussions for one of the best in the genre, but with how long the game is and the barrier to entry, it ultimately wont win or be put up for any award this year, which is a shame for devs. Hopefully some of the small games that deserve a mention next year dont get swallowed up by the huge games coming out. Thanks as always for the great content!

BrandonA

It was surprising when that won!

Colin Moriarty

Sekiro is the best game of the year award winner! It's the outlier since it's difficult game and not reviewer friendly.

Damien Phoenix

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Soon.

Colin Moriarty

If you feel that way, it's unfortunately trending in the opposite direction.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

I don't know anything about that, truth be told.

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

Thankful.

Stephen Forgione

Glad to see my Duke question about the VGAs led to this entire episode lmao

OCEL0T

Aw i was hoping this would be doki doki. But having matty on brings a smile to one's face

Guns vs Kittens

Thank you for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Matt is absolutely right, it's a popularity contest. I'm reminded when Justin Beiber didn't win the Grammy for best new artist. They gave it to who they felt was the best new artist, not the most popular.

Jeremy Seal

I think Keighley’s game awards become more Irrelevant with each passing year. People want to see their favorite game win, which is why Ghost Of Tsusima won player’s choice last year, and not TLOU2, because Ghost was more popular among players. If people want to know what the reveals were, they can look up an article about what was revealed and then look up trailers on youtube.

Trevor Myers

The amount of content you all produce is very much appreciated! Thanks for the hard work!

Tonys_Always_Write

As always Matty and Colin are my favorite host combo, love your chemistry together and hope for much more episodes together. Keep up the amazing quality

Returnal is a much more interesting option than either PS5 exclusive chosen.

Colin Moriarty

Nothing like finishing the Friday episode of sacred symbols only to find that sacred symbols plus has been uploaded mere moments before. You guys are the best!

Jeremiah

I know it's an outlier opinion when faced with what TGA put up as options, but my GotY is still Returnal. And I skipped every single eSports category when I did the viewer voting.
