Sacred Symbols+, Episode 168: Fighting Frenzy

We like to be as all-encompassing as possible here on Sacred Symbols. PlayStation, after all, is a mighty large topic. Yet -- between the three of us -- there are some games and genres that slip through the cracks. In our continuing effort to ameliorate that issue, I (Colin) invited fighting game expert Vince Ingenito back to the show. Now, Vince and I worked at IGN together, and, as I say on the show, there's no one I've ever met who knows even half as much about the genre as him. So he is the perfect guest for today, as we go through the recent Street Fighter 6 announcement and wonder about future Capcom exclusivity, chronicle the steady brilliance of arguably the genre's brightest talent in Arc System Works, touch on what's going on over in the land of SNK, and so much more. If you like fighting games, you're gonna love this episode of +. It's really that simple.

Thank you! We'll have him back.

Colin Moriarty

Glad to hear it. <3

Colin Moriarty

Even as a non-fighting game fan I loved this episode. The part of Vince’s first SS+ that stuck with me the most is when he said he would do anything to be able to get back into games media. Thank you Colin for giving him that ability. I would love for you to give him even more possible content with LSM.

Dylan Michael

Good to hear Vince’s voice, brings back nostalgia for me back in highschool listening to beyond lol

DeucesBruh

He has me kinda minding an itch, as well.

Colin Moriarty

Bushido Blade drove me nuts, personally.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, very cool. =)

Colin Moriarty

Me too. =)

Colin Moriarty

We'll have him back, no doubt.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. Glad to have him back talking games.

Colin Moriarty

...I did!

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin, hope you’re have a good one. Always great to see Vince on the show, definitely missed him in the industry.

Pisqueak

Bring Vince back!

David Rivera

Fighting games are something that my buddies and I from childhood have honestly bonded over more so than any other genre. Hearing Vince’s passion about this genre really brought a smile to my face. I would love to hear him as the “Fighting Game” correspondent in the Sacred Symbols community. Great listen as always, gents.

Mr. MacDeadly

I love hearing Vince geek out about games again

Jack Sibert

Evil Zone is one of those games that I’ve got and played loads that I’ve never heard anyone else talk about! Glad it came up, even if it was just a brief mention.

Cat Charlie

This was so good. Appreciated that you guys gave a shout out to the weird fighting games of the PS1 era. I felt an orphan after Bushido Blade and only recently have been able to play a game in the same spirit with Hellish Quart in the PC. Was wandering if Vince had experience with this or other unconventional fighting games. Would love to discover more.

Jefferson Souza

Great to hear Vince back on the show. His enthusiasm is contagious. He almost, Almost! Got me to go back and check out some fighting games, but I've broken enough controllers in my lifetime already. His knowledge and insight into the fighting game genre is substantial and it would be nice to see him return again in the future.

Nick

Indeed!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Sprites would be nice!

Colin Moriarty

Indeed. I wanted to make sure that happened.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Not sure where he'd fit, but he'll be back.

Colin Moriarty

Yes, should be interesting!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it's just not a genre a lot of people can speak about like this.

Colin Moriarty

We will.

Colin Moriarty

It's my pleasure to do so. Thank you for your support.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

He's got a lot of passion, for sure!

Colin Moriarty

We will have him back, yes.

Colin Moriarty

The gaming community needs passionate people like Vince. Such an awesome episode. I have never touched a fighting game.

Abel

Man we gotta have Vince on more often the man knows his video games

Craig Carter

Great having Vince back on

Dan Morgan

Nice to hear Vince again, any show with him or Marty on was a good listen back in the day.

Joshua Brown

I am nervous with SF6 and wish it would be sprite based graphics. Doubt it since many say that's too expensive and time consuming. If the game is to be realistic then it should go all the way unlike SFv. The game absolutely needs to have rollback netcode. Capcom makes me scratch my head at times on fighting games in the decisions made. Just make a Capcom vs Capcom with a 3 player tag team mechanic.

Derek Alcott

Nice to have Vince back just talking games…

Napoleon in Rags

Glad to see you got Vince back on and I'm definitely looking forward to listing to the episode. Keep up the great work.

Just Josh

Make Vince a regular!

Korey Beaver

If I was you, I’d go for DNF Duel first when it comes out. Much smoother learning curve since it’s not as mechanically (physical inputs) demanding, and it’s just plain fun.

Drew Sleezer

It’s nice hearing someone as passionate as me about fighting games. I cannot wait for riot’s showing with project L.

Drew Sleezer

Granted, I'm not a fighting game fan, but I was aware of the 'standardized hardware' thing that always prevented PC, so major props to Vince for bringing that up. The only thing I have to add, and Vince probably knows this and simply forgot on the spot, is that Steam Deck will output a video signal via USB-C up to 4K120. Fighting games have been notoriously easy to run on lower end hardware so I actually would not be shocked to see Steam Deck become defacto hardware. The biggest issue might actually be Sony. Them basically owning Evo means we're probably looking at PS5s at that tournament. I don't know enough about fighting games, but I do know some things about hardware. I'm imagining a scenario where PS5 and Steam Deck run the game at a flawless 60fps, and both support the same fight sticks. However, one or the other outputs frames slightly faster or has slightly lower input lag, and all on the same display/TV. Surely then the fighters would choose to train on the hardware they will be using in tournament, right? P.S. As an old listener to Beyond and kf it's really nice to see Vince back in his groove. Outside of him, I start falling asleep when I hear someone talk about fighting games.

Ealia Staroverov

Nice to see Vince is back! Keeping bringing him back whenever you can!

Will Hahn

I'm not a big fighting game fan, but I've missed Vince so much that I am listening to support both him/LSM. Thank you Colin for providing a place for acceptance and forgiveness. You make supporting you with my dollar very easy to do. I hope to hear from him more in the future!

Bambi_Cobblestone

Damn He was lookin forward to his Elden Ring stream. Its too bad his whole setup imploded on itself on stream.

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

Damn vince know his stuff

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

This episode is making me want to install some arcsys games. I remember the first time I saw BlazBlue I was like :o and then db fighterz came out and blew my mind, even though I'm terrible at it.

brody_low

Sounds interesting.

Colin Moriarty

I'm doing my part. =)

Colin Moriarty

Me too.

Colin Moriarty

Evil Zone was awesome! I still have it. All of the attacks were done with triangle and a direction. Only guard was on square.

Carlos Quintanilla

Vince is too good to waste his talents in a coffee shop. Rooting for him to get back in the industry.

Brandon Soto

Great episode I love the passion Vince brought especially since fighting games is his bread and butter. Happy that he gets to enjoy/talk about games still.

Kenneth Oms

Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

Great to see and hear Vince talking about video games again. Thank you, Colin.

Anthony A.
