Sacred Symbols, Episode 194: Stunning Wizardry

After much waiting, we've finally been treated to a deep-dive into Hogwarts Legacy, the controversial Harry Potter-aligned game slated to launch on PS4 and PS5 later this year. Developed by one-time Disney outfit Avalanche, Hogwarts Legacy is -- in a word -- ambitious. Like, really ambitious. And it looks awesome. So let's discuss. Plus: News! The very Supermassive-2K title we told you was coming on this show a month or two ago, The Quarry, has been announced, while FromSoft's Elden Ring is absolutely obliterating the sales chart. Konami keeps hinting at Silent Hill's comeback, while Dead Space Remake gets a release window, Moss 2 is right around the corner on PSVR, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is the in-process failure of Microsoft's studio The Initiative a sign of Xbox's inability to manage their teams? Is Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura overrated? How do we find the recent GTA-related rumors about where the new game may take place? Are we going to institute a No Fly Zone over the Keebler Elves' forest?

How could you guys talk that long about the Pulse headset and not mention that it is capable of 3D sound, which entails 100 channels(directions) for audio. This is why Horizon and many other triple A games seem to have that extra little something when using the Pulse headset. Shameless Sony plug finished.

Greg Hommel

Ok that's fair, everyone needs to stop being defaults then.

Pace

He's not the only one making these claims.

Colin Moriarty

I've tried three times. Not gonna happen.

Colin Moriarty

The world is your oyster.

Colin Moriarty

It's a joke.

Colin Moriarty

Perhaps so.

Colin Moriarty

I think it needs to be said that Chris is being a little unfair about targeting Assassins Creed's style of open world with out acknowledging the changes thy made with Exploration mode thats been added to the series back in 2018 with Odysee. In exploration mode you dont get a marker put on the map and you have to discover the locations in the regions by the clues. On top of that you can set your map legend and remove icons you dont want to see plus turn off any unwanted hud elements in the settings. They went through great lenghts to cater to people who want more natural un aided exploration experience and yet I never hear anyone talk about it. Even Horizon has these features and an exploration mode too. My dude Chris stop being a default explore the settings to play the game the way you want to play.

Colin, I despised FF15 for the the longest as well when I first played it. I took a 3 year break and came back to it and approached it without having any expectations of what I thought a Final Fantasy game should be. It wasn’t so bad after all. It wasn’t “Great”, but I would say decent.

aright laaaads!!!!! here im chewin on a double cheeseburger, large fries, large coke, taking a well earned break from ER! The only question that i have is... whats for dessert? i have ice cream,. chocolate and scooby dooby ice lollies. and im ireland. and im high.

100% not genuine, just a reoccurring gag on the show

@Jake I don't disagree with the majority of the things you stated. But Colin is inferring that, because most people would generally agree with her, her statements are therefore not transphobic and must be the truth. This is a pretty common logical fallacy. I'd wager if you were to ask trans people (the people being discriminated against), most would say her statements are indeed transphobic. Colin is invalidating these arguments just because the people making them may be in the minority. A hilariously stereotypical conservative thing to do. I say "glorifying" specifically because I've been listening to Sacred Symbols for 2ish years now and, from what I recall, never heard Colin praise a feminist or FeminismTM. Now, suddenly, when JK says some transphobic bullshit, he goes out of his way to commend her for her "bravery" and speaking out as a "feminist" multiple times. Odd coincidence. He also says she has "everything to lose" when she's a billionaire with millions of followers. She has the power to influence elections with who she donates to that could lead trans people to literally lose their rights, or at least not gain the rights already denied to them (in Britain). She doesn't need people defending her against 1000% valid criticism, especially when they otherwise don't give a shit. The death threats though -yikes. I also say "glorifying" because Colin went out of his way to interrupt Chris and Dustin to literally CHANT that Rowling never said anything transphobic to begin with and to challenge people to convince him otherwise. This totally shut down any counterargument Chris/Dustin could've made. I alluded to this in my previous comment but where's the argument against these outlets (like KindaFunny) refusing to cover the HP game when the devs appear to be making choices that distinctly DEFY Rowling's views? That these outlets are hypocritically boycotting a game that seems to be attempting to be anti-transphobic? What makes me cranky is hearing the same shit-tier twitter hot takes against trans people repeated in a video game podcast I otherwise love 99.9% of the time.

Glendelman

@Gordon you could potentially say this about racism, ableism, classism, antisemitism, homophobia, etc. Truthfully it's not that hard to spot, just ask any trans person

Glendelman

Damn, what was all the negativity around Europe about? Is that some kind of inside joke? 🤷‍♂️

Zorro

RE: GTA6 being multiple cities... I think Dustin is right with regards to the multiplayer component, but the only way that I can see the single player working with multiple cities is if they keep the character switching mechanic from GTA5. So the selected character would only complete missions in their respective city. Then, of course, in the final mission these characters would all join together for the big heist. I think this is the only way that I could tolerate a multi-city approach to the game.

Kevin Cooper

Dustin... Vid-Devil would just be porn. Here is a link on how to turn off Parental Controls on your phone: https://www.wikihow.com/Turn-Off-Parental-Controls ;-)

Kevin Cooper

I'm gonna talk about whatever I want, however I want to talk about it, because this is my show. That said, I do appreciate your feedback, and you're always welcome to provide it.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for the tips.

Colin Moriarty

JK Rowling is objectively an incredibly successful author. One of the most successful female authors ever. I don't think harry potter is very well written, but I can acknowledge her commercial success and her millions of fans. Not sure how stating this is "glorifying" her. Saying "most people agree with her" isn't saying people literally people heard her statement and endorse it. Globally, It is saying most people share her views. Which is true, take a look at polls and global laws. Sorry it makes you so cranky.

James Good

Curious that you would use "objective transphobia" when no one can seem to agree on what constitutes transportation to begin with.

DontCallMeFlash

Colin's insistence of glorifying JK Rowling continues to be incredibly annoying, although I'm glad this latest recital was reduced to about 90 seconds. But "part of her survival ... is that most people agree with her" is genuinely such a baffling statement. MOST people either have no idea or just don't care. It's incredibly telling that you would make such a declarative statement like this. No one is pretending when they take offense to JK's statements. Sam Crosse(?) makes an excellent point (although perhaps unintentionally) about the addition of gender options in the character creator. This and the departure of Troy Leavitt paint a decent picture that this game could be intended to stand directly against Rowling's objectively transphobic views. Using the logic that not doing side quests in open world games means you don't like open world games(???) then it stands to reason this game wasn't made for people like you. Can you not bring up the same tired old shtick every time this game gets mentioned?

Glendelman

Colin, glad you gave Elden Ring a try. I’d like to offer 3 tips to help get you going since the walkthroughs out there are basically the equivalent to having your balls ran over by a Hyundai. Don’t want to come off like I’m suggesting how to play the game or anything, just want to give you an initial push in the right direction because I believe that the first bit of the game is the hardest. First, in the early game you should try heading South of Limgrave across a bridge to The Weeping Peninsula. It’s pretty low level with lots of rewards to find and places to explore. Even a big fort with a cool boss and weapon at its southernmost point. Second, you mentioned not knowing where to go to find the Godrick boss. Past the Storm Gate, where you had a giant troll drop down on you and ran through, you just keep following that road. It takes you right to Stormveil Castle. Maybe you’ve found it, but based off of what you said I just wanted to touch on it. Lastly, you actually don’t even have to go through Stormveil Castle. You can jump off the bridge that’s right next to it on its East side and go around the castle entirely to get to the next large area, Liurnia. I explored a bit of Liurnia before I killed Godrick. Hope this helps and it doesn’t come off in a FromSoft elitist kind of way. Hope the game clicks with you but if not, you do you like always king 👑
