KnockBack, Episode 215: Toy Story

While Toy Story wasn't the first 3D animated offering, it was certainly the film that proved the technique viable, desirable, and even preferable to the old ways of doing things. It also made a boatload of money, which never hurts. When it launched in theaters in late 1995, Toy Story left audiences enamored with its characters, blown-away by its visuals, and instantaneously hungry for more (it would take four years for more to arrive). At a brisk 80 minutes, Toy Story doesn't linger. Instead, it entertains relentlessly, packing amazing voice acting (Tom Hanks and Tim Allen!) and, at that point in time, the most sophisticated computer graphics the world had ever seen. Remember: This is a year -before- Super Mario 64 came out. It's really quite amazing, when you think about it. So -- as we're wont to do on this show -- we gush about Toy Story for well over two hours, get into its deep and winding history, what it means to animation and society alike, and the heavy influence it would play on entertainment, even two and a half decades-plus later. As usual, it doesn't hurt having an Emmy Award-winning animator co-hosting this show...

KnockBack, Episode 215: Toy Story

Comments

Shout out to Knockback. I’m waiting for Duke to upload so in the meantime I’m going back to the awesome backlog of episodes I missed. These episodes are timeless 🙌

Michael Mashpotato

Interestingly enough, the concept of becoming irrelevant and being replaced actually comes back for woody in Toy Story 4.

TROTMAC96

I think those baseball T's real name is "Raglan" sleeve T-shirts. I wore them a lot when I was a kid. I still buy them occasionally.

Kaz Redclaw

LOL. <3

Colin Moriarty

I listen to these episodes expecting a decent hit of nostalgia, but I certainly didn’t expect to have the jingle for Bob’s Stores ripped violently from its hiding spot from deep within my lizard brain and thrust into the light of consciousness. I can’t get the damn song out of my head. Thanks, guys.

Forrest Hunter

Could be. =)

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed. Me too. It's a good point.

Colin Moriarty

It's a remake of our first game. =)

Colin Moriarty

I’ve loved Converse shoes my whole life. They’re the only shoes I’ve worn since I got my own job and could buy my own stuff. I’ve never been able to explain why. I watched this movie obsessively as a child. I wore the VHS out I watched it so much. I’d never realised Andy wore Converse until Colin mentioned it. Did the product placement in this movie ruin my childhood brain?

Russell Garrett

Got the blu-rays, absolutely love it.

Noah Friscopp

Did I miss something? Colin, did you mean to name drop your new game in this podcast? That's exciting!

meijin3

When Dagan mentioned how children know when the animation is subpar or just slightly off from the original. I FELT that. I’ll never forgot watching Tarzan II at my grandma and grandpas house on DVD and thinking, “the fuck is this turd??”

Corey Adams

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Life is strange.

Colin Moriarty

Also, Dagan was right on the money when he said kids can discern quality. I knew from a very young age those direct-to-video sequels didn't look quite right.

Connor Peterman

It's really funny that you mentioned Tim Allen's arrest because he was caught at the airport that is down the road from my childhood home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Bonus fact, my girlfriend (from the opposite side of Michigan) for a time lived across the lake from Tim Allen. Truly a small, small world.

Connor Peterman

Weird hearing Dagan talk about baseball tees, as I'm wearing a baseball tee

PuppiesOnParade

Same exact point....replace Toys with Buzz. It is his natural instinct by just being a toy (even if he doesn't know it)

Ryan Zimm

Interesting.

Colin Moriarty

Spoilers. =\

Colin Moriarty

We didn't say it was weird the toys didn't move; we said it was weird Buzz didn't move.

Colin Moriarty

It's weird when you really think about it, which is why I try not to think about it too hard.

Colin Moriarty

We'll get to it eventually.

Colin Moriarty

That's really awesome. I feel that way about a lot of UK content I listen to and watch, so it's nice to hear it goes both ways. <3

Colin Moriarty

That's a good point.

Colin Moriarty

Star Wars needed that vision.

Colin Moriarty

I honestly haven't been in one in maybe 15 years.

Colin Moriarty

I mean, we're well outside our window.

Colin Moriarty

PSA - There is a product called the Star Wars Despecialized edition. It removes all of the new scenes, but also uprezes every movie to HD. It is a fan made project.

Jeremy Seal

Sid has a cameo appearance in Toy Story 3 as a garbageman, reprised by the same actor. He seems well-adjusted

Aoife

Never thought of the toys not moving when humans are around as a plot hole. It is just their natural instinct. Even if Buzz doesn't know he is a toy, it is an involuntary response that toys just have. Now, Woody talking to Sid at the end could BE the plot hole. But it is more likely that since he is aware, he can bypass that natural response to freeze.

Ryan Zimm

I care about Baseball, mainly because my Braves finally won. Also, I think sports fandom is tribalism. I agree that you should cheer for the home teams, or it doesn't make sense.

Jeremy Seal

Dagan is confusing the plot of Toy Story 3, when Andy goes to college, with Toy Story 2. Also he was completely correct when he said that Woody seemed like a hand me down from Andy’s parents from the 50s. Toy Story 2, the best in the series imo, focuses on this aspect of Woody and his origin. Anyway, I would love to see you guys cover more Pixar movies in the future. Toy Story 2 and The Incredibles are a must! Great podcast as always though guys!

Kevin Austin Webb

I live on a Welsh island in North Wales, UK. But somehow when I listen to you guys reminiscing about your youth in the states. You give me this overwhelming feeling off nostalgia for a time in a country that I never experienced. It's pretty awesome. We share so many similarities in our personalities, world views, likes and dislikes. Thank you for bringing me such joy!

James Buck

Great episode, guys. My take on the ‘Buzz does/doesn’t know he’s a toy’ plot hole is this: Buzz didn’t think he was a normal human. He always realized he’s not flesh and blood. He just thought he was a spaceman on top of all that. The movie stresses the phrasing “JUST a toy” when he comes to the realization. In that moment he’s crushed that he’s NOT an astronaut, not “oh I’m not human.” Hahaha. I could be off, who knows or cares, really. Great show!

Ian (616Entertainment)

Lack of a clear and singular vision is really what killed the Star Wars trilogy. In regards to Andy’s dad etc, they drop small hints here and there but one of the reasons Woody is a cowboy is because he is supposedly Andy’s fathers toy. They go into it later on but Woody is a vintage toy and Andy’s mom refers to him as an old family toy that’s seemingly been handed down.

Kenneth Oms

I've been disappointed with hot topic recently cause they'll have graphic tees with designs I like, but most of them are printed like absolute crap.

Aubrey

I’ll forgive Dagan for thinking Trenton is still the Yankees AA affiliate. The Somerset Patriots are now the AA affiliate as of last year. Always a fun time to go (and much easier drive for me) since they seem much more “pure baseball” imo Also agree with supporting teams and geography, can’t see myself ever leaving the New York sports area.

Steve Forgione

I'm sorry to hear that. Used to be insanity. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy. =)

Colin Moriarty

Islanders v. Rangers is mostly friendly trash talk between fans now. Those are for sure still the best games to go to

Joe McPartlin

My Favorite child hood movie! Can’t wait!
