Sacred Symbols+, Episode 174: Elden Ring Spoilercast and Review Discussion

Coming off of the critically acclaimed and award-winning Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice, FromSoftware has returned with its most ambitious title to date. Elden Ring not only shocked the industry through its detailed and content-dense open world, but also their most dedicated fans. Over the past few weeks, the game has become a phenomenon, breaking out of the traditional gaming spheres and into mainstream conversation.
So in line with Last Stand tradition, I (Dustin) gathered your questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas to discuss this monumental game. For this show, I knew I needed to include some of the big guns, so I brought on Souls expert FightinCowboy and our very own MrMattyPlays to discuss the game. We hope you love it!

2022-04-02 18:16:47 +0000 UTCPS4 pro quality is acceptable, although the 30 fps hurts after playing Dark Souls remastered in 60 fps. I’ll be happy when I get my ps5 Cowboy’s guides are a must when playing any fromsoft game. I think elden ring is better than all of dark souls and demon souls, but sekiro and bloodborne offer a more unique/tighter experience IMO. But Elden Ring is definitely my game of the year at this point, even over horizon.

The best thing is the world building but overall even though I like it it’s just dark souls 3.5 in an open world with a lot of the same flaws and short comings .

Worth noting, Sony formed a strategic stock partnership with Kadokawa which specifically noted video game properties amongst media partnerships.

2022-03-23 19:22:11 +0000 UTCPlaying on PC with a 1080ti. Using flawless widescreen for ultrawide and have had zero stutter. Runs at 45-60 fps smoothly. Only issue was it crashed once during the first dragon fight. I do play in offline mode, maybe that helps idk. Guess I’m just lucky.

The majority of the characters in the game speak with a Welsh accent, nice to see my country represented. Fun fact, in The Witcher books Geralt is referred to as Gwyn Blaidd (white wolf). A lot of fantasy seems to derive names of characters from Welsh 🏴

2022-03-22 21:57:05 +0000 UTCI platinumed the game today at 85 hours and I think the most impressive thing about it is the amount of worthwhile content. This may be the most content rich open world game I've ever played. It feels like Dark Souls 4, 5 and 6 all shoved into 1 game and the "side" areas that aren't required to beat the main quest feel just as handcrafted and in depth as the main areas and have some of the best and most challenging bosses. It feels like the side areas alone are just as big as an entire Souls game. The game has some issues but overall it was worth the hype which is so rare nowadays and will go down as an influential classic. Also when it comes to the technical aspects on PS5 the frame rate wasn't perfect but I got used to it quick and I didn't experience any bugs but the pop in was the most distracting thing imo.

One piece of pottery won't tell you much but eventually if you find enough of the pieces they start to fit together to tell part of the story. The gaps are left for you to interpret. Video games are the only medium capable of that style of storytelling.

2022-03-22 17:33:46 +0000 UTCI loved Elden ring. I Platinum it two times on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. However I will not buy the next game. This fan base the fan base up from soft. They're too toxic I don't support them I don't support who they are and what they represent. And I will never buy another one of their games. I'll release date because of that and just the buggy nature of their games in general. Also don't believe this game is a 9 out of 10 it's only a 7 out of 10. And you can't convince me otherwise. The story is incoherent. There is actually no story I don't believe this is actually how you tell story. And I don't care if you say it's how they tell stories in Japan. I think that's a lie and I think that's just lazy people being trolls on the internet. I don't like how people on the internet attack individuals who say that the story is bad and that the game looks like crap. I actually ended up liking the PlayStation 4 version of the game because it doesn't have grass flickering in and out. And there's less popping. It runs smoother. My first playthrough was on PlayStation 5 and I wasn't impressed my feelings is this game should have come out 5 years ago. And I would have been more impressed. I'm tired of people saying that's a beautiful looking game. The art direction is cool but it's not a beautiful game you need to go get your head checked. It's nice to hear that people actually have some decent criticisms of it I got tired of hearing the brown nosing individuals on the internet defending the game and apologizing for it. But that just proves how toxic the fromsoftware fanbase is and honestly I will not buy another game from them again unless it's on sale for like $20.

2022-03-22 17:26:28 +0000 UTCI don’t know if it’s been pointed out, but dragons respawn at their location if you take them too far away, so you can’t take advantage of the AI, or so they don’t go to an area in the map they shouldn’t be in. It’s not a bug. Also the shield lasers, Insta kill death builds, and a lot of the things holding back pvp included the consoles and have been patched as of 1.03. It’s interesting how inconsistent peoples technical experiences have been.
