Sacred Symbols, Episode 195: Expanding the Map

In recent years, Sony's first party family has grown mightily, with sensical additions like Housemarque, Insomniac, Bluepoint, and others filling obvious roles. That's why the outright purchase of fledgling, game-less second party partner Haven is a little confusing. Yet, through the lens of the modern industry -- which is crunched by worker shortages, high budgets, and even higher expectations -- perhaps this acquisition can be justified from personnel, creative, and even geographic perspectives. Either way, let's welcome Haven to the family with a candid discussion about what Sony's turn in strategy may mean. Plus: Gran Turismo 7 is a complete mess, The Witcher IV has been officially acknowledged, Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game has been delayed, NFL football is coming to PSVR, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do we believe in the 'metaverse'? Are we tired of crafting systems? Does Hogwarts Legacy have any chance of being treated fairly by the media? What happens to Sacred Symbols when Colin dies? All of this (and more!) on the other side of play.

I’m not sure why, but the situation with Haven takes me back to Ready At Dawn. I don’t remember how they were acquired but the interest in The Order was a no brainer based off of the initial premise and visuals. I actually enjoyed the game but that is little consolation at this point. Buyer beware on a large scale.

Greg Hommel

I'm glad to hear it. =)

Holy crap, the first 25 minutes of this show had me stomach laughing. I probably looked like an idiot walking my dog around my apartment complex. 🤣 This is what I come for. Rock on nerds. 🤘 😅 #NukeTheElves

Jeremy Menear

It seems like there's something to that, perhaps, yes.

Colin Moriarty

Could haven be developing a metaverse/playstation home like game? It kind of sounds like it the way they describe it

Cornelius

Would they? Never. The question was could. I think they could. As far as I’m concerned they rode the horse as far as they could with ODST/Reach. Those games stand the test of time. I don’t think ND with a fighting game in the 90s is an analog. They could certainly make another great Uncharted game though. Hell, they’ve got a better shot than 343.

Kickstand

No, I don't think Bungie is built for that anymore. Absolutely not. Why would they do that, and how would it sustain their production cost and headcount? Naughty Dog once made a fighting game. Think they're still up for it? LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Could be.

Colin Moriarty

I've already moved on. Other stuff to play.

Colin Moriarty

Glad you liked it. =)

Colin Moriarty

None will be forthcoming.

Colin Moriarty

While I agree with you all about third-party controllers, this one was the exception to rule: https://retrogamesuperhyper.com/2019/09/13/joystickery-part-3/amp/ (Specifically speaking of the Capcom Fighting Stick)

Kid-Organic

“ Stay in your lane” then uses the creators of Halo as an example? Colin I need some clarification!

I’m just going to say for Colin’s own sanity’s sake that I would advise playing with other people as much as needed. Whether it’s summoning random players at the sites of Grace, summoning pools, or in front of a boss door or summoning friends you know who are willing to help you with bosses and getting your bearings exploring areas of the vast map, co-op is something that can be used to a massive advantage. Even just having one other summon to take turns distracting a boss/ enemy and make openings for the other player to make a move is a game changer. The game even offers a password system for co-op summoning allowing only you and those you are coordinating co-op with to see each other’s summoning signs. Co-op also interferes with Trophies in no way to my knowledge. Not only is this going to help newer, less experienced players find their footing, it is genuinely FUN to just party chat with a couple friends and explore the world together. I think it could completely change your experience for the better. This is the way I learned how to really understand and play these games with Dark Souls 1 and can now hold my own. These games really are more manageable than they’ve ever been made out to be. There is a bevy of options at your disposal from tinkering and researching builds that can completely break the game to playing with others. Or the new additions like the ashes of war, torrent, and so on. Stand tall and don’t give up, Colin! I think when you learn just how flexible the game is and open to different kinds of experiences (including the advantage of co-op), you could really come to appreciate it more than the “this is a deep, interesting world” conclusion that you’ve arrived at so far, very early in the game.

Stray_Bullets

Just a small inside information, I'm from Ukraine and Ubisoft have 2 studios here Kyiv and Odessa. They are quite big, at least the one in Kyiv. So that's might be the reason for the delay.

Anastas Lyakh

You would be surprised if Bungie could make a compelling/coherent single player shooter? I think they did 5 times? I understand now they don’t but that’s because they stood on top of the mountain for a decade before deciding to evolve. Sorry if I am missing something.

Kickstand

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Likewise.

Colin Moriarty

No matter what we do, we get criticized, so.

Colin Moriarty

Long live Colin.

I don’t expect you guys to make any changes based on just my opinion, but I wanted to let you know I feel like the “What We’ve been playing” section has been getting too spoilery and in depth, to the point I’m going to be skipping it from now on. A few weeks ago you made a comment about Horizon’s future that made it extremely easy to guess a twist in the story. What would have been an “oh shit!!!!” moment for me ended up just being an “ah, yep” because I had already assumed it would happen. Then in this episode chris talking about things that were nice surprises for him in Elden Ring and I’m like damn I would have liked to have had that been a surprise for me too. Like I said I don’t expect you guys to make any changes to how you do your show, I just wanted to let you know that I preferred the more broad general opinions of the stuff you’re playing. Love you guys ❤️

Josh Lucas

As far as the negativity around Horizon, I’m a decent amount into the game and I’ve found it to be a very buggy experience. I’ve sent Guerrilla a handful of clips of characters falling through the map, going through walls, and components falling off machines and going through the ground so I can’t get them. It’s interesting how different of experiences we had.
