Sacred Symbols+, Episode 175: Dustin Mailbag

To complete the trifecta of recent Sacred Symbols+ mailbags, I (Dustin) hopped in to record! Don't worry though, as I tried to keep the questions not completely weeby (but I did sneak in a few). Are there any mediocre games I love? What multiplayer games had me hooked? What are the issues PlayStation 5 needs to improve on? Will Elden Ring impact the future of FromSoftware games? Let's discuss!

I personally find Mortal Kombat 11 to be quite approachable. It has a fairly robust training mode to get you introduced to the mechanics. Ranges from beginner to expert at your own pace. I play Mortal Kombat for the story, so I'm by no means a fighting game expert but tend to play pretty well considering that.

If you’re traveling to Pittsburgh, go to the Strip District! Amazing little shops and food!

Hey Dustin- if you're looking to get into fighting games, I'd honestly recommend Tekken as a good entry point. It's complex enough to have a lot of depth and replayability to it, but it's not quite as frenetically fast-paced as Arcsys games like Guilty Gear/Persona 4 Arena/etc (those games are just straight-up too fast for me—I don't have super-great reflexes, so Tekken is about on par with my speed). I think it's also much more accessible to people who aren't that familiar with fighting games—I play competitively online pretty often, but I also like to invite my buddies over to my place to have a few beers and play some local versus mode, and they always have a great time. Also, regarding Kingdom Hearts delving into new Disney worlds: are you familiar with the 1985 Disney flick The Black Cauldron? It's not a particularly great movie, but it has some really cool dark fantasy atmosphere/character designs—almost along the lines of, dare I say it, our beloved FromSoft games. Maybe Kingdom Hearts 4 will take a page from Dark Souls...? I doubt it, though—Tetsuya Nomura is more inspired by Hot Topic than dark fantasy for his aesthetic. Also also: I hear you on those late game Elden Ring bosses. Without getting too spoilery, I agree that it's important for them to balance things out—but that applies to bosses as well as players, particularly the late-game bosses. If you're talking about the optional boss that I think you are, they have that *one* move that's basically guaranteed to be a one-shot kill, no matter who you are, no matter how much vigor you have, unless RNG dicates they don't do it that often. That desperately needs to be updated. The Souls games have always followed the model of "hard, but fair," but the final few bosses of Elden Ring throw that completely out the window, and I think the complaints people have about that are legitimate.

That Thrice call out! So good!

Love a good Last Stand mailbag, and I was stoked to see it was Dustin! It was fun to get some clarification on your weeb-ery and hear about your music preferences. Being a Weezer fan is certainly a mixed bag, I’ll agree with that. Definitely keep ‘em coming!

Combos are not what you want to be thinking about if you're trying to get good at fighting games. Far more important to just understand what each button does for your character, how long the animation takes, how far the attack reaches, etc. Also, blocking. You should pretty much always be blocking if you aren't moving or attacking. Fight sticks won't make you better but they can make it more enjoyable to learn if you enjoy hitting those big buttons as much as I do.

Will he mention how long it took him to platinum Elden Ring?…

In terms of fighting games, you just have to find someone who is willing to show you the basics or fundamentals of that particular game. Understanding movement and spacing is a lot more important than combos right off the bat. It doesn't really matter if you play on a stick or pad.
