Sacred Symbols+, Episode 178: Backwards Compatibility and PlayStation 5 Pro and PSVR2, Oh-My!

It's been a while (perhaps too long) since we've had tech YouTuber and podcaster Tom on the show. You may know him from his YouTube channel Moore's Law Is Dead and his podcast Broken Silicon, or you may have seen or heard him on a previous episode of +. As usual, I (Colin) pick his brain about all things PlayStation tech. We split our chat into three silos: First, a deep-dive into PlayStation Plus' upcoming revision, with an eye towards apparent difficulties surrounding PS3 and Vita emulation; then we revisit PSVR2, which many are talking about post-GDC in the most glowing of terms; and finally, we end on PlayStation 5 itself and its future possibilities, both in the form of a redesigned "slim" console and a buffed-out "Pro" iteration. One thing is for certain: Exciting (and interesting) times are ahead.

Great episode and I really think Tom has a great idea for the upgrade in just unlocking it more storage and better memory. Great idea and keeps the price right during these inflation filled times. Also happy to hear Tom is more closely joining Sacred Symbols!

They've yet to show it so far. GT7 looks good yeah, buggy as hell and took me all of 12.5 hours of race time to finish the single player 'campaign'. What have they done with the ps5 power so far to move gaming forward? So far load times are the main improvement.

Greg Dawson

If we listened to anything said on the subreddit, we'd be out of business.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not sure that they had no chance. Sony made a cross-gen decision for this gen only, and remember that they publicly said otherwise.

Colin Moriarty

Awesome.

Colin Moriarty

Fair enough.

Colin Moriarty

One thing I notice doesn't work on my downstairs PS5 only is YouTube. Often having to restart my console.

Colin Moriarty

They can do a lot with more power!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. He'll be on as much as we need his insights!

Colin Moriarty

Will that change the game in any way? Most people won't even notice the difference. 1080p 60 is fine.

Greg Dawson

I love Tom. It seems most people here share my sentiment. But if you go on the Sub Reddit, it is the complete opposite. So odd to me

Ryan Zimm

Horizon Forbidden West at 60fps and 4k for one thing....

Ryan Zimm

Everyone needs to remember what a short time ago it was that Sony locked down the final specs of the PS5. Developers have been aiming for a performance benchmark for plenty of time but the unique combination of the SSD, Kraken, Tempest and Dual Sense was finalized much later. Horizon, God of War and Gran Turismo had no chance of being PS5 exclusives. I would think even the next couple Sony titles were probably pretty far along before they nailed down the PS5. We will see but pay attention to the obvious. Set your expectations in reality.

Greg Hommel

This is why I just bought a brand new 60gb ps3 fat.

Taylor kazemba

There's a 100% chance that a PS5 Pro will be the first one that I'll get, and I'm damned well looking forward to it. There'll actually be games to play, too.

Max Stahl

The issues with the games are probably software related - I had an issue with some games not firing up at all, cause I was downloading them in rest mode, and a software update popped up, and installed, at the same time. Couldn't start some of them, and couldn't get past the main menu in others - preinstalled games like Astro, or stuff that I downloaded later worked fine. I tried booting it into safe mode, rebuilding the database, even installing official software from a pendrive - all the steps listed on Sony's site, but nothing helped. In the end that PS5 got replaced, and I'm on my 3rd machine atm (my launch PS5 just stopped turning on after a few months).

MISZCZOGRZMOT

Ps5 pro rumors already? What do they need more power for? Considering the thought they don't make much on selling the consoles, they sure do like making them.

Greg Dawson

Glad to hear Tom is going to be a bigger part of SS+. I love his Insights into console hardware and games everytime he is here but not so much the PC focus of MLID, so I am very happy that he will be talking more with you. I am a selfish man and would like a Tom show every month, but I doubt that is in the plans. Do you have a rough idea of how often he will be on? Surely this must have been something you two have discussed.

illicit salt trade

Thank you! He'll be back.

Colin Moriarty

I will leave that to Matty. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Seems they will. =)

Colin Moriarty

They gotta make it happen. Would be a shame for those games to never migrate.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! Glad you think so.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I'm trying. Thanks!

Colin Moriarty

The argument can go in the other direction, though. If few people will use it, what's the point?

Colin Moriarty

Thanks!

Colin Moriarty

I doubt he cares about that!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Most people will never go back, which is why it's kind of a fruitless argument.

Colin Moriarty

Hopefully they roll it all out sooner rather than later.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Tom is elite status, love this convo pls get him back on show ASAP!!

Matthew Kincaid

Nvm, could have just been a joke since both are taking a while. May have misheard that when listening.

Michael Limauro

Congrats to Tom joining as a tech analyst contributor. He's awesome and incredibly informative, can't wait to see him come around more. Defining duke ultimate for the Xbox side soon please 🙏

Kendrick Luckenbach

Man such a great addition as a tech analyst! Awesome episode guys!

Edson

God I hope that they make a pro version of the PS5. I like those Refreshers I enjoyed the refreshed Xbox did, And the refresh PlayStation did I really hope that they continue to do that.

SammyJay

Thank goodness the bloodborne remaster seems somewhat close. Thanks for the scoop Tom/Colin.

Michael Limauro

Great episode. The PS3 back compat makes a lot of sense to me. Like you said Colin, imagine InFamous, Resistance MGS4 and others come back remastered 60fps? That would be so dope. I was one of the fans that stayed. I remember people making fun of me for liking PS3. WHOS LAUGHING NOW! 😆 also, calling it now, PlayStation Home is making a comeback in both TV and VR.

Jeff Caseres

I’ve been listening to Moore’s Law since you guested on the show. Tom is another great addition to the team.

Jenna

Tom is a beast and a great addition to the growing LSM team. Another stellar episode

Keith Mc Carthy

Great episode! Glad to see Tom back on, ever since Cerny’s power hour traumatized Jim Ryan into a vow of silence, he’s been the go to for getting look under the hood of PS5. I'm not usually technically inclined, but I think more people need to be aware of the next gens capabilities so they know to expect more, otherwise we're gonna have cross generational stifling for years to come. We appreciate you making time for the technical side Colin, even if it's not your forte!

Tick Dickler

I just don’t see why they can’t enable BC while also having a subscription service with hundreds of games. I’m sure the number of people who still have copies of PS1, PS2 and PSP and are only interested in playing those games specifically is very small. Not a noticeable hit to their bottom line.

Jason K

I Platinumed Demon's Souls three times - not a typo, I have the PS5 version and both the US and Hong Kong versions of the original game. Also Platinumed Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne, and mastered DS2 and DS3 on PC. You could say I am a fan of these games...

Moore's Law Is Dead

Really good and thought provoking discussion. Super happy to hear from Tom on SS+ more too!

Noah Trujillo

Great episode! Two things i've learned about Tom, he's very smart and fucking loves Elden Ring XD

Carlos Moreno

He seems to have dodged the Gamepass/PS Plus question. You can tell he’s happy to be part of Last Stand and didn’t want to pissed off anybody 😂. Good listen 🎧

Edwin Garcia

This was a really great episode. I really enjoy the expertise that Tom brings to the conversation especially about how games render. There’s something about figuring out how games work on that level that I find highly enjoyable now that I’m older.

Kenneth Oms

Trophy support for PS1, PS2, & PS3 games would be nice, but I usually never go back and play those older games. It would be interesting to see how the backwards compatibility plays out in general but If we are being honest I am more excited what games they have coming out now and not what they released 5 years ago or what games they will release 5 years from now. I like these episodes with Tom, very informative and interesting since he has such a good pulse on things to come.

Mitchell Lundsberg

It’s nice knowing they are actually doing something about the PS3 bc. It’s a major sticking point for me as a Xbox owner, so glad to know this will happen eventually.

RK128

Seeing Tom back on the show is great, loved the insights last time around. This month is off to a fantastic start! Best wishes all ✌️
