KnockBack, Episode 223: Game of Thrones (Season 5)

The fifth season of Game of Thrones, which first aired on HBO in 2015, represents somewhat of a plateau for the critically-acclaimed show. While the first four seasons presented a steady progression in quality, intrigue, and execution, season five seems outright rushed, with too much content in too little time. It's still awesome for what it is, though, and that's perhaps where our biggest criticism becomes a blatant compliment: Because we want more, and we want it slower and more methodically, not quickly and haphazardly. Thus, George RR Martin's famous televised series descends into what becomes an increasingly controversial second half, one that's largely winged without source material, though we're not quite to that point yet. As we do in each episode, let's travel this fictional world and try to make sense of its many characters, locales, and arcs, and have some fun and enjoy some insight along the way.

I’m loving these season by season pods, reminds me just how much I loved most of the show. Interesting that you guys dismissed Joffreys “incest brain” though, it’s the definitely the reason. Its not guaranteed to happen but much more likely - It’s the major issue with the Targaryens constant incest too, ie the Mad King.

Dan Parsons

Yup. Very rushed.

Colin Moriarty

Doubtful. Eight episodes is enough. =)

Watch boys, from here on out the shows starts to feel rushed and none sensical where every problem characters face is solved with a sword fight or battle. The shows loses all nuance, clever writing and political intrigue the story was known for. The good plots sprinkled here and there are still straight from the books. The showrunners are great directors in my opinion, amazing at adapting a good script but they are not good writers.

I’m sure someone has asked already but do you think it would be possible to do a knockback for the books when you guys eventually get to them? They might be a bit too much while making other LSM content but I’d definitely be interested in hearing what you guys think of the differences and the missed potential of the show.

Greg Wallace

Like I said: It plateaus.

This season gets a bad wrap. It’s no where near as well made as seasons 1-4, but there are many great moments and character archs sprinkled throughout. I think it’s great television. This is where the creators started to simplify and not adapt the books as faithfully, which is a shame, but I think the good outweighs the bad. Can’t wait to dive in to the podcast and hear the dynamic duo’s opinions.

Robbie Agnew

He'll be glad to hear that.

We're recording S6 shortly. =)

Thank you. <3

I love when D mentions anything skateboarding related.

Been rewatching the series alongside you guys and hearing your discussions on each season only enhance the series in my opinion. I however couldn’t stop myself from watching ahead and finishing season 6 already. 😂

Knockback's coverage of GoT has made me go back and start re-watching the show. It's so so so so good. (Both Knockback and GoT)
