KnockBack, Episode 224: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park album)

No, we've not Forgotten: Our audience voted for us to record an episode of KnockBack all about Linkin Park's seminal 2000 album Hybrid Theory, and needless to say, we're pleased to provide a Cure For the Itch. At a brisk 37 minutes and change, Hybrid Theory doesn't Runaway with fluff and filler. Instead, it stays With You, bringing you One Step Closer to the record's next great moment, one that always seems to be just around the corner. In the End, many consider Linkin Park's major label debut to be one of the most iconic raprock and nu-metal albums ever, a timely offering for a music industry Crawling towards a new era of downloads, YouTube videos, and single-obsessessions. In fact, Hybrid Theory is one of the final diamond-certified albums ever, a sign of the times. So let us talk about an album that brings raw energy and High Voltage to yearning, confused, and angst-ridden teens to this day.

(While we always 'stretch our legs' with opening, non-topic-related conversation, we want to warn you that our introductory conversation today veers into contemporary politics and expresses opinions you may disagree with. Should you like to skip to the content itself, fast-forward 20-25 minutes from the beginning.)

KnockBack, Episode 224: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park album)

Col, I feel like you said “311” more than you said “Linkin Park”. 😄 My fave rap/rock group is Chronic Future. They have 3 vocalists. Listen to the album “Lines In My Face”, it’s a classic.

Its unfortunate that politics has gotten so out of hand and inherently toxic that you can't really discuss anything without pissing off some or becoming inflammatory towards others due to how many issues we're facing today are reaching the core pillars of our shared human experience. Even on a day to day basis its really disappointing seeing how things are developing every day due to the many issues we're grappling with. All I have to say is that ultimately I think everybody regardless of belief, creed or affiliation has just put up with too much over the past decade or so and everybody could use a break. I agree with you Colin that compassion should come above all else and I respect that you hold that as a key principle of yours even if we disagree on a couple things here and there which is perfectly fine. :D

DoubleDave

Thank you! <3

Colin Moriarty

We're always gonna speak our minds; you're in or you're out. That's up to you.

Colin Moriarty

Been hoping for a long time that you guys would get around to talking about this absolute gem of an album! a great discussion. I'm glad we agree Papercut is the best song on the album Colin, the Reanimation version also slaps! P.S. that episode description is simply superb haha!

Jack

Politics every episode lately idk man. I don't understand the political rant at the start. How are liberals coming after video games? I just watched a bunch of conservatives blame gun school shooting murders on video game violence for the hundredth time fucking sick losers at an NRA conference days after babies had to be identified by DNA. Good guys with guns I'll hold my breath for the rant on that right after the abortion stuff all last month and the trans and far left stuff lately. Appreciate the show usually and all you do but crazy skipping my favorite pod about my favorite album too much shit this week.

Klutch

Yes, indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! Corey Taylor would be another good pull for a guy pulling double frontman duty

Kenneth Koepnick

Glad you're digging those records. They're great!

Colin Moriarty

I'm a little late to commenting, but thank you so much for doing this episode. Knockback is special. I'm a 21yo Zoomer with total interest in all shades of music, and I left Linkin Park to be explored until just last year. My God those first two albums are so killer. Thanks guys 🙏 - these album episodes are dope so hopefully we can see Meteora or Blood Sugar Sex Magik someday.

Avery Illies

2000 was a time!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, reminds me that the first time I ever heard Linkin Park was at my school's "Greek Week" talent show right after the album came out, one of the fraternities dressed up like the monks from the One Step Closer video and did all kinds of crazy flips on stage choreographed to the song, completely blew my mind, and I've been listening to this album ever since.

Bryan Finck

I'd like to get further into their discography one day. Honestly, it's hard listening to unfamiliar music these days; a product of getting old.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

All of the songs are on my playlist from the first two records.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. <3

Colin Moriarty

I like Meteora less overall, but still a very nostalgic album for me. I remember pre-ordering it and getting a t-shirt.

Colin Moriarty

Totally. Maybe we'll get to the self-titled record one day.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! I like to forewarn people now, just in case.

Colin Moriarty

Copeland rules. Love him.

Colin Moriarty

I like Rush, but I wouldn't call myself a fan, no.

Colin Moriarty

If you guys thought Joe Hahn did a good job on Hybrid Theory you should listen to their album A Thousand Suns, it’s really experimental and he shines on there.

Mike W

This was a fantastic episode. I’m always impressed with the way you can deconstruct and explain the intricacies of music, Colin. I grew up a drummer, I can still play a little bit, but I don’t have that ability that you do, to go through pull it all apart, piece by piece. Good shit.

Ian (616Entertainment)

Still listening to the album weekly and there 2nd one also.

rubber nipples 209

Loved what you had to say in the beginning of the conversation, Colin. I always love it when you talk about politics!

Will Hahn

Growing up in the 2000s Linkin Park was everywhere. This Album and Meteora still slap till this day.

Jambi

Also cook a lot to this album

Drew Lee

I bought this album for a friend for his birthday and ended up opening it and listening to the CD like 30 times before I handed him a unwrapped jewel case….Great episode! It’s still one of my go to work out/yard work albums. Points of Authority really does just hit hard.

Drew Lee

Great episodes boys. I can’t help but feel like the political discussion at the beginning would have been a great preface to a Rage Against the Machine album review

Kenneth Oms

I live for the political rants, Colin. I don’t agree on everything but it’s great to see some honesty these days

Michael

As a huge fan of The Police, I too wonder who the fuck Stewart Copeland thinks he is. Love the music talk, as I think it invokes more nostalgia than any other subject. Chester lifted up so many others with his music but couldn't escape his own demons. The definition of tragic.

macdaddyx4

Are either of you Rush fans? I'd love to hear a conversation about something like Moving Pictures or Hemispheres. Some of the best of the best

Michael (ObjoGaming)

Unauthorized is tragically underrated. When they got back together to play it in 2008-ish, it was so cool. I'd go for the self-titled after that, though I love all three of those classic records.

Colin Moriarty

It's so good. Really big fan of that track.

Colin Moriarty

That was good, too.

Colin Moriarty

Hahaha. It was everywhere!

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

I wish I got to see them, particularly in that 2000-2004 era.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

We're happy to cover it.

Colin Moriarty

appreciate the ben folds five mention! whatever and ever and unauthorized autobiography are top tier

Jacob

I’ve had the most stressful day. Dagan on this one when I have a beer is mellowing me out

Bob Spiers

Glad you brought up the Reanimation version of Pushing Me Away. That's very high on my list of favorite Linkin Park songs. Honestly all of Reanimation is worth a listen for any fan of Hybrid Theory

Joe McPartlin

How bout that album with jay-z

Bob Spiers

I think the first time I heard "In The End" was in a video of someone beating Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts in like the earliest of early days of YouTube.

Erin Eden

Based.

Max Stahl

I was 16 when this came out. I remember listening to this on my CD player when I went to bed for days on end. Got to see Linkin Park live once fortunately. RIP, Chester.

Jose Cantu

While I'm normally Numb to Knockback, today I think I'll be Breaking The Habit and giving you guys a listen.

Dave Ramos

Incredible description

CoupledHippo

Love this album, me and my friend who past away a few years ago first bonded over this band in elementary school, so glad you’re doing a knock back on this.
